For a Z97 Mini-ITX build, the main documented difference among these three LGA1150 boards is storage: ASRock lists six SATA3 ports plus SATA Express and M.2, MSI lists four SATA III ports, and Gigabyte lists six SATA 6 Gb/s ports. All three specify two DDR3 memory slots with a 16 GB maximum and onboard wireless. Because these are legacy boards, confirm CPU/BIOS compatibility, exact model and revision, and included accessories before buying used. The comparison below reflects manufacturer specifications, not hands-on testing.
At a glance: how the boards differ
| Specification | ASRock Z97E-ITX/ac | MSI Z97I AC | Gigabyte GA-Z97N-WIFI |
|---|---|---|---|
| Platform and form factor | Intel Z97, Socket 1150, Mini-ITX | Intel Z97, LGA1150, Mini-ITX | Intel Z97, LGA1150, Mini-ITX |
| Memory | 2 DDR3 DIMMs; up to 16 GB | 2 DDR3 DIMMs; up to 16 GB | 2 DDR3 DIMMs; up to 16 GB |
| Storage | 6 SATA3; SATA Express and M.2 listed, with shared lanes | 4 SATA III | 6 SATA 6 Gb/s |
| Wireless | Dual-band 802.11ac; Bluetooth 4.0 | Intel Dual Band Wireless-AC 7260 module; Bluetooth 4.0 | Dual-band 802.11ac; Bluetooth |

These are manufacturer-listed features, not independent verification of performance or reliability. The specifications are on the ASRock Z97E-ITX/ac page, MSI Z97I AC specification page, and Gigabyte GA-Z97N-WIFI rev. 1.1 page.
Which board has the storage connections you need?
ASRock Z97E-ITX/ac
ASRock specifies six SATA3 connections, SATA Express, and an M.2 interface. Those interfaces share lanes: according to ASRock’s specifications, using M.2 or SATA Express affects the SATA3_4 and SATA3_5 connectors. Check the manual and plan drives around that limitation rather than assuming every listed interface can be used simultaneously.
MSI Z97I AC
MSI specifies four SATA III ports. That is the lowest stated SATA count of the three, so compare it with the number and type of drives in your build before choosing this board.

Gigabyte GA-Z97N-WIFI
Gigabyte lists six SATA 6 Gb/s connectors for the rev. 1.1 specification page. Do not infer that a different hardware revision has identical documentation; match the revision printed on the physical board to its support page.
Wireless and wired networking
All three models list onboard wireless, but their specifications identify the hardware differently. ASRock lists dual-band 802.11ac and Bluetooth 4.0; MSI names an Intel Dual Band Wireless-AC 7260 module and Bluetooth 4.0; Gigabyte lists dual-band 802.11ac and Bluetooth. MSI and Gigabyte list up to 867 Mbps as a wireless link rate. That is a theoretical advertised rate, not measured throughput.
Rank #2
- Memory Support: 2 x DDR3 DIMM; MAX 16GB; Support for DDR3 1600/1333 MHz memory modules
- Onboard graphics: 1 x DVI-I port,2 x HDMI ports, Support for up to 3 displays at the same time
- LAN: 2 x Gbe LAN
For wired connections, ASRock lists Intel Gigabit LAN, MSI lists dual Realtek Gigabit LAN ports, and Gigabyte’s rev. 1.1 page lists Intel and Realtek Gigabit LAN. The MSI dual-port specification may matter if you have a specific wired-networking use for both ports; this comparison does not establish a performance advantage.
Memory and CPU compatibility
Each manufacturer specifies two DDR3 DIMM slots and a maximum of 16 GB. Verify a specific memory kit against the support list for the exact board; matching the DDR3 type and capacity alone does not confirm that a kit has been qualified.
Rank #3
- LGA 1150 Socket Motherboard: The Intel computer motherboard is designed with LGA1150 socket, support Intel 4th gen Core i7/i5/i3/E3 series processors. (e.g. core i5 4570, i5 4690k, i7 4790, i7 4790k, i3 4130, i5 4460, etc.)
- Maximum Memory 16GB: The mini itx motherboard supports Dual Channel Non-ECC DDR3 RAM, 2 DIMMs slots, the maximum memory capacity is 16GB (2*8GB). And support 1066/1333/1600/1866MHz
- Stable Power Supply: 4-phase power supply, all-solid-state capacitor design, fine workmanship, professional stability. And the LGA 1150 Mini ITX motherboard is equipped with 24+8 pin power interface (please use a brand power supply at least 500w)
- Ultimate Gaming Connectivity: The computer motherboard features HDMI-compatible, VGA and DP high-definition multimedia transmission Interfaces, 2 RJ45 gigabit network interfaces, and M. 2 slot (NVMe SSD), PCIe 3.0 X16, SATA 3.0, USB 3.0, USB 2.0
- High Performance Motherboard: The lga1150 DDR3 motherboard is equipped with H97 chipset. And with Heat dissipation armor protection for strong heat dissipation, to ensure stable bus communication
All three boards use Intel’s Z97 chipset and LGA1150 socket, but socket match alone does not prove that the installed BIOS supports a particular processor. Check the model-specific CPU support list and ask the seller which BIOS version is installed when support is uncertain. For Gigabyte, use the support documentation for the board’s exact revision.

- Read the exact model and revision from the board. In particular, Gigabyte has separate rev. 1.0 and rev. 1.1 specification pages. Start with the page for the exact revision: Gigabyte GA-Z97N-WIFI rev. 1.1 specifications.
- Confirm CPU and BIOS support. Compare the intended processor with the manufacturer’s support list and ask for BIOS details if the match is not clear.
- Check memory support. Confirm the DDR3 kit against the board-specific support list; each board specifies two slots and up to 16 GB.
- Ask what accessories are actually included. Confirm the wireless module, antenna or antennas, I/O shield, SATA cables, and mounting hardware. A feature in a product specification does not establish that a used listing includes detachable parts.
- Assess condition and purchase protection. Ask for evidence of testing and inspect the socket and PCB where possible. Consider return rights and current asking price; no particular listing or seller condition is established here.
Support status and the legacy-platform trade-off
ASRock states that technical and security-related support for the Z97E-ITX/ac ended in January 2022. The available specifications do not establish equivalent end dates for MSI or Gigabyte, so that date applies only to the ASRock model.
These boards are for an older LGA1150/DDR3 platform. The specifications help identify connectivity and compatibility questions, but they do not establish current stock, used-item condition, comparative performance, thermals, reliability, or value. No performance or value winner can be justified from these feature lists alone.
