The 10 rookies to watch at NBA training camp are the first 10 picks in the 2026 lottery, from AJ Dybantsa in Washington to Brayden Burries in Milwaukee. Each has a distinct question to answer: where minutes and touches will come from, what role the team needs, and how the player adjusts to the NBA. This is an editorial watch list based on draft position and current league coverage—not a prediction that these will be the 10 most productive rookies. Camp roles remain provisional.
Why these 10 rookies are worth watching
The NBA’s September 15, 2026 preview puts a useful historical marker in context: 39 of the past 40 Kia Rookie of the Year winners came from the top 14 lottery slots. That history makes draft position a reasonable starting point, but it does not settle who will play, how quickly they will adjust, or who will produce most. Team opportunity and role matter as the season begins. NBA.com’s preview also emphasizes those changing circumstances.
The three comparison lenses below are questions to track, not statistical rankings or minutes projections.

| Pick and player | Opportunity and role question | Transition test to watch |
|---|---|---|
| No. 1 AJ Dybantsa, Washington Wizards | How will Washington distribute creation and responsibility between its rookie and veterans? | Joining a young roster that the NBA preview says will look to Trae Young and Anthony Davis for leadership. Dybantsa scored about a point per minute in Las Vegas Summer League, a brief exhibition sample rather than a regular-season forecast. |
| No. 2 Darryn Peterson, Utah Jazz | Can he contribute beyond scoring while sharing the floor with established teammates? | The NBA preview names Lauri Markkanen, Keyonte George, and Jaren Jackson Jr. as teammates whose fit matters to his role. Peterson is a 6-foot-5 guard, according to that preview. |
| No. 3 Cameron Boozer, Memphis Grizzlies | A reconfigured Memphis roster could leave room for minutes and usage; how much responsibility will the team give him? | The NBA lists him at 6-foot-9 and 253 pounds, at forward/center, and identifies him as college Player of the Year. His Summer League first-team recognition and reported intelligence and shooting make the transition worth following. |
| No. 4 Caleb Wilson, Chicago Bulls | Wilson has said he wants Rookie of the Year and to lead a Bulls resurgence; camp can begin to show what responsibility the team gives him. | The 6-foot-10 forward’s early-season meeting with Dybantsa is an immediate head-to-head storyline, not a verdict on either rookie. |
| No. 5 Keaton Wagler, LA Clippers | How will the Clippers use his shooting and ball-handling around Darius Garland? | The NBA preview calls fitting alongside Garland in the backcourt Wagler’s biggest test. The precise balance of on-ball and off-ball work remains a camp question, not a confirmed rotation plan. Wagler is a 6-foot-6 shooting guard from Illinois. |
| No. 6 Mikel Brown Jr., Brooklyn Nets | Can he organize the offense and make sound choices when NBA defenses apply pressure? | Brown is a 6-foot-5 point guard from Louisville. He told the NBA that former All-Star Rajon Rondo mentored him, including through film sessions, with a simple lesson: “Make the simple play.” |
| No. 7 Darius Acuff Jr., Sacramento Kings | How much backcourt opportunity will open up after DeMar DeRozan’s departure? | Acuff averaged 19.0 points and 5.3 assists over three Las Vegas Summer League games, according to the NBA preview. Three games are useful context, not a reliable regular-season projection. |
| No. 8 Kingston Flemings, Atlanta Hawks | Atlanta’s backcourt is crowded, so camp competition will help show whether immediate minutes are available. | At Houston, he averaged 16.1 points per game, with a 3-to-1 assists-to-turnovers ratio and 39% three-point shooting, per the NBA preview. The adjustment is balancing learning with a possible early role. |
| No. 9 Morez Johnson Jr., Dallas Mavericks | What defined job can Dallas give the Michigan forward? | His Michigan coach Dusty May also joined Dallas. May described Johnson as positionally versatile, including able to guard all five positions; camp will show how that versatility translates to an NBA role. |
| No. 10 Brayden Burries, Milwaukee Bucks | The NBA preview anticipates substantial playing time and calls him the highest-profile addition to Milwaukee’s rebuild. | The 6-foot-4 Arizona guard averaged 16.1 points per game in college, according to the preview. Arizona coach Tommy Lloyd described his competitiveness this way: “There’s nothing wrong with being a great human being off the court and being a killer on the court. He definitely has that combination.” |
What the rookies’ own predictions say—and don’t say
In the NBA’s rookie roundtable, updated July 16, 2026, rookies named Dybantsa, Peterson, and Boozer among possible Rookie of the Year contenders. Multiple players named Dybantsa; Dybantsa himself named Peterson. Nate Ament said of Dybantsa, “He’s a great player, got the skill set, the mentality. A good chance to win it.” These are peers’ opinions, not forecasts or evidence of a settled hierarchy. Read the NBA rookie roundtable.

Training-camp impressions are only an early signal. Watch for whether a rookie earns a repeatable role, whether that role gives him the ball or asks him to work off it, and whether the team’s needs change as games begin. NBA.com’s August 14 matchup preview highlights early-season pairings involving Dybantsa, Peterson, Boozer, Wilson, Wagler, and Acuff. Check the official matchup preview for the schedule context; dates, broadcast details, rosters, and availability can change.

For Dybantsa, the opening meeting with Wilson offers a direct rookie comparison. For the others, the more revealing evidence may be less dramatic: who handles the ball, who gets defensive assignments, and whose role remains consistent when the regular season starts. Those details answer the camp question better than draft position or a short Summer League run alone.
