For data analysis, the essential SQL building blocks let you choose fields, filter records, connect related tables, summarize results, and control the rows you see. This guide uses MySQL 8.4 syntax where dialect-specific behavior matters. “Commands” is a convenient label here: the ten items include a statement, clauses, and aggregate functions—not ten equivalent command types or an official ranking.
How the ten building blocks fit together
A typical analysis query starts with SELECT and FROM, narrows source rows with WHERE, and may connect tables with a join. GROUP BY and aggregate functions summarize the remaining rows; HAVING filters those groups. Finally, ORDER BY sorts results, a row limiter caps them, and DISTINCT can remove duplicate output rows. In MySQL 8.4, the documented SELECT syntax places these clauses in that broad order, but each stage has its own rules.
1–2. Choose output and source with SELECT and FROM
SELECT
SELECT names the columns or expressions to return. For a stable, readable result, list the fields you need rather than starting with *.
FROM
FROM identifies the table supplying the rows. Together, these clauses make a simple query:

SELECT product_id, category, price
FROM products;
3. Filter source rows with WHERE
WHERE keeps rows that meet a condition, before any grouping and aggregation. For example, this MySQL-style condition selects active products:
SELECT product_id, category
FROM products
WHERE active = 1;
In MySQL 8.4, WHERE cannot refer to aggregate functions such as COUNT() or SUM(). Use HAVING when the condition is about a group’s aggregate result.

4. Combine related tables with JOIN
A join brings rows from related tables together using a relationship between their keys. For example, orders can be joined to their line items through order_id:
SELECT orders.order_id, order_items.product_id, order_items.quantity
FROM orders
JOIN order_items
ON orders.order_id = order_items.order_id;
A join can change the number of rows. If one order has several line items, that order’s fields appear once for each matching item. Before summing or counting after a join, check what one row represents in each table and compare row counts before and after. Otherwise, repeated values from the “one” side can inflate an aggregate. Inner and left joins are common options; choose according to whether unmatched rows should be excluded or retained.

5–7. Summarize groups and filter the summaries
GROUP BY
GROUP BY forms groups of rows that share values, such as all products in the same category. Aggregate functions can then calculate a result for each group.
Aggregate functions: COUNT, SUM, AVG, MIN, and MAX
Aggregates produce summary values: COUNT() counts rows or non-NULL values depending on its argument, SUM() totals values, AVG() calculates an average, and MIN() and MAX() return the smallest and largest values. For example, count active products in each category:

SELECT category, COUNT(*) AS item_count
FROM products
WHERE active = 1
GROUP BY category;
When selecting a non-aggregate field alongside aggregates, make sure it is grouped appropriately under your database’s rules.
HAVING
HAVING filters groups, commonly by an aggregate condition. In MySQL 8.4, WHERE filters source rows and cannot refer to aggregates, while HAVING applies conditions to groups. The distinction is visible in a query that first excludes inactive products, then keeps only categories with at least five active products:

HAVING COUNT(*) >= 5;

ORDER BY
ORDER BY sorts the output. Specify a second sort field to break ties when you need a reproducible ordering—for example, categories with equal counts can be sorted alphabetically after the count.
LIMIT
In MySQL 8.4, LIMIT constrains how many rows a SELECT returns. Other database systems may use different row-limiting syntax, so check the documentation for the system you use.
10. Remove duplicate output rows with DISTINCT
DISTINCT returns unique combinations of the selected values. It does not deduplicate an underlying table; it removes repeated output rows for the selected column combination.
SELECT DISTINCT category
FROM products;
Put the workflow together
This MySQL-style example counts active products by category, keeps categories with at least five, sorts the largest counts first, and returns at most ten rows:

Check your database’s SQL dialect
SQL systems share many ideas but can differ in syntax and rules. This guide’s clause order, aggregate-filter distinction, and LIMIT example are grounded in the MySQL 8.4 Reference Manual: SELECT Statement. For a broader checklist of common SQL topics, see SQLTutorial.org. Confirm row-limiting syntax and grouping behavior in the documentation for your own database before adapting examples.
