Zone Constant Angular Velocity (ZCAV) describes a disk-recording arrangement in which the disk spins at a constant angular rate while data is organized into radial zones. In the common hard-drive explanation, outer tracks contain more sectors than inner tracks, so each revolution can carry more data past the read/write head at the outer edge.

How ZCAV works

A disk’s tracks have different circumferences: tracks nearer the outside are longer than tracks near the center. With constant angular velocity, the disk completes each revolution at the same rate. A zoned layout uses that extra outer-track length to store more sectors per track, rather than keeping the sector count the same at every radius.

As a result, sequential transfers can be faster on outer tracks because more recorded data passes beneath the head per revolution. This is a consequence of rotation and data layout, not a guaranteed speed rating for every drive. Actual transfer rates depend on the drive and workload, and seeks can reduce throughput by requiring the head to move between tracks.

How ZCAV differs from related recording methods

The terms describe what remains constant as the disk rotates or data is written. In particular, ZCAV and ZCLV are not interchangeable: the cited optical-disc patent distinguishes them by whether rotational speed changes at zone boundaries.

Method What stays constant What happens across zones or with radius
CAV (Constant Angular Velocity) Angular velocity In Microsoft’s optical-writing description, write speed increases as writing proceeds.
CLV (Constant Linear Velocity) Linear velocity Rotational speed varies with radius to maintain the linear speed.
ZCLV (Zone Constant Linear Velocity) Angular velocity within each zone Rotational speed changes at zone transitions, according to the cited patent.
ZCAV (Zone Constant Angular Velocity) Angular velocity In the common hard-drive explanation, zones have different sector counts, with more sectors on outer tracks.
PCAV (Partial Constant Angular Velocity) Angular velocity after a threshold is reached Microsoft describes write speed rising until a specified velocity is reached, then staying there for the rest of the disc-writing process.

Why the acronym can be confusing

ZCAV is commonly expanded as “Zone Constant Angular Velocity” in hard-drive zone-recording material and in a USPTO classification example. Optical-media terminology is less consistent: Microsoft Learn’s IWriteSpeedDescriptor::get_RotationTypeIsPureCAV documentation, last updated February 22, 2024, expands ZCAV as “Zone Constant Linear Velocity” and calls it “an impure form of CAV.” The same page says, “The disc is divided into zones. After each zone, the write speed increases.” Treat that expansion as Microsoft’s usage in that optical-media context, not as a universal definition.

The USPTO classification schedule lists ZCLV and ZCAV as examples of zoned data areas. That is a classification example, not evidence of a particular drive’s performance.

What ZCAV means for speed

For a hard drive using a zoned track layout, outer tracks can support higher sequential throughput than inner tracks because they hold more sectors per revolution. The exact difference is drive-specific; ZCAV itself does not establish a particular transfer rate or predict random-access performance.

For scale only, a Rice University thesis reports that one commodity hard drive it tested delivered sequential read speeds above 110 MB/s and sequential write speeds approaching 100 MB/s, sustained over at least the first third of that drive. Those are results for that particular test device, not general ZCAV benchmarks.
