Short answer: Zorin OS 16 Pro did offer an optional Windows 11-like desktop layout, but there is no evidence that Microsoft tried to hide or suppress Zorin OS. More importantly, Zorin OS 16 reached the end of its update and security-support period in April 2025, so it should not be installed as a current operating system. Use a supported Zorin release instead; the latest release identified in official sources is Zorin OS 18.1, with support for the 18 series listed through June 2029.

What the “Microsoft doesn’t want you to know” claim gets right—and wrong

The headline combines a real product detail with an unsupported implication. Zorin OS 16, released in August 2021, included a Windows 11-like desktop layout in Zorin OS 16 Pro. The layout used centered taskbar icons and a grid-style application menu, making the interface familiar to people moving from Windows.

That resemblance does not make Zorin OS Windows 11, and it does not prove that Microsoft wanted the distribution concealed. The documented sources do not show a Microsoft effort to suppress Zorin OS, an official Microsoft response to its release, or evidence of Microsoft’s intent. Treat the “doesn’t want you to know” wording as provocative headline language, not as an established fact.

What Zorin OS 16 actually offered

A Windows 11-like layout was a Pro option

Zorin OS 16 Pro let users select a desktop arrangement designed to resemble Windows 11. This was a visual and navigational choice inside Zorin Appearance, not a Windows compatibility layer or a Microsoft product. Zorin’s description is a publisher comparison; it is not an independent usability test showing that the two systems behave identically.

Windows installer detection was limited

The Zorin OS 16 release description said its installer could recognize some .exe and .msi files and suggest one of several paths: a native Linux alternative, a game installer through Lutris or Steam, or Windows App Support. That workflow is assistance, not universal Windows-app compatibility. A particular application may still lack a Linux version, require configuration, perform differently, or fail to work.

It was still Linux

Zorin uses Linux software, Linux drivers and Linux system administration. A familiar desktop can reduce the learning curve, but it cannot guarantee that Windows-only programs, peripherals or corporate tools will operate unchanged.

Is Zorin OS 16 still supported?

No. Zorin OS 16.2 stated that the 16 series would receive software updates and security patches until April 2025. That deadline has passed, so an installation of Zorin OS 16 is not a sensible secure choice for a new computer or a daily-use migration.

Choice Best fit Support position Important qualification
Stay with Windows 11 You need software or hardware that is certified specifically for Windows. Subject to Microsoft’s Windows 11 eligibility and servicing requirements. A familiar interface does not remove Microsoft’s hardware, account or connectivity requirements.
Move to a supported Zorin release You want a Linux desktop with a Windows-familiar layout and are willing to check app and device compatibility. Zorin lists the 18 series through June 2029; the latest release identified is 18.1. Visual similarity does not guarantee Windows application or peripheral compatibility.
Try Zorin from a live USB first You want to test Wi-Fi, graphics, sound, printers and essential applications before changing the disk. No installed-system commitment while running the trial environment. USB operation is slower than an installed system, and installation can overwrite data.

Choose based on the programs and devices you actually use, not on the taskbar arrangement alone. Check whether your essential applications have native Linux versions or documented alternatives, and decide whether you need to keep Windows installed for a transition period.

Can you try Zorin OS before installing it?

Yes. Zorin’s installation guide provides a “Try Zorin OS” option after booting from installation media. This lets you inspect the desktop and test hardware without immediately replacing the existing operating system.

USB capacity requirements

  • Core or Lite: use a USB flash drive with at least 4 GB.
  • Pro, Pro Lite or Education: use a drive with at least 16 GB.

Creating the installer erases the USB drive’s existing contents. Copy anything important from it first. Also back up the computer before installing: an operating-system installation can overwrite data if the wrong disk or partition is selected.

Basic trial and installation process

  1. Download the edition you intend to test from Zorin’s official distribution page.
  2. Use balenaEtcher, the utility named in Zorin’s guide, to write the image to the required USB drive. Confirm that the selected USB is the expendable target because its contents will be erased.
  3. Restart the computer and boot from the USB drive using the machine’s boot-menu key or firmware settings.
  4. Select Try Zorin OS rather than installing immediately.
  5. Test wireless networking, display scaling, audio, Bluetooth, printers, external drives and any application you consider essential.
  6. If the results are acceptable, start the installer. Review the disk and partition choices carefully, and keep the backup available.

A live USB session is slower than an installed system, so sluggishness during the trial does not necessarily represent installed performance. Conversely, a successful boot does not prove that every application or device will work after installation.

Who is a good candidate for a supported Zorin release?

  • People who prefer a Windows-familiar menu and taskbar arrangement but want Linux software and administration.
  • Owners of older hardware who want to investigate a lighter desktop, while recognizing that hardware support still has to be tested.
  • Users whose daily applications are available natively on Linux or have reliable, documented alternatives.
  • Anyone willing to run the live-USB trial and keep a recovery plan before changing the disk.

Zorin’s homepage attributes an expectation from the Municipality of Vicenza, Italy, that lower hardware requirements could extend the life of city PCs by “30-40%.” That is an attributed expectation, not a measured result, and the page does not state a publication year for the quotation. It should not be treated as a guaranteed lifespan increase for your computer.

Who should stay with Windows or dual-boot?

Stay with Windows, or retain it alongside Linux, when a work application, game, driver, accessibility tool or peripheral has no acceptable Linux path. A Windows-like appearance cannot reproduce Windows-only dependencies. A dual-boot setup can preserve access to Windows while you evaluate Zorin, but it adds partitioning and boot-management decisions; make a full backup and follow the installer’s disk guidance.

Bottom line on the headline

Zorin OS 16 Pro really did include a Windows 11-like layout, and Zorin offered tools to suggest Linux alternatives or Windows App Support for some Windows installers. The evidence does not support the claim that Microsoft was hiding Zorin OS. Because Zorin OS 16’s support ended in April 2025, test a live USB if you are curious, then choose a currently supported Zorin release—such as the documented 18 series—only after checking your applications, hardware and backup plan.
