Zorin OS 16 Lite was designed for older, low-spec computers, but it is now a historical release: Zorin’s announced support period ended in April 2025. If you are considering Zorin Lite today, the current series is OS 18, with support promised until at least June 2029. OS 16 Lite may be useful as a historical reference, but it is not the version to choose for a computer that needs ongoing security updates.
What Zorin OS 16 Lite offered
Zorin announced OS 16 Lite on 8 December 2021 as a streamlined version of its desktop for low-spec computers. The company said it was designed for PCs as old as 15 years; that is Zorin’s design positioning, not a guarantee that every computer of that age will work well or that every component will be supported. The release was based on Ubuntu 20.04.3 LTS and used the XFCE 4.16 desktop. Zorin OS 16 Lite is Here.
Zorin’s release notes described a refreshed visual theme, a rewritten taskbar with window previews, a first-run Tour, and access to Flathub alongside the Snap store and Ubuntu and Zorin APT repositories. They also described detection of some Windows installer files, which could suggest a native alternative or Windows App Support. That feature was guidance for some installers, not a promise that Windows applications would run reliably.
The announcement also listed fractional scaling, Rhythmbox, and changes to Firefox telemetry defaults. Zorin reported that the wider OS 16 release had passed one million downloads in less than four months; this was a historical publisher-reported download count, not a count of active users or a performance measure.

Is Zorin OS 16 Lite still supported?
No. Zorin’s OS 16 Lite announcement said updates would run until April 2025, a date that has passed. Zorin now classifies OS 16 as a historical release and warns that older versions may no longer receive updates or security patches. Its OS archive recommends older versions for non-production virtual machine use, rather than as a current everyday operating system.
A historical download page for OS 16.3 Lite may still be accessible, but availability of an ISO does not mean that the operating system is receiving security fixes. Zorin OS 16.3 Lite download page.

Which Zorin Lite version should you consider instead?
Zorin’s current Lite guidance says Lite is available in the OS 17 and OS 18 series, with full support until at least June 2029. Its current Lite download guidance identifies OS 18.1. Zorin also says it aims to end Lite as an official edition from OS 19 onward. These are Zorin’s published plans and support commitments, not a guarantee that future plans cannot change. Zorin says improvements to its standard editions for older machines and a more cohesive, feature-rich desktop are among the reasons for the planned change. Users who want XFCE after Lite is discontinued may install stock XFCE packages, but those packages will not include Zorin Lite-specific features or optimizations.

Will it run on your older computer?
Zorin’s current general minimum requirements list a 1 GHz dual-core 64-bit Intel or AMD processor, 2 GB of RAM, and a display resolution of 800 × 600. Those figures are for Zorin OS generally; they are not a separate compatibility list for OS 16 Lite and do not guarantee that a specific PC, graphics adapter, Wi-Fi device, printer, or other peripheral will work. There is no independent head-to-head benchmark here comparing OS 16 Lite with Windows 11, nor a tested set of named older PC models. Zorin’s intent to make Lite suitable for older hardware should not be turned into a quantified speed claim. Actual performance depends on the machine, its condition, drivers, workload, and the applications you use.

Check your apps before switching from Windows
List the applications and devices you rely on, then verify that each has a Linux version, an acceptable alternative, or confirmed compatibility with the method you intend to use. Zorin’s 2021 description of suggestions for some Windows installers does not establish that Windows software will work generally. In particular, do not assume that a business-critical app, game, printer utility, or device driver will behave the same on Linux without checking it first.

Zorin’s installation guide recommends backing up important files before changing a disk or its partitions. It specifies a USB flash drive of at least 4 GB for Core and Lite installation media. You can boot from the USB and choose “Try Zorin OS” to check the desktop and test hardware before installing. Zorin cautions that the system runs slower from USB than it does after installation. - Back up important files to a separate drive or service before making installation changes.
- Download the current Zorin Lite ISO using Zorin’s Lite guidance, rather than relying on the unsupported OS 16 release.
- Write the ISO to a USB flash drive with at least 4 GB capacity, following Zorin’s installation instructions.
- Boot the computer from the USB drive and select “Try Zorin OS.” Check display, Wi-Fi, sound, keyboard, trackpad, and any essential peripherals.
- Install only after confirming the needed hardware and applications are suitable and you have a verified backup.
How to decide
- Choose a current Lite release for a live installation: OS 18.1 is the release identified by Zorin’s current Lite guidance, and Zorin states support continues until at least June 2029.
- Treat OS 16 Lite as historical: its announced support ended in April 2025, so it is not the prudent choice for a system that needs current security updates.
- Test the actual PC: the stated minimums are general requirements, not a guarantee of compatibility or acceptable performance on a particular model.
- Verify application needs: confirm the software and peripherals that matter before replacing or repartitioning a Windows installation.
