Zig entered the April 2023 TIOBE Programming Community index at No. 46, with a rating of 0.19%, according to InfoWorld’s April 7, 2023 report. That was a popularity-index milestone—not proof that Zig had displaced C or achieved broad adoption. TIOBE’s later August 2026 edition listed Zig at No. 41 with a 0.43% rating, a separate monthly snapshot.

What Zig is—and why it is called a C rival

Zig is a general-purpose programming language and toolchain. Its official website describes it as intended for “maintaining robust, optimal and reusable software.” The project emphasizes explicit behavior and compile-time execution, and presents Zig as usable alongside existing C and C++ code.

That relationship helps explain the “C rival” label: Zig is positioned as a modern alternative for systems programming, while also offering ways to integrate it into C/C++ projects. The Zig project says it can be used as a C/C++ compiler and that developers can add Zig compilation units to existing projects. Its website also highlights no hidden control flow, no hidden memory allocations, and no preprocessor or macros. These are the project’s descriptions of its design and capabilities, not independent performance findings.

When Zig entered the TIOBE top 50

InfoWorld reported on April 7, 2023 that Zig had reached No. 46 in the April 2023 TIOBE index, with a 0.19% rating. It was Zig’s first reported appearance in the top 50.

TIOBE’s official index page, reviewed October 4, 2026, displays a later edition: August 2026. In that snapshot, Zig was No. 41 with a 0.43% rating. The two figures are monthly index results from different editions, not measurements of the number of Zig users.

What a TIOBE ranking measures

TIOBE calls its index “an indicator of the popularity of programming languages.” Its methodology describes signals associated with qualified engineers, courses, and third-party vendors across popular websites. TIOBE also cautions that the index is not a measure of the best language or of which language has the most lines of code. The ratings should therefore be read as index scores, not as a census of developers, projects, or software in production.

See TIOBE’s official index page for its methodology and dated monthly rankings.

Does this mean Zig is replacing C?

No. The top-50 entry shows that Zig registered enough popularity signals to appear in that TIOBE edition; the ranking does not establish that developers are abandoning C, that Zig is more technically capable, or that it has broad adoption. Zig’s stated interoperability and incremental-integration options make it possible to introduce Zig into a C/C++ codebase without treating the two languages as mutually exclusive. The index itself cannot show how often that happens.
