There is no single, generally available Google News API from Google for application developers. In 2026, “Google News API” usually means one of three things: a commercial news-search API, a service that claims to expose Google News-ranked results, or a publisher’s RSS feed. Those approaches differ in corpus, ranking, fields, freshness, history, licensing and price. The ten entries below are therefore candidates to evaluate—not a definitive quality ranking.
For most applications, start by defining whether you need searchable article discovery, continuously updated headlines, Google News-style ranking, or a feed from a specific publisher. Then validate current limits and commercial rights with the provider before shipping.
What “Google News API” can mean
A news-search API
Services such as NewsAPI expose endpoints for finding articles and retrieving top headlines from their own indexed source set. They are useful for questions such as “What new articles were published about the next iPhone today?” but they are not automatically a mirror of Google News.
A Google News-ranked endpoint
GNews documents endpoints for search and for top headlines ranked by Google News. Its ranking, source coverage and response behavior should be treated as that provider’s product characteristics, not as proof that every other service returns the same Google News corpus.

A feed or publisher workflow
A publisher can expose RSS or Atom, which your application can read directly. Google’s publisher guidance says sites are automatically considered for Google News and news surfaces, while Publisher Center manages publication details; neither is a general article-retrieval API. Google’s older Data API documentation covers limited legacy protocols and explicitly does not establish a general Google News search API.
Ten candidates and approaches to investigate
The table is a buying checklist, not a league table. “Not stated” means comparable first-party information was not established here; confirm it from the provider before relying on it.
| Candidate | What it represents | Search or headlines | Freshness and history | Coverage, fields and full text | Free use and commercial terms |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| GNews | Provider documenting Google News-ranked results | Search and top-headline endpoints | FAQ states 12-hour delay and 30 days of history | Confirm languages, regions, source list, returned fields and full-text rights | FAQ states 100 requests/day and 10 articles/request on its free plan; verify paid pricing and production terms |
| NewsAPI | Independent indexed news API | Everything for discovery; Top headlines for current headlines | Developer plan articles are delayed 24 hours | Docs describe query, date, source, language, country, category and source-ID filters; check full-text availability and source coverage | Developer plan: 100 requests/day, development and testing only. Listed Business price: $449/month; Advanced: $1,749/month. Prices are volatile. |
| The Guardian API | Publisher-specific content API | Search within The Guardian’s corpus; headline scope depends on its API | Not stated here | Single-publisher coverage can be valuable when that source is your requirement; verify fields and reuse rights | Check current key limits, attribution and commercial terms |
| NewsData.io | Independent news aggregation API | Verify available search and latest-news endpoints | Not stated here | Verify countries, languages, source coverage, fields and article-body policy | Check current quotas, rate limits, licensing and price |
| Mediastack | Independent news aggregation API | Verify search and latest-news capabilities | Not stated here | Verify geographic and language coverage, historical window and full-text rights | Check current free allowance and production license |
| Currents | Independent news API | Verify search, latest-news and headline-style endpoints | Not stated here | Confirm source universe, languages, fields and article-content limits | Check current developer quota, paid plans and redistribution terms |
| Newscatcher | Independent news-search and monitoring service | Verify query, filtering and current-news endpoints | Not stated here | Confirm history depth, source and language filters, response fields and full-text policy | Check current trial, rate limits and commercial rights |
| Webz.io | Web and news data platform | Verify news-specific search and filtering products | Not stated here | Confirm collection method, history, fields, language and permitted use | Check current credits, contracts and redistribution terms |
| Google News RSS or Atom feeds | Feed-based approach, not a documented general API | Only the feed query or publisher feed you can access | Depends on feed availability and polling | Usually limited to what the feed publishes; no guaranteed Google-wide index or stable schema | Review each publisher’s terms and robots/access behavior |
| Google Publisher Center | Publisher-management workflow, not retrieval | Not an article-search endpoint | Not applicable | Helps publishers manage publication details; participation does not guarantee placement | No substitute for a licensed application data source |
How to choose for your application
Choose by data objective
- Breaking headlines: Compare headline endpoints, update delay, country/category filters and polling limits. NewsAPI separates Top headlines from Everything; GNews documents top headlines ranked by Google News.
- Historical or investigative search: Ask for the documented history window, date filtering, deduplication behavior and pagination limits. A “news API” label alone does not establish historical depth.
- One publisher: A publisher API such as The Guardian API can be more predictable than an aggregator when source-specific content is the requirement.
- Google News-like ranking: Prefer a provider that explicitly documents that ranking, then test representative queries. Do not assume an independent index reproduces Google’s ordering.
- Publisher-owned feeds: RSS or Atom may be appropriate for a small, known source list, but they are not a search of Google’s entire news index.
Check the response contract
Before coding, record the exact schema: stable article identifier, canonical URL, title, description, publication timestamp, source name, language, country, image URL, author and body text. Confirm whether “full text” is supplied, excerpted, licensed for storage, or merely linked. Decide how you will handle duplicate syndication, corrections and deleted pages.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsCheck operational limits
- Requests per day and per second, maximum page size and pagination rules.
- Delay between publication and availability.
- History retention and whether date filters include the publication timezone.
- Timeout, retry and quota-exhaustion behavior.
- Attribution, caching, storage, redistribution and commercial-use rules.
NewsAPI and GNews: the clearest documented starting points
NewsAPI
NewsAPI documents Everything for article discovery and Top headlines for breaking headlines. Filters include query, date, source, language, country, category and source identifier, with restrictions on combining country/category and source filters. Its Developer plan is explicitly for development and testing only, not staging or production, and its articles are delayed by 24 hours. The listed Business and Advanced prices are monthly figures surfaced on its pricing page on September 30, 2026; recheck them before purchase because prices and limits can change.

GNews
GNews documents both search and Google News-ranked top-headline endpoints. Its FAQ states that the free plan allows 100 requests per day, returns up to 10 articles per request, has a 12-hour delay and provides 30 days of history. Those constraints may be sufficient for a prototype but can be restrictive for polling, broad monitoring or low-latency alerts. Confirm the plan’s current terms, source coverage and licensing for your jurisdiction and use case.
Designing a reliable integration
Normalize, then deduplicate
Store the provider’s article ID when available, plus canonical URL, source, publication time and retrieval time. Normalize URLs by removing only tracking parameters you are legally and technically allowed to remove. Use a content hash or canonical URL to collapse syndicated duplicates, while preserving source attribution.
Use a polling budget
Poll only as often as your freshness requirement justifies. Cache unchanged query results, back off after 429 responses, and separate high-priority headline queries from broad archive searches. A provider’s stated daily quota is not a promise of latency; measure availability and delay in your own workload.
Plan for missing and changing articles
News pages can be corrected, paywalled, removed or replaced. Keep the provider response metadata and retrieval timestamp, but do not store or redistribute article text unless the license allows it. Treat image URLs and excerpts as potentially expiring.

Common mistakes and fixes
Assuming the name means an official Google product
Symptom: Your design expects a Google-issued API key or a complete Google News index. Fix: Select a documented third-party API, a publisher feed, or a publisher workflow according to the actual requirement.
Using a free development plan in production
Symptom: Requests fail or the license is non-compliant after launch. Fix: NewsAPI’s Developer plan is limited to development and testing; obtain a production plan or choose a service whose terms permit your deployment.
Expecting real-time alerts from delayed data
Symptom: A breaking story appears hours late. Fix: Compare documented delay windows—NewsAPI states 24 hours for Developer, while GNews states 12 hours on its free plan—and select a plan with suitable freshness.
Comparing article counts as if they were equivalent
Symptom: Two APIs return different results for the same query. Fix: Compare corpus, ranking, language, region, deduplication, time zone and filtering semantics before judging quality.
Or skip the browser setup
When your workflow needs a visual capture of a news page rather than structured article data, ScreenshotNeo is the alternative to try first: it removes cookie banners, newsletter popups and chat widgets before capture; bot checks, blank pages and failed loads are never billed; and its MCP server lets AI agents take screenshots. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card, and paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.
One GET request returns an image or PDF. See the ScreenshotNeo documentation for all options.
cURL

The Bottom Line
“Google News API” is a category label, not a guaranteed Google product. Start with a documented provider such as NewsAPI or GNews when its limits and terms fit, validate every candidate against your required freshness and licensing, and use RSS only when a known publisher feed is sufficient.
