The best tech gift for a movie lover is one that solves a real gap in their setup: a projector for a room that can support a big image, better audio for a TV that sounds thin, or a disc player for someone building a physical collection. Before choosing, consider the recipient’s room, existing devices, and whether they stream, collect discs, or both.
1. A home theater projector for a bigger picture
A projector can make movie night feel more cinematic, but it is not automatically an upgrade over a TV. The room’s ambient light, available throw distance, and screen or projection surface all affect whether the image will work well. Ask where the recipient would use it and whether they can control the light before buying.
Portable projectors suit people who value flexibility; 4K laser models are aimed at a more dedicated home-cinema setup. As one example, Centre Hi Fi describes the Hisense C2 Ultra TriChroma as a 4K laser projector with a 65-to-300-inch image range, 3,000-lumen brightness, Dolby Vision and IMAX Enhanced support, and a flexible gimbal. Those are source-reported specifications, not independent test results. Check the current model’s specifications and the room dimensions before treating them as a fit.

2. A soundbar for simpler TV audio
A soundbar is a relatively straightforward way to improve a TV’s audio without placing speakers around the room. Compare its dimensions with the TV stand or wall space, check the available connections, and consider whether clearer dialogue or a more immersive effect matters most. A subwoofer may be included, but its placement and footprint still matter.
Centre Hi Fi describes the Samsung HW-Q600F (2025) as a 3.1.2-channel Dolby Atmos soundbar with dedicated height channels and a wireless subwoofer. Treat that as a model example, not a universal recommendation: confirm compatibility with the recipient’s TV and check current availability. Sonos’s gift page lists Arc, Beam (Gen 2), and Ray; it describes Beam for TVs up to 65 inches and Ray for smaller rooms and TVs. 3. A surround-sound package for a dedicated room
For someone with space and enthusiasm for a more involved setup, a packaged surround system—or a receiver and separate speakers—can provide a fuller room-based audio experience than a single soundbar. The trade-off is more equipment to place, connect, and configure.

- Consider cable routes and whether the recipient is comfortable setting up and calibrating components.
- Match the system’s connections and supported audio formats to the TV, player, or receiver it will use.

4. A 4K UHD Blu-ray player for a disc collector
A 4K Blu-ray player is a strong fit for someone who owns—or wants to build—a physical movie library. It can also play regular Blu-rays and DVDs, according to What Hi-Fi?, but the display and audio equipment determine which of a disc’s features the viewer can use. A 4K TV or projector is needed to benefit from 4K discs; compatible audio equipment is required for immersive audio tracks. Some players may not support less common audio-disc formats.

5. A streaming device for a TV that needs one
A streaming device can be a practical gift if the recipient’s TV lacks the apps or interface they want, or if the built-in experience is difficult to use. First check the TV’s available inputs, internet access, and which streaming services the recipient uses. If the television already handles their viewing comfortably, a separate streamer may add little.
6. A universal remote to simplify device control
A universal remote can reduce the number of controllers needed for a TV, sound system, and other compatible devices. Centre Hi Fi describes the One For All URC 7880 as controlling up to eight devices. That capacity alone does not guarantee compatibility: make a list of the recipient’s exact equipment models and verify support before purchasing.

If the recipient already owns a projector, a screen can improve convenience by providing a dedicated, consistent surface. Choose only after checking the available wall or stand space, the projector’s image size and placement, and whether the person needs a fixed or portable screen. For someone without a projector, a screen by itself is unlikely to be a useful first gift.

8. An HDMI cable for a specific connection gap
A cable is useful when the recipient needs a connection they do not already have—for example, to link a player or streaming device to a display. Check the devices’ ports and the cable length required by the actual layout. Avoid buying one just because it sounds like a home-theater essential; the right cable depends on the equipment and connection.
9. Lighting or blackout accessories for movie night
Lighting can help create a more comfortable viewing environment, while blackout accessories can address ambient light that interferes with projection. This is especially relevant when a projector is under consideration, since room lighting affects suitability. Check whether the recipient needs to darken the room, add adjustable lighting, or neither; do not assume a lighting accessory will fix an unsuitable projector placement or throw distance.
10. A small setup accessory chosen after checking the room
When a larger purchase feels risky, choose a modest accessory that addresses a confirmed need in the recipient’s setup: a cable, screen, or room-lighting item. The right choice depends on what they already own and how their viewing space is arranged. Centre Hi Fi and Best Buy both include accessories such as these among home-theater gift options; their guides are useful starting points, but the recipient’s actual equipment should decide the purchase.
How to choose the right gift
- Find the gap. Ask whether the recipient wants a larger image, clearer or more immersive sound, disc playback, easier streaming, or simpler device control.
- Check the room. For projection, consider light, throw distance, and screen space. For audio, consider speaker placement, room size, and tolerance for setup.
- Check compatibility. Match a player, soundbar, remote, or streamer to the devices and connections already in use.
- Choose for their habits. A 4K disc player serves a collector; a streaming device is more relevant when the TV needs one; a surround package fits someone willing to configure a dedicated system.
- Verify current details. Product specifications and availability can change. Confirm the exact model, features, and regional version with the retailer or manufacturer before ordering.
