These ten small IoT project plans use Wi-Fi, GPIO, sensors, and local web pages to turn an ESP8266 or ESP32 into a useful connected-device prototype. They are proposals, not builds tested for this article; actual wiring and setup depend on your exact board, sensor, and software core.

Choose a board and gather the basics

Both ESP8266 and ESP32 boards can make strong starter projects, but they are not interchangeable. Espressif’s developer documentation maintains separate Arduino documentation for the two families, and the Arduino-ESP32 documentation cautions that its core and libraries are tested for listed ESP32 families—not guaranteed to work with ESP8266 or other non-ESP32 platforms. See Arduino-ESP32 setup and supported families and the Espressif documentation catalog.

ESP32 is a 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi-and-Bluetooth system-on-chip intended for IoT applications. Its Wi-Fi API supports station mode, where the board joins an access point, and access-point mode, where other devices connect to the board; access-point mode can serve a local HTTP or HTTPS page. Details are in Espressif’s ESP32 Wi-Fi API guide.

For any of these projects, start with a development board, a USB data cable that fits it, a breadboard, jumper wires, and the project-specific sensor or display. Before connecting anything, check your board’s connector, pinout, logic voltage, and the component’s voltage and interface requirements. Do not copy pin assignments or assume a sketch will transfer unchanged between ESP8266 and ESP32.

Ten project plans

1. Wi-Fi weather station

Result: A local web page showing current temperature and humidity.

  • Parts: ESP8266 or ESP32 board, compatible low-voltage temperature-and-humidity sensor, breadboard, jumper wires.
  • Wiring and setup: Wire the sensor’s power, ground, and data connections according to its documentation and the exact board pinout. Configure the board for your Arduino environment, connect it to your home Wi-Fi in station mode, read the sensor, and serve the values on a local page.
  • Try next: Add a small display for readings at the device.

2. Room climate logger

Result: A scheduled temperature-and-humidity sample with the latest readings available locally.

  • Parts: Board, compatible temperature-and-humidity sensor, breadboard, jumper wires.
  • Wiring and setup: Connect the sensor using its specified voltage and interface. Set a sampling interval in the sketch and expose the latest reading through a local page. A live page alone does not retain long-term history; keeping a history requires an additional storage or logging approach.
  • Try next: Add a data-storage method suited to the history you want to keep.

3. Plant-soil monitor

Result: A local dry/okay indicator based on a capacitive soil-moisture sensor.

  • Try next: Add a clear on/off state indicator to the local page.

Do not use this beginner demonstration to switch mains electricity. Mains projects require appropriate rated hardware, an enclosure, isolation, and authoritative safety instructions.

Espressif’s 2019 ESP-Jumpstart tutorial is an example of a larger smart-outlet project, including incremental steps for Wi-Fi setup, GPIO switching, a physical button, cloud control, OTA updates, and factory reset. It is useful as an example of project scope, not as a current cloud-service recommendation or a reason to attempt mains wiring.

10. Sensor-triggered alert

Result: A sensor threshold triggers an LED or buzzer, with the current state visible on a local page.

Set up the software for your board

  1. Identify the exact board. Check the manufacturer’s board name and revision, USB connector, pinout, and supported voltage before selecting a board definition or wiring a component.
  2. Install the matching Arduino core. For ESP32, use the Arduino-ESP32 getting-started instructions and install through Arduino IDE Boards Manager; confirm your family appears in the supported list. For ESP8266, use its separate Arduino documentation rather than assuming ESP32 instructions or libraries apply.
  3. Check every component interface. Confirm voltage, signal type, and pin compatibility for the sensor, display, button, or driver. Choose board pins based on the exact board documentation, not a pin map from a different model.
  4. Build and test in small steps. First verify that the board uploads a simple sketch. Then test the sensor or button, add the indicator or web page, and finally connect the network feature. This makes wiring, library, and network problems easier to separate.

Pick a project by what you want to learn

  • First sensor reading: Start with the weather station, plant monitor, or door/window sensor.
  • Local networking: Try the dashboard or signal monitor; for a directly accessible local page, the ESP32 access-point mode is one option.
  • Two-device communication: Choose the button-to-indicator link after verifying board and core support.
  • Outputs and control: Try the leak notifier or low-voltage relay demo, keeping the load within the hardware’s ratings.
