WordPress can be a strong choice for a small-business website when you want control over the software and room to adapt the site. The trade-off is responsibility: with the self-hosted WordPress.org software, you arrange hosting and account for updates, security, compatibility, and ongoing costs. WordPress.com is a separate hosted service, and what it handles or allows depends on the plan.
Here are 10 practical reasons to consider WordPress—and the limits to weigh before choosing it.
10 reasons a small business might choose WordPress
1. The core software has no license fee
The WordPress.org software is open source and licensed under GPLv2 or later. You can use it without paying a license fee, but that does not make a complete business website cost-free: domain registration, hosting, paid themes or plugins, professional help, and your own time can all add costs. The WordPress.org About page describes the project and its license.
2. You have meaningful freedom to adapt the software
The GPL grants freedoms to run, study, modify, and redistribute the software. That can matter if your business has specific requirements or wants to change providers without being limited to a proprietary site-building system. These freedoms are about the software; they do not guarantee that every hosting setup or third-party extension is portable without work.
3. Business websites are a recognized use case
WordPress supports business websites as well as other kinds of sites. Its broad adoption suggests a mature platform, but it is not evidence that WordPress is used by a particular share of small businesses or that it will suit every business. WordPress.org reports that it powers over 43% of sites across the web, while WordPress.com states that it powers over 40% of the internet; neither page specifies the measurement year for its figure. These are platform-wide claims, not small-business adoption statistics.
4. Themes give you options for changing the site’s design
Themes let you change a site’s appearance without building every visual element from scratch. You can choose a design that fits your business and adjust it as your needs change. The amount of control and the effort required depend on the theme and the changes you want to make.

5. Plugins can add functions as needs arise
Plugins extend a WordPress site with capabilities such as forms and other business functions. That makes it possible to start with a simpler site and add features later rather than treating every need as a custom development project. Check an extension’s quality, compatibility, maintenance, and price before relying on it; installing more plugins is not automatically better.
6. SEO tools are available, without a ranking guarantee
WordPress can be extended with SEO-related plugins. These may help with tasks such as managing on-page settings, but having an SEO plugin does not ensure better rankings or traffic. Search performance depends on many factors beyond the platform.

7. You can add functionality over time
A business can begin with core pages and later add features as its requirements become clearer. WordPress’s themes and plugins support that flexibility, though the cost and technical effort of expansion depend on the specific functionality, extensions, and implementation. The available platform descriptions do not quantify how much a typical small-business site can scale or what that will cost.
8. Ecommerce is possible
WordPress can be used for an online store, but that possibility should not be confused with a turnkey or effortless ecommerce operation. Before committing, identify how you will handle the store’s required features and ongoing work, then check the current capabilities, costs, and maintenance needs of the setup you plan to use.

9. The project aims to be usable without deep technical experience
WordPress.org describes WordPress as usable out of the box by people with limited technical experience and says the project emphasizes accessibility, performance, security, and ease of use. That is the project’s stated aim, not a promise that every owner will find setup or day-to-day management easy. Your comfort will depend on the site’s complexity and the hosting and tools you choose.

With self-hosted WordPress.org software, you select and manage hosting or hire a provider to do so. WordPress.com is a hosted service that can reduce the amount of hosting infrastructure you operate yourself; available features and responsibilities depend on its plan. Managed hosting can shift some operational work to a provider, but compare what it actually manages rather than assuming every update or maintenance task is included.

What WordPress still asks of a business owner
WordPress offers flexibility, not automatic upkeep. For a self-hosted site, the business needs a plan for its hosting environment, updates, extension compatibility, security, and support. The official WordPress.org requirements page warns that legacy PHP and MySQL versions are end of life and may expose a site to security vulnerabilities. Confirm that the hosting environment meets current requirements and keep it maintained.
There is also no established typical cost, setup time, traffic performance, conversion improvement, or security outcome for a small-business WordPress site. Those depend on the particular site and how it is operated. The WordPress community and contributor ecosystem can be valuable, but it is not a service-level guarantee that someone will resolve a business’s issue on a particular schedule.
WordPress.org or WordPress.com?
WordPress.org refers to the open-source software you can install on hosting you choose. WordPress.com is a hosted service built around WordPress. Do not assume that their setup, maintenance responsibilities, or ability to add or modify themes and plugins are identical: WordPress.com features depend on the plan.

Quick Recap
A practical decision checklist
- Consider WordPress if control and the ability to adapt the site are important, and you can manage the ongoing work or pay a provider to handle some of it.
- Look closely at hosted options if you want less infrastructure to operate yourself. Check the chosen service’s plan limits and responsibilities.
- Plan before choosing extensions by listing the features your business actually needs, then checking their compatibility, ongoing maintenance, and costs.
- For a store, validate the whole setup—not just whether WordPress can support ecommerce. Confirm the features, costs, and operational tasks for the implementation you intend to use.
- Budget for ownership, not just software: include hosting, domain, paid tools, support, development if needed, and time for maintenance.
