For personal video calls today, the practical choice is Zoom or Microsoft Teams Free—not Skype: Microsoft retired consumer Skype on May 5, 2025. Zoom Basic offers meetings for up to 100 participants, but almost all meetings hosted by a Basic user are limited to 40 minutes. Teams Free is Microsoft’s successor route for former Skype users, and Skype contacts and chats transfer when you sign in with Skype credentials, subject to specific exclusions.
Is Skype still available for personal use?
No. Microsoft says consumer Skype retired on May 5, 2025. Its support page directs former users to Teams Free or to export their Skype data: Microsoft’s Skype retirement and transition guidance. Skype for Business is a separate product and was not affected by the consumer Skype retirement.
That means a current personal-use comparison is Zoom versus Teams Free, the alternative Microsoft offers to Skype users. Skype remains relevant mainly for understanding what happened to an old account and what may be carried over.

The products have different documented limits and feature descriptions. The Teams figures below apply only where Microsoft explicitly names a subscription condition; they should not be read as universal free-tier limits.

Microsoft’s Teams features and subscriber-specific figures are described in its Skype transition guidance. These are vendor-published product details, not results from a side-by-side performance test.
How Zoom’s 40-minute limit works
The duration rule is tied to the meeting host’s license. If a Basic user hosts, almost all meetings are limited to 40 minutes. Zoom notes a narrow exception for a host-only meeting that remains active. A Basic user joining a meeting hosted by a licensed user does not impose the Basic limit on that meeting.

So, if you mainly join calls organized by someone else, your own Basic account does not determine the meeting’s duration. If you host regular calls, plan around the 40-minute limit unless your account qualifies for a different rule.

What transfers from Skype to Teams Free?
Microsoft says former Skype users can sign in to Teams Free with their Skype credentials. Contacts and chats transfer automatically, but that does not mean every historical item moves over. Microsoft lists these exclusions:

- Skype-to-Skype for Business chat history

If you do not want to move to Teams Free, Microsoft also provides an option to export Skype data. Check Microsoft’s retirement and transition page for the current account steps and export details.
Which option should you choose?
Choose Zoom Basic if you want a straightforward meeting host
Zoom Basic is a reasonable fit if you want to host personal calls and the documented default capacity of 100 participants is enough. Its key trade-off is the 40-minute limit for almost all meetings hosted by a Basic user.

Choose Teams Free if you want Microsoft’s Skype transition path
Teams Free is the relevant option if you want to continue from a Skype account and bring over eligible contacts and chats. Microsoft also describes messaging, file sharing, meetings, calendar features, and communities as part of Teams Free. Do not assume the 30-hour and 300-person group-call allowances apply unless you have the Microsoft 365 Personal or Family subscription condition Microsoft specifies.
Export Skype data if you do not want to continue with Teams
If neither Teams nor a continued Microsoft account workflow suits you, use Microsoft’s export option rather than assuming retired Skype remains a usable calling service.

Do you need a camera or microphone?
A built-in camera and microphone are usually the simplest setup for personal calls, but they are optional. Microsoft’s browser joining guidance says Teams users can grant camera and microphone permissions or continue without audio or video: Join a meeting in Microsoft Teams Free. An external webcam with a microphone is an option if your built-in devices are unsuitable; extra equipment does not change either service’s account limits.
