Browser tricks that save time include a few keyboard shortcuts, tab groups, bulk bookmarks, reading mode, and selective sync. The exact controls vary by browser and operating system; the shortcuts below are for Chrome unless noted.
1. Use a few keyboard shortcuts for repeat tasks
Keyboard shortcuts replace repeated trips through menus. In Chrome on Windows, ChromeOS, and Linux, these are useful starting points:
- Ctrl+F: find text on the current page.
- Ctrl+L: focus the address bar.
- Ctrl+Shift+T: reopen the most recently closed tab.
- Ctrl+Shift+D: save all open tabs in a new bookmarks folder.
On Mac, use Command in place of Ctrl for these Chrome shortcuts. Other browsers and operating systems may use different combinations; check the shortcut reference for your browser before relying on them. Google Chrome’s keyboard shortcut reference lists desktop combinations.

Instead of scanning a lengthy article or help page, open Find and search for a distinctive word or phrase. In Chrome, press Ctrl+F on Windows, ChromeOS, or Linux, or Command+F on Mac. Type the term and use the displayed controls to move between matches. This searches the page you have open, not the whole web. Chrome tips also recommends the Find command for locating information quickly.

3. Search or navigate from the address bar
In Chrome, Ctrl+L (or Command+L on Mac) puts the cursor in the address bar. Type a web address to go directly to a site, or enter a query to search with your default search engine. Chrome also supports choosing another search engine by typing its name and pressing Tab, then entering the query. This is a quick route when you know where you want to look but do not need to open a separate search page first. See Chrome’s shortcut reference for platform-specific keys.
4. Reopen a tab you closed by mistake
In Chrome, press Ctrl+Shift+T on Windows, ChromeOS, or Linux, or Command+Shift+T on Mac to reopen a recently closed tab. Press the shortcut again to work back through closed tabs in order. It is often faster than searching your history when the page was closed moments ago. Chrome’s shortcut reference documents the shortcut.

5. Group tabs by task or project
When tabs for unrelated tasks crowd the tab bar, group pages that belong together. A group named “trip,” “shopping,” or “research” makes related tabs easier to recognize; groups can be collapsed to reduce clutter and reordered when priorities change.
In Chrome
Chrome supports named, colored tab groups that can be collapsed and reordered. Use the tab context menu to add tabs to a group or create a new one; menu wording can vary by version. Chrome’s tips page covers tab organization.

In Firefox
Firefox also has built-in tab groups with labels and colors that can be collapsed. The interface is not identical to Chrome’s, so follow Firefox’s own controls rather than expecting the same menus. See Mozilla’s tab groups feature page.
6. Save all open tabs as bookmarks
If you have assembled a useful set of pages for a project and want to return to them later, save them together rather than leaving them open indefinitely. In Chrome, choose Bookmark All Tabs from the tab context menu, or use Ctrl+Shift+D on Windows, ChromeOS, and Linux. On Mac, use Command+Shift+D. Chrome saves the tabs in a new bookmarks folder, which you can name for the project. Chrome’s tips page explains bulk bookmarking, and its shortcut reference lists the keyboard command.

7. Open recurring pages when Chrome starts
For pages you genuinely use at the beginning of every session, Chrome can open selected pages at startup. Find the startup-page controls in Chrome settings and add the sites you want to open. Keep the list short: pages that are only occasionally useful can make every launch more crowded instead of faster. The startup-page option is described on Chrome’s tips page.

8. Use reading mode on text-heavy pages
Chrome’s reading mode offers a more focused view of text and includes text-to-speech. Google’s announcement describes a full-page reading interface intended to remove visual distractions, but the announcement said the feature was beginning to roll out; availability and menu locations may therefore differ by version. If you do not see reading mode in your Chrome menus, it may not be available in your current setup. See Google’s Chrome feature announcement and Chrome’s tips page.

9. Sync only the browser data you want on other devices
Sync can make selected browser information available across devices, but it requires account sign-in and depends on which categories are enabled. Review the sync settings rather than assuming every kind of data is being shared.
Chrome
After signing in with a Google Account, Chrome sync can connect bookmarks, history, payment information, and saved usernames and passwords. Check the available sync settings and choose what to include. Google describes the feature on Chrome’s tips page.
Firefox
Firefox Sync lets you select categories such as tab groups, history, bookmarks, and shortcuts across supported systems. Review those selections in Firefox Sync settings to control what follows you to another device. See Mozilla’s Firefox feature page.

10. Adjust page zoom for easier reading
Zoom changes the size of content on a webpage without requiring you to change the device’s overall display settings. In Chrome on Windows, ChromeOS, and Linux, use Ctrl+plus to zoom in, Ctrl+minus to zoom out, and Ctrl+0 to reset page zoom. On Mac, use the corresponding Command combinations. If a shortcut differs in your browser, use its menu’s zoom controls. The platform-specific Chrome combinations are in Google’s shortcut reference.
