The 10 best free accounting apps for small business and bookkeeping depend on what “free” means. For U.S. users, Zoho Books Free is the strongest cloud choice below its $50,000 annual-revenue limit; Wave Starter suits simple invoicing; GnuCash and Manager Desktop avoid subscriptions; Akaunting provides a self-hosted option.

This list excludes products that are only free trials, including the usual trial-based editions of QuickBooks Online, Xero, FreshBooks, Sage, and Patriot. It separates permanent $0 cloud plans from free desktop applications, open-source software, and self-hosted systems whose hosting and maintenance can still cost money.

Prices and plan details change frequently. The U.S. commercial pricing signals cited in this guide were supplied as observed August 16, 2026; verify the linked vendor page before signing up.

Key takeaways

  • Zoho Books Free costs $0 indefinitely for eligible U.S. businesses below the stated $50,000 annual-revenue threshold and includes invoicing, reconciliation, reports, expenses, and contractor tools.
  • Wave Starter remains a $0 plan, but Wave says automatic bank imports, receipt scanning, transaction merging, and automatic categorization are Pro features.
  • GnuCash is genuinely free, open-source, double-entry desktop accounting, while Manager Desktop offers a more guided local-software experience without a recurring subscription.
  • Akaunting, Dolibarr, and ERPNext can be free when self-hosted, but hosting, security, backups, support, and technical labor are separate costs.
  • Free accounting software usually does not include payroll, full tax filing, advanced inventory, unlimited automation, or professional bookkeeping help.

What counts as free accounting software?

“Free accounting software” describes several different arrangements, and the difference matters more than the $0 headline.

#1 Best Overall
Bookkeeper: Easily Manage Your Business Finances
  • You can now print to blank check stock. Customization of the check layout is "not" possible at this time. Check the Help file for additional details.
  • Electronic form filing for W-2, 1099-NEC and 1099-MISC is available through a third party service (there is a nominal fee for this service).
  • Tax forms for 2022
  • Includes tax tables for 2023
  • Support for new 1099-NEC form
Free in what sense? What the user receives What the user still pays or manages
Forever-free cloud plan Browser-based bookkeeping with no recurring subscription while eligibility lasts Feature, revenue, user, geography, transaction, payment-processing, or support limits
Free desktop software Installed accounting software with local files and no monthly subscription Installation, backups, updates, file security, and collaboration
Free self-hosted software An open-source application that can be installed on your own server Hosting, domain or SSL costs where applicable, security, backups, monitoring, maintenance, and technical labor
Free with paid add-ons Basic books or invoices at $0 Bank feeds, receipt OCR, payroll, payment processing, ACH, extra users, inventory, or live support
Free trial Temporary access to a paid product A subscription after the trial ends

A free plan is not automatically a complete accounting system. Formal double-entry bookkeeping should support a chart of accounts, transaction categorization, a general ledger, reconciliation, and reports such as a profit-and-loss statement and balance sheet. Some invoicing-first products provide useful bookkeeping but are less suitable for complex inventory, payroll, or multi-entity accounting.

How were the best free accounting apps selected?

The recommendations use a practical framework rather than unexplained numerical scores. The most important question is whether a business can keep using the software at $0, not whether a vendor offers a 14-day trial.

Criterion Weight What it means
Genuine ongoing $0 access 20% A permanent, commercially usable free route rather than a temporary trial
Core bookkeeping 20% Double-entry accounting, chart of accounts, categorization, reconciliation, and reports
Invoicing and payments 10% Invoices, estimates, recurring invoices, online payments, and payment fees
Automation 10% Bank feeds, receipt capture, categorization, matching, and reminders
Limits 10% Revenue, user, entity, transaction, invoice, and geographic restrictions
Ease of use 10% Setup, navigation, and the accounting knowledge required
Data ownership and export 10% Backups, export formats, portability, and control of the accounting file
Growth path 10% Paid upgrades, payroll, inventory, projects, integrations, and accountant access

The rankings are editorial categories such as “best overall” and “best desktop option,” not laboratory scores or the result of hands-on testing. Current availability for ZipBooks, Frappe Books, Express Accounts, Dolibarr, and ERPNext requires confirmation on the official product pages before publication.

1. Is Zoho Books Free the best overall free accounting app?

Zoho Books Free is the best overall cloud option for an eligible U.S. solopreneur or microbusiness that wants more than basic invoicing. Zoho’s U.S. pricing page lists the Free plan at $0 per organization per month, available indefinitely while annual business revenue remains below $50,000.

The plan includes invoices, quotes, expenses, journals, vendor management, mileage tracking, customer-facing payment features, reminders, recurring invoices, bank reconciliation, financial reports, contractor tracking, and 1099-related tools. Zoho lists one user plus one accountant, and email support is included.

Zoho Books is therefore a real bookkeeping system rather than merely an expense notebook. It is particularly appropriate for freelancers, independent contractors, single-member LLCs, consultants, agencies, and small service businesses that want browser and mobile access.

The $50,000 threshold is decisive. A business that exceeds the threshold may need to move to a paid edition, so “free indefinitely” means free while eligible rather than free regardless of growth. Zoho’s U.S. pricing page lists Standard at $20 monthly or $15 monthly when billed annually, with higher tiers for projects, inventory, automation, and analytics; confirm those prices before purchase.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose Zoho Books Free if: your business is in the United States, annual revenue is below the stated threshold, and you want reports, reconciliation, invoices, expenses, and contractor tools in the cloud.

Avoid it if: your business is above the threshold, needs advanced inventory or payroll bundled into the free plan, or depends on an unsupported bank, payment processor, or tax workflow.

2. Is Wave Starter still free?

Wave Starter is still a $0 plan and is best for straightforward invoicing and bookkeeping, but current Wave documentation makes clear that older descriptions of the free plan are outdated. Wave’s “Is Wave free?” documentation identifies automatic bank-transaction imports, receipt scanning, automatic merging, and automatic categorization as Pro features.

Starter includes unlimited estimates, invoices, bills, bookkeeping records, customer management, cash-flow views, and mobile invoicing. The free plan can work well for a freelancer or service business that manually enters transactions or imports bank activity by file.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

SAGE 50 Pro Accounting 2024 U.S. Retail Edition | Boxed Version
  • TRUSTED ACCOUNTING SOFTWARE: For 42 years, Sage has supported small businesses with reliable accounting software to grow their business. Sage 50 Pro Accounting (formerly Peachtree Accounting Software) includes a one-year Sage Business Care plan with access to online support. Trusted by accountants and bookkeepers for decades.
  • SIMPLE TO START: Powerful 1-User Accounting Software designed for small businesses. Choose from various business models to create the right chart of accounts and customize reports in real time with no prior accounting knowledge required.

  • IMPROVE CASH FLOW: Use job costing to calculate job profitability and make more informed business decisions. Monitor cash flow, track payments and expenses, and manage finances with confidence using accounting software for small business.
  • MANAGE INVENTORY: Keep track of inventory to ensure you have what you need, when you need it. Create purchase orders, manage expenses, and track spending with ease using inventory management software designed for growing businesses.

Wave Pro is listed at $19 per month or $190 per year in U.S. pricing. Pro adds bank automation, receipt scanning, transaction merging, and categorization. A user who chooses Wave primarily for automatic bookkeeping should include the Pro cost in the decision rather than assuming the $0 plan provides bank-feed automation.

Payment processing is also separate from the bookkeeping subscription. Wave’s payment-fee documentation lists U.S. Starter card rates of 2.9% plus $0.60 for Visa, Mastercard, and Discover, and 3.4% plus $0.60 for American Express. ACH is listed at 1% with a $1 minimum. A $100 Visa payment would therefore cost approximately $3.50, while a $20 ACH payment would be subject to the $1 minimum.

Payroll and bookkeeping services are paid add-ons, and payroll availability depends on location and business type.

Choose Wave Starter if: you mainly need invoices, simple income and expense records, and mobile invoicing, and you are comfortable entering or importing bank transactions manually.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Avoid it if: automatic bank feeds, receipt OCR, advanced inventory, or extensive automation are essential but you do not want to pay for Pro.

3. Is GnuCash good for small-business bookkeeping?

GnuCash is the best genuinely free desktop option for users who understand or are willing to learn double-entry bookkeeping. The official GnuCash site describes a free, open-source desktop accounting application with small-business accounting capabilities.

GnuCash is built around formal double-entry accounting and supports business accounts, reports, invoices, customers, vendors, and accounts receivable and payable workflows. Local storage means there is no subscription, revenue ceiling, or vendor-hosted company file.

The trade-off is convenience. GnuCash is less beginner-friendly than modern cloud software, and chart-of-accounts setup requires care. Browser collaboration, mobile access, automated bank workflows, and simultaneous multi-user access are not its central strengths. The business owner must maintain backups, protect the accounting file, install updates, and plan how an accountant will receive reports or data.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

GnuCash is a strong fit for a low-volume business that values local control more than convenience. GnuCash is not the best choice for a team that needs multiple people working in one browser-based company file.

4. Is Manager Desktop easier than traditional free accounting software?

Manager Desktop is a strong free desktop alternative for a small business that wants a more guided interface and broader business workflows without a recurring software subscription. Manager’s official site provides information about its desktop and cloud editions.

The desktop route can suit a consultant, small service company, or low-volume business that prefers local files and offline access. Manager is often a practical middle ground: less intimidating for some beginners than traditional open-source accounting software, but less dependent on a vendor-hosted account than cloud bookkeeping.

MyInvoices & Estimates Deluxe
  • #1 Best Selling Invoice Software
  • Create Custom Invoices, Estimates & Statements
  • Receive Payments & Track Invoices in One Place
  • Generate Reports on Sales, Invoices, Inventory & More
  • PLUS! Data Backup, Label Creation & Credit Card Processing

The important distinction is that free desktop access does not mean free cloud collaboration. Hosted access, mobile convenience, bank integrations, and multi-user workflows may differ from the desktop edition. Users should confirm that the chosen edition can export the general ledger, trial balance, transaction detail, invoices, and attachments required by their accountant.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A desktop accounting file also needs a backup policy: keep an automated local backup, store a second copy off-device, test restoration periodically, restrict file access, and archive completed financial years.

5. Is Akaunting really free if you self-host it?

Akaunting is the best fit for a technically capable business that wants open-source software and control over where its accounting data is stored. Akaunting describes its self-hosted Standard version as free, open-source, online accounting software for small businesses and freelancers.

Self-hosting changes the cost rather than eliminating it. The business may need a server, backups, security patching, monitoring, email delivery, access controls, and someone who can recover the application when an update or integration fails. Hosted services and extensions may also cost money.

Akaunting makes sense for an agency, developer, nonprofit, or organization that already administers web infrastructure and considers data ownership important. Akaunting is a poor choice for an owner who wants zero maintenance and immediate bank connectivity.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

6. Is ZipBooks Starter still a useful free accounting option?

ZipBooks Starter is a possible lightweight online option for invoicing, payments, expense tracking, and basic bookkeeping, but current plan availability and feature limits should be confirmed directly before committing. ZipBooks’ official site is the appropriate source for current Starter terms.

ZipBooks may suit a very small service business whose primary workflow is sending invoices and recording payments. The decision should depend on whether the current free plan includes the reports, bank connections, users, exports, and accountant access the business requires.

Do not rely only on third-party comparison pages for current ZipBooks pricing or limits. Test data export and reporting before making ZipBooks the permanent record of a business.

7. Is Frappe Books a good open-source alternative to GnuCash?

Frappe Books is a promising free and open-source desktop alternative for users who want a simpler local accounting application, but its current U.S. feature coverage and maintenance status should be verified before publication or adoption. The official Frappe Books page is the starting point for checking supported operating systems, licensing, and current features.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Potentially relevant capabilities include invoices, expenses, accounts receivable and payable, reporting, tax features, and bank import. The smaller ecosystem means users should also check documentation, release activity, commercial-use licensing, accountant compatibility, and whether a hosted or mobile edition is available.

Frappe Books is best treated as an emerging option rather than a universal recommendation unless current first-party documentation confirms the exact workflow a U.S. business needs.

Express Accounts Accounting Software Free [PC Download]

  • Email and fax reports to your accountant

8. When does Odoo Accounting make sense for a small business?

Odoo Accounting makes sense when accounting is one part of a broader ERP system that also needs CRM, inventory, sales, projects, manufacturing, or e-commerce. Odoo’s pricing page should be checked for the current one-app-free rules, hosting conditions, and application limits.

The free offer should not be described as unlimited free access to every Odoo application. A one-app structure may be useful for a business that needs only accounting, but adding users, applications, hosting, implementation, or customization can create substantial costs.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Odoo is usually overkill for a solo freelancer who needs only invoices, expenses, and a profit-and-loss report. Odoo is more defensible for a growing operation that expects accounting to connect with inventory, customer management, sales, or operations.

9. Can NCH Express Accounts be used free by a small business?

NCH Express Accounts may fit certain very small desktop-based businesses, but free commercial use is eligibility-dependent and must be checked against the current license terms. NCH’s official Express Accounts page should be consulted for current U.S. commercial-use eligibility, employee or revenue restrictions, operating-system support, and upgrade pricing.

Express Accounts can appeal to a business that wants a traditional desktop workflow and possibly a one-time-purchase route. The product should not be presented as universally free unless the intended business clearly qualifies.

Before choosing it, confirm payroll, inventory, banking, reporting, backup, and accountant-sharing capabilities. License terms for commercial software can differ by business category, size, platform, and version.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

10. Are Dolibarr and ERPNext free accounting apps?

Dolibarr and ERPNext are open-source choices for technically capable organizations that need accounting embedded in a broader ERP or business-management system. Their self-hosted software route may avoid a subscription, but neither is usually the simplest bookkeeping solution for a solo operator.

Dolibarr’s official site and ERPNext’s official site should be checked for current accounting modules, hosting options, licensing, and U.S. suitability.

These systems can cover more than bookkeeping and can be customized by a technical team. The cost is administrative: setup, hosting, security, customization, upgrades, backups, support, and tax localization. A business should choose Dolibarr or ERPNext because it needs an ERP, not simply because the software license is free.

Which free accounting app is best for each type of business?

Business or requirement Best starting point Why Important qualification
Freelancer or independent contractor Zoho Books Free or Wave Starter Invoices, expenses, reports, and client workflows Wave automation may require Pro; Zoho’s U.S. revenue limit applies
Sole proprietor or single-member LLC Zoho Books Free Cloud bookkeeping, reconciliation, contractor tools, and reports Confirm tax workflow and accountant access
Small service business Zoho Books Free or Wave Starter Invoices, recurring billing, expenses, and cash-flow visibility Payroll and payment processing are separate concerns
Product or inventory business Paid Zoho tier, Odoo, ERPNext, or another verified inventory system Inventory and cost-of-goods-sold needs often exceed basic free plans Do not assume a free bookkeeping plan handles advanced inventory
Desktop-only business Manager Desktop or GnuCash No recurring subscription and local file control The owner must handle backups and collaboration
Accounting-literate user GnuCash Formal double-entry accounting with no revenue cap Higher learning curve and weaker browser collaboration
Self-hosting and data ownership Akaunting Open-source, self-hosted deployment Hosting, security, and maintenance are not free
Agency with billable time Zoho Books, FreshBooks paid, or another verified project/time tool Projects and time tracking may matter more than basic invoicing Free-plan project features require confirmation
Nonprofit or community organization GnuCash, Manager, or a verified open-source ERP Local control and low recurring cost Check fund accounting, permissions, reporting, and grant requirements
Outside bookkeeper or accountant Zoho Books or a platform recommended by the accountant Cloud access and standardized reports are easier to share Ask about exports, adjusting entries, attachments, and reconciliation history
Business outside the United States Verify local edition before choosing Tax, currency, payroll, and plan rules vary by country Zoho’s $50,000 threshold and Wave details cited here are U.S.-specific

What does free accounting software usually exclude?

Free bookkeeping software commonly excludes the features that save the most manual work or create regulatory obligations.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Bank-feed connections: A free plan may require CSV imports or manual transaction entry. Bank connections can also fail because of unsupported institutions, expired authentication, multifactor-authentication changes, or an aggregator losing access.
  • Automatic categorization and receipt OCR: Wave identifies these automation features as Pro rather than Starter features.
  • Payroll: Payroll requires wage calculations, tax withholding, filings, payments, and jurisdiction-specific compliance. A free accounting ledger is not a free payroll service.
  • Payment processing: Software can cost $0 while card and ACH transactions still incur fees. Payment-processing rates vary by plan, payment type, card network, country, and vendor.
  • Extra users and entities: A free plan may allow one owner and an accountant but charge for additional users, companies, permissions, or collaboration.
  • Advanced inventory: Product businesses may need purchasing, warehouses, stock valuation, cost of goods sold, and sales-channel integrations.
  • Sales-tax automation: State and local sales-tax obligations depend on nexus, product type, location, filing frequency, and registration status.
  • Live support and cleanup: Free plans commonly provide documentation or email support rather than a bookkeeper who corrects historical errors.
  • Cloud hosting: Self-hosted Akaunting, Dolibarr, or ERPNext avoids some software fees but does not eliminate infrastructure and administration.

Is free accounting software enough for tax filing?

Free accounting software generally produces bookkeeping records and financial reports; it does not automatically prepare and file every federal, state, local, payroll, sales-tax, or information return.

SAGE 50 Premium Accounting 2024 U.S. Retail Edition 1-User | PC Download
  • TRUSTED ACCOUNTING SOFTWARE: For 42 years, Sage has supported small businesses with reliable accounting software to grow their business. Sage 50 Premium Accounting (formerly Peachtree Accounting) includes a one-year Sage Business Care plan with access to online support. Trusted by accountants and bookkeepers for decades.
  • SIMPLE TO START: Powerful 1-User Accounting Software designed for small businesses. Choose from various business models to create the right chart of accounts, easily pay bills, invoice customers, and track costs with confidence using Sage 50 Accounting.
  • PAY BILLS & INVOICE: Spend less time on administrative tasks with bookkeeping and invoicing software that lets you easily pay bills and invoice customers while tracking billable and non-billable costs for each job. Streamline daily financial management and reporting.
  • CALCULATE JOB COSTS & MANAGE INVENTORY: Use job costing by phase and cost type to calculate job profitability and make informed business decisions. Track inventory to ensure you have what you need, when you need it, with powerful inventory management software and reporting tools.
  • MANAGE FINANCES: Audit trails and advanced budgeting tools help you stay on top of business performance and finances. Create purchase orders, manage expenses, track spending, and utilize payroll and financial reporting capabilities to support business growth.

Zoho Books advertises contractor tracking and 1099-related preparation and filing features on its U.S. Free plan, but those tools are not the same as complete federal, state, and local tax compliance. A business may still need a CPA or enrolled agent, tax-preparation software, payroll-tax services, state and local sales-tax filings, 1099 filing, estimated-tax calculations, or year-end adjusting entries.

Tax treatment also depends on facts the software cannot infer reliably. Cash-basis and accrual-basis reporting can differ, inventory businesses may need cost-of-goods-sold accounting, and contractor-reporting requirements depend on the payment and entity circumstances. Ask a tax professional what reports and adjustments are required for the business.

What bookkeeping workflow should a free app support?

A usable accounting system should support a repeatable monthly workflow, whether transactions arrive through a bank feed, CSV import, or manual entry.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Connect a supported bank or import current bank activity from a file.
  2. Categorize income and expenses using a consistent chart of accounts.
  3. Match transfers, customer payments, invoices, bills, and deposits instead of recording duplicates.
  4. Attach receipts and other source documents where the software supports attachments.
  5. Review unpaid invoices and bills, including overdue customer balances.
  6. Reconcile each bank and credit-card account to the original statement.
  7. Run a profit-and-loss report, balance sheet, and cash-flow view at least monthly.
  8. Investigate unusual balances, duplicate transactions, negative accounts, and unexplained transfers.
  9. Lock or archive completed periods when the software and accounting workflow support it.
  10. Back up or export the records and retain original bank statements and important invoices.
  11. Give the tax professional a general ledger, trial balance, transaction detail, and supporting documents at year-end.

Automated feeds reduce typing but do not prove that the books are complete. Businesses should retain bank statements and reconcile regularly even when a cloud application imports transactions automatically.

When should a business stop using free accounting software?

A paid system or professional bookkeeper becomes appropriate when the cost of errors, lost time, or compliance risk exceeds the monthly software fee.

  • The business needs payroll and dependable payroll-tax filings.
  • The business carries inventory or sells through several channels.
  • Multiple employees need daily access and role-based permissions.
  • The business requires advanced sales-tax automation.
  • The accountant requires a specific platform or integrated workflow.
  • Dependable bank feeds and automated reconciliation are essential.
  • The owner cannot maintain backups, reconcile accounts, or correct bookkeeping errors.
  • The business has multiple entities, complex loans, fixed assets, accrual accounting, or significant contractor activity.
  • The business is growing beyond a free-plan revenue or user limit.

Free software is often an excellent starting point, but “I can open the app” is not the same as “the books are accurate.” A bookkeeper or tax professional can be cheaper than correcting a year of miscategorized transactions, missed filings, or unreconciled accounts.

How can you switch safely to a free accounting app?

  1. Export the old records: Download the general ledger, chart of accounts, customer and vendor lists, invoices, bills, receipts, and transaction detail.
  2. Download source documents: Keep bank statements, credit-card statements, payment reports, and tax filings outside the old application.
  3. Choose a conversion date: Use a clean month-end or year-end date whenever possible.
  4. Map the chart of accounts: Decide how old income, expense, asset, liability, equity, and tax accounts correspond to the new system.
  5. Record opening balances: Enter bank, credit-card, loan, accounts-receivable, accounts-payable, inventory, and equity balances accurately.
  6. Import or enter transactions: Use bank imports, CSV files, or manual entry, and avoid importing duplicates.
  7. Reconcile the opening period: Compare the new account balances with the last statement and the old system.
  8. Compare reports: Check profit-and-loss totals, balance-sheet totals, customer balances, vendor balances, and cash against the prior system.
  9. Keep the old system read-only: Preserve it until the first complete period in the new system has been reviewed.
  10. Request professional review: Have an accountant inspect opening balances and the first completed period if the books affect tax filings or financing.

What should you ask an accountant before choosing?

Free accounting software is not automatically accountant-compatible. Ask the accountant whether the platform can export a general ledger, trial balance, transaction detail, invoices, receipts, and reconciliation history.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Also ask whether the accountant can post adjusting entries, preserve attachments, work with the software without sharing a password, and produce the reports needed for the business’s tax return. A platform that is free but forces costly manual cleanup may not be the least expensive choice.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Wave still free for small businesses?

Wave still offers a $0 Starter plan for basic invoicing and bookkeeping. Wave’s current documentation says automatic bank imports, receipt scanning, transaction merging, and automatic categorization are Pro features, so businesses wanting those functions may need the paid Pro plan.

Is Zoho Books really free?

Zoho Books Free is a genuine $0 U.S. cloud plan available indefinitely while the business remains below Zoho’s stated $50,000 annual-revenue threshold. The plan has limits, including the listed one-user-plus-one-accountant arrangement, and advanced features require paid tiers.

Can free accounting software file business taxes?

Free accounting software generally creates financial records and reports rather than filing every business tax return. Businesses may still need a CPA or enrolled agent, tax-preparation software, payroll-tax services, sales-tax filing, 1099 filing, estimated-tax calculations, or year-end adjustments.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is GnuCash suitable for a small business?

GnuCash can be suitable for a low-volume small business whose owner understands double-entry accounting and wants free local software. GnuCash is less suitable when the business needs browser collaboration, easy mobile access, automatic bank workflows, or shared multi-user access.

Is self-hosted accounting really free?

Self-hosted accounting software can be free to download and use, but hosting, backups, security updates, monitoring, email delivery, maintenance, and technical labor still create costs. Akaunting, Dolibarr, and ERPNext should therefore be compared with total ownership cost, not just license price.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Choose Zoho Books Free for the strongest all-around cloud bookkeeping when your U.S. business remains below the $50,000 annual-revenue threshold. Choose Wave Starter for simple invoices and books when manual bank imports are acceptable. Choose GnuCash or Manager Desktop when avoiding subscriptions matters more than cloud collaboration. Choose Akaunting when self-hosting and data control justify the maintenance work. Move to paid software or professional bookkeeping when payroll, inventory, multiple users, tax complexity, or error risk makes a free plan too restrictive.
