Constellations are officially defined regions of the sky that astronomers use to locate celestial objects. The familiar pictures people trace between stars are a different, more informal part of the story: they are patterns seen from Earth, and cultures have imagined the sky in many ways. Here are 10 facts that make both meanings easier to understand.

1. There are 88 officially recognized constellations

The International Astronomical Union (IAU) agreed on a list of 88 constellations at its first General Assembly in 1922. NASA also describes 88 as the number of officially recognized constellations. This is the standardized system used in modern astronomy, not a claim that other cultures’ sky groupings are less meaningful. IAU: The Constellations; NASA Space Place: What Are Constellations?

2. A constellation is a region of sky, not just a connect-the-dots picture

In modern astronomy, each constellation covers a defined area of the sky. The stars drawn as a picture are a familiar way to represent part of that area, but an object described as being “in” a constellation is within its official boundaries—it need not belong to the picture. The IAU puts it this way: “Nowadays, when astronomers say something is ‘in’ a given constellation, they mean it is simply within those defined boundaries, not that it is part of any star pattern.” IAU: The Constellations

3. The boundaries were standardized in the twentieth century

A list of constellation names was not enough to make a precise map: astronomers also needed to agree where one region ended and another began. Eugène Delporte proposed boundaries aligned with lines of right ascension and declination. The IAU approved the boundaries in 1928, and they were published in 1930. IAU: The Constellations

4. Asterisms and constellations are not the same thing

An asterism is a recognizable star pattern, while an official constellation is a defined region of sky. The Big Dipper, for example, is an asterism within the larger constellation Ursa Major—not a constellation of its own. NASA Science: Skywatching FAQ; NASA Science: What Are Asterisms?

5. Different cultures see different pictures in the stars

The IAU system gives astronomers an international map, but it is not the only way people have organized or understood the night sky. Cultures have developed their own star groupings, names, and stories, shaped by distinct histories and knowledge. Many cultural asterisms continue to be used. 6. Some official constellations are easier to map than to picture

The 88 constellations divide the sky into regions; they are not all equally clear or striking as star drawings. A line pattern depends on which stars someone chooses to connect, and seeing a recognizable figure can take imagination. The official boundary remains useful even when the stars inside it do not make an obvious picture. NASA Space Place: What Are Constellations?; IAU: The Constellations

7. The constellations you can see change with date and location

Earth’s orbit around the Sun changes which direction the night side faces over the course of a year, so different constellations are prominent in different seasons. Your location also matters: the sky visible from one part of Earth is not identical to the sky visible from another. A sky map or star wheel can help match a view to a date, time, and place. 8. Orion’s Belt is a handy guide to finding Orion

Look for three bright stars close together in an almost-straight line: they form Orion’s Belt. The other stars around them suggest the figure of the hunter, making the belt a useful starting point for recognizing Orion. NASA Science: Discovering the Universe Through the Constellation Orion

9. The stars in a constellation are not necessarily near one another

A constellation’s star pattern is a line-of-sight view from Earth. The stars can be at very different distances from us and from one another; they appear together in the sky because of the direction in which we see them, not because they form a physical group. NASA Space Place notes that the stars in a constellation are not connected to each other. NASA Space Place: What Are Constellations?

10. Constellations help with navigation and naming

Stars have helped people navigate, and constellation regions still give astronomers convenient landmarks for describing where stars and other celestial objects appear. Some star names incorporate a constellation’s name. Constellations also lend their names to meteor showers: NASA explains that a shower is named for the constellation toward which its meteors appear to come. The meteors do not necessarily originate in that constellation; it is the apparent direction that supplies the name. NASA Space Place: What Are Constellations?

How to start finding constellations

Begin with a current sky map or make a star wheel, then match it to your location, date, and time. A printed planisphere or rotating star finder is an optional aid, not a requirement. For Orion, first locate the three stars of the Belt, then use the nearby stars to trace the larger pattern. NASA Science: Create a Star Wheel Activity
