The headline suggests that the Nintendo 64’s technical past is already slowing voice acting in the Ocarina of Time remake. The available evidence does not show that. Nintendo’s own retrospective documents real memory and data constraints from the original game’s development, and September 2026 reporting describes voiced characters in revealed footage. No source available for this article connects the two. This piece separates what is confirmed, what is historical, and where the comparison stops working.
What Nintendo has confirmed about the remake
Nintendo has announced Ocarina of Time as a return for Nintendo Switch 2. Its current product page describes the game as a Switch 2 exclusive.
The official announcement also describes a microphone feature. Players can play, or simply hum, a learned ocarina melody within range of the Switch 2’s built-in microphone, and Link performs the song in the game. The announcement credits series producer Eiji Aonuma with presenting the gameplay. This is a gameplay interaction. It is not a statement about spoken dialogue, and it does not indicate how the game’s characters will be voiced.
What the September 2026 footage reporting describes
GamesRadar’s report, published September 8, 2026, describes revealed footage in which several characters speak: Zelda, Saria, Princess Ruto, Darunia and Ganondorf. According to the same report, Link remains silent. The report also states that the voice cast had not been announced at publication.
#1 Best Overall
- Store levels, characters, top scores and more with 256KB Memory Card
- 123 pages of memory
- Load, save, copy and delete game saves with ease
- Fully compatible with Nintendo 64 games with a save option
That makes this a dated account of specific footage. It does not establish that every scene in the finished game is voiced, that these five are the full set of voiced characters, or who is performing any role. If a cast announcement has come out since then, it is not reflected here.
The N64-era constraint Nintendo has described
The historical claim comes from Nintendo’s Iwata Asks retrospective on the original game. It covers development for the Nintendo 64 and the relationship between that work and the planned 64DD add-on. The interview discusses movement and data patterns, and the difficulty of fitting them into the console’s memory.
Rank #2
- Compatible with all N64 controllers that can be inserted into Controller Pak.
- Adequate capacity: 1MB of storage space. There are 256KB built into each switch. Just toggle the switch to transform 256KB of storage space. More convenient to manage your game records.

- Brand new N64 controller package, backed by a one-year warranty and friendly customer service
- Important Notice: Long-distance shipping may cause the pre-installed CR2032 to deplete. If you experience any warnings about data corruption or inability to save during use, please replace (model CR2032) for the best experience. Don't worry - we include a free spare CR2032 to cover all your needs.
This is a first-party account of design-time limits in the original. It is useful context, but it has a narrow scope.

- Memory limits shaped how the original’s movement and data were built.
- Development plans were tied to the 64DD, which affected the hardware context engineers were working within.
- Nintendo has publicly discussed these constraints as part of the game’s history.
What the retrospective does not support
- It does not say that N64 memory made voice acting impossible in the original.
- It does not say that those constraints affect voice work in a Switch 2 remake.
- It does not address voice acting in the form described in the 2026 footage reporting.
Comparing the two eras
The comparison works best when each axis is kept separate. The table below sets the original’s documented development context beside the remake’s confirmed details.

- It is there is film on the face.
- Comfortable to touch.
- Adopting imported materials to protect internal structure and strong heat dissipation.
- Precise card position, easy to disassemble, not easy to fall off.
- After cutting and special machine process, you no need to cut it any more.
| Axis | Original N64 development | Switch 2 remake |
|---|---|---|
| Target hardware | Nintendo 64, with the planned 64DD add-on in the development context | Nintendo Switch 2, listed as a Switch 2 exclusive |
| Constraint discussed | Fitting movement and data patterns into limited memory, per Nintendo’s retrospective | No technical limit on voice work is stated in the official materials; the announced feature is microphone-based melody play |
| Voice acting | Not discussed in the retrospective | Voiced dialogue for Zelda, Saria, Princess Ruto, Darunia and Ganondorf in footage reported September 8, 2026; Link silent |
| Storage capacity figures | Not stated in the available sources | Not stated in the available sources |
| Evidence type | First-party developer retrospective | Official announcement and product listing, plus press coverage of footage |
The storage row is blank on both sides because no reliable capacity figure was available for either system. Any claim that voice files would not fit, or would fit easily, would need a source that states those numbers.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What remains unsettled
- The full voice cast and the scope of voiced dialogue, beyond the characters named in September 2026 reporting.
- Whether Nintendo has made any statement about the remake’s voice production beyond the footage coverage.
- Any technical reason, from Nintendo or a credible hardware source, that would make voice work harder on Switch 2 than on the original.
Until one of these is answered by a primary source, the N64 history is best read as background on how the original was built, not as a current obstacle to the remake.
