Zig had the highest median yearly salary in Stack Overflow’s 2023 programming-language salary results: $103,611 USD. That figure describes survey respondents, not a current salary guarantee—and it does not show that learning Zig causes higher pay. The ranking was specific to 2023; Stack Overflow named Erlang the top language for reported median salary in 2024.
What Stack Overflow’s 2023 survey found
The survey’s top-paying-technologies chart placed Zig first, with a median yearly salary of $103,611 USD. Erlang followed at $99,492 and F# at $99,311. The survey also discussed salary alongside experience. Zig developers averaged 11 years of experience in that analysis, and Stack Overflow said they had the highest pay per years of experience among languages at the same or greater experience. How common was Zig among respondents?
In the 2023 results, 0.83% of all respondents reported extensive Zig development work in the past year. The share was 0.70% among professional developers. Those figures indicate that Zig was used by a small portion of survey respondents; they do not measure the number of available jobs or establish a trend in adoption. Why the salary figure has limits
Stack Overflow analyzed 89,184 qualified responses from 185 countries in 2023. The survey ran from May 8 to May 19, and participants were recruited primarily through Stack Overflow-owned channels. The organization notes that highly engaged users were more likely to notice survey prompts. Salary questions were optional, and reported salaries were converted to US dollars using the June 2, 2023 exchange rate. Experience is only one factor that can affect pay. Language users may differ in seniority, job function, industry, geography, and the kinds of projects they work on. The 11-year average experience note supplies context, but it does not establish that Zig itself produced the higher median.

The ranking changed in later surveys
Stack Overflow’s 2024 survey named Erlang as the language with the highest reported median salary. Its salary page said Erlang and Clojure developers averaged more than $95,000 annually, and described the overall respondent salary range as lower than the prior year. The 2025 survey reported that 64% of Zig users admired the language. In this survey, admiration means respondents wanted to continue using a technology after working with it. It is not a salary ranking or a measure of usage growth. Rust (72%), Gleam (70%), and Elixir (66%) scored higher on admiration. Does learning Zig lead to a higher salary?
The survey does not show that it does. Its 2023 result is evidence that Zig respondents reported a high median salary in that survey year, alongside substantial average experience. It cannot predict an individual’s compensation or show what would happen to the same developer’s pay after learning Zig. Treat the figure as historical survey context, not a reason to expect a particular salary outcome.
