Online traceroute tools show the route from a probe or server operated by the service—not automatically the route from your own computer, office, or affected server. Choose a tool with probes close to the network you need to investigate, and compare results from more than one origin when the problem seems location-specific. Of the options below, RIPE Atlas is the strongest choice for distributed measurements and route comparisons; traceroute.dev and mtr.si are convenient for quick multi-location checks.

Which online traceroute tool should you use?

Start with the troubleshooting question. For a route observed from many networks, use RIPE Atlas measurements. To compare paths over time, use Atlas Path Analysis; to explore paths visually, use Khipu. For a quick check from several listed locations, try traceroute.dev or mtr.si. If you need a trace from a particular provider or region, look for a public looking glass operated there and confirm its supported commands.

These choices are not ten equivalent, independent probe networks. Some entries below are RIPE Atlas functions that use Atlas measurement data, and one is a category of provider-operated tools rather than a single verified website. Treat the list as ten useful options and routes to a vantage point—not a claim that ten separate global networks have been independently verified.

10 online traceroute options

1. RIPE Atlas measurements

RIPE Atlas lets users run traceroute and other measurement types from a distributed set of probes. It is the best fit here when you need to compare the route from different vantage points rather than rely on one remote server. Custom measurements use credits, so check current account and credit requirements before planning repeated tests.

2. RIPE Atlas QuickLook

QuickLook is an Atlas reachability tool for starting an instant ping or traceroute and viewing results on an interactive world map. The service listing describes it as free for RIPE NCC members; check the live page for current eligibility and terms before relying on that access detail.

3. RIPE Atlas Khipu

Khipu visualizes RIPE Atlas measurement data, including traceroute paths. Use it to explore path data through its different views. It is a visualization tool built around Atlas measurements, not an additional probe network.

4. RIPE Atlas Path Analysis

Path Analysis is designed to compare traceroute data over time. It can help investigate route changes, performance degradation, and transitions involving autonomous systems (ASNs) or internet exchange points (IXPs). It compares Atlas measurement data; it does not independently measure from a separate network.

5. traceroute.dev Looking Glass

traceroute.dev offers traceroute, MTR, and ping from multiple probes, with probe locations and networks displayed. Use the location and network information to judge whether a result is relevant to your affected path. The number of available probes can change, so do not assume an advertised count is permanent.

10. A nearby ISP or hosting-provider looking glass

This is a category, not one specific verified service. Some ISPs and hosting providers offer public looking glasses that run diagnostics from their networks. Search the affected provider’s support resources, then check its interface for traceroute support, the location of the test origin, and any access limits. Do not assume every provider has a public tool.

How to choose a vantage point and measurement

Match the probe to the affected network

A trace answers, “What route does traffic take from this probe to the destination?” If you are investigating a user’s home connection, a data-center host, or a specific ISP, a probe elsewhere may take a different route. Prefer a tool that identifies probe locations and networks; compare multiple origins if the fault appears regional or provider-specific. An online trace can complement a local trace, but it cannot stand in for one when the source network itself is the question.

Pick the right diagnostic mode

  • Traceroute: Shows successive hops observed by probes with increasing time-to-live (TTL).
  • Ping: Checks reachability and round-trip responses to a destination; it does not reveal the full route.
  • MTR: Combines repeated route and latency observations and can help investigate variation over time. Like traceroute, it depends on intermediate devices responding to diagnostic probes.
  • DNS or HTTP checks: Help test name resolution or an application-level request when a route alone does not answer the question.

For a one-off question, a quick multi-probe service may be enough. For a route change or an intermittent issue, repeated measurements or comparisons over time are more informative. RIPE Atlas uses credits for custom measurements; check current terms rather than assuming every custom test is free.

How to interpret traceroute results accurately

A hop time is not a simple per-router delay

Traceroute sends probes with increasing TTL values. When a router decrements a probe’s TTL to zero, it may return an ICMP Time Exceeded message. The displayed round-trip time for that hop is the time for the probe to reach the router and for its response to return. It is not a delay that can simply be assigned to that router or added to other hop times.

A missing reply does not prove packet loss

Routers may ignore diagnostic probes or handle them differently from ordinary forwarded traffic. A silent hop by itself does not establish that packets are being dropped for application traffic. Check end-to-end behavior, repeat the measurement, and compare another origin or protocol when available.

A route map is not a cable map

Displayed geographic positions are estimates. Lines connecting mapped hops represent the visualization of the observed route, not proof of the physical cable route traffic followed.

A trace that stops early is inconclusive on its own

If the destination does not appear, the trace alone may not identify why. Filtering, probe or return-path behavior, and an actual reachability problem are all possibilities; the result by itself does not establish which occurred. Compare with another probe and test the destination separately.

Troubleshooting common results

Online and local traces disagree

First compare the origins. The online service measures from its probe, while a local command measures from your own network. Different ISPs, regions, and routes can produce different paths without either result being wrong. If possible, run from a probe near the affected network and compare a second origin.

One hop shows a long time or no response

Do not conclude that the hop is causing a slowdown or dropping forwarded traffic from one line in the output. Repeat the trace and check end-to-end latency or application behavior. A router’s response to diagnostic traffic is not necessarily representative of how it forwards normal traffic.

The destination is absent

Try another probe and test reachability separately. A trace that stops early does not distinguish filtering from return-path behavior or a genuine outage without corroborating evidence.

The test service has no useful origin

Choose another service that lists a probe near the network you care about, or check whether the ISP or host involved runs a public looking glass. If you cannot obtain a relevant vantage point, state that limitation when interpreting the result rather than treating a distant probe as a direct reproduction.

ScreenshotNeo is for a different kind of troubleshooting

ScreenshotNeo is not a traceroute service and cannot show network hops. If the issue you are investigating is what a website renders—such as a consent banner, popup, or blank-looking page—rather than how packets route, it may be a useful alternative to try first. Its API returns a website screenshot or PDF; the product is at ScreenshotNeo.

Choose the next test from the question you need answered

  • For distributed route measurements, start with RIPE Atlas; use Path Analysis for comparisons over time and Khipu for visualization.
  • For a quick check from several listed origins, consider traceroute.dev or mtr.si and inspect the probe location.
  • For a provider-specific path, use a looking glass only after confirming its origin and supported commands.
  • For any apparent failure, corroborate a missing hop with end-to-end tests or a trace from another relevant origin.
