They are best read as a historical gallery, not as a current browser-compatibility guide: Sam Deering’s SitePoint roundup was published on March 27, 2012, and updated on February 12, 2024. Read the SitePoint showcase.
Ten HTML5 and JavaScript experiments
The examples span several kinds of browser interaction. Some emphasize visual effects, others respond to a mouse or keyboard, and a few are closer to tools or demonstrations of browser performance. The roundup does not report controlled performance measurements across the demos, so the comparisons below are descriptive rather than benchmark results.
1. Canvas Sphere
Emil Korngold’s Canvas Sphere projects points from a 3D sphere into a 2D view using a small sprite 3D engine. Z-sorting and alpha motion blur help suggest depth and rotation, illustrating how a convincing spatial effect can be assembled from rendered points and visual cues.
2. Marbles
Marbles is a physics experiment built with the A3 WebGL Engine. The original roundup said Chrome was needed to view it; that is a historical instruction, not a verified recommendation for current browsers. Check the live demo and your browser before relying on it.

8. One Hour Per Second
This YouTube-created HTML5 page put video-upload volume into context with comparisons. In the article’s 2012 framing, one example translated the stated upload rate of one hour of video per second into 345,600 nyan-cat “nyans” in a day. That figure belongs to the historical experience and should not be read as a current YouTube statistic.
9. Asteroid Belt
Asteroid Belt overlays an HTML5 animation effect on a photograph. It demonstrates how an animated layer can add motion and atmosphere to an otherwise static image.

SitePoint author Sam Deering framed the collection in 2012 as “some of the crazy HTML5 and JavaScript experiments that demonstrate the performance of the framework in rendering a variety of cool interactive effects.” That is the article’s original characterization, not a present-day performance finding.
How to create your own HTML5 and JavaScript experiments
A useful starting point is familiarity with HTML5 Canvas and JavaScript. Begin with one effect or interaction—such as drawing a trail, animating a shape, or responding to a click—then add complexity only as needed. Deering’s article names Three.js and Paper.js as libraries that can simplify complex graphics and animation; these are source-era suggestions, not a current evaluation of the libraries.
- Choose a small idea. Decide whether you want to render an effect, simulate motion, make a drawing tool, or visualize relationships.
- Match the technique to the idea. Canvas can suit 2D drawing and effects; the examples also show WebGL, particle motion, and force-directed layouts.
- Add one interaction at a time. Decide what a mouse move, click, or key press should change, and make that response apparent.
- Try code-sharing resources. The roundup points readers to CodePen and JSFiddle as places to explore and share code.
- Test before reuse. An experiment that pushes a browser effect may not be suitable for production. Test its behavior and consider performance in the setting where you intend to use it.
For structured learning, choose an HTML5 Canvas or JavaScript programming book that matches the technique and experience level you want to build; the roundup does not verify a particular current title.
How to read the browser-compatibility notes
The roundup’s comments that most demos ran smoothly in Chrome and Firefox but not Internet Explorer describe the support context discussed in an article first published in 2012. They are not a current compatibility test. Browser behavior can change, and the Marbles Chrome instruction is similarly historical. If you want to try a live demo, check that demo in your present browser rather than treating the old notes as current guidance.
