Z-Wave Long Range (ZWLR) connects compatible devices directly to a central hub in a star, while classic Z-Wave uses a mesh in which messages can relay through other devices. That direct-link design can reach endpoints farther from a hub without relying on multi-hop routing—but the advertised maximum of about 1.5 miles is an ideal-condition, line-of-sight figure, not a typical indoor guarantee.
How Z-Wave Long Range differs from classic Z-Wave
The key difference is how messages travel. In classic Z-Wave, devices can relay messages across a mesh. ZWLR instead uses a star topology: each LR endpoint communicates directly with the hub or controller, and LR mode does not support multi-hop routing.
That makes the two modes useful for different layouts. A mesh can extend coverage through suitable relaying devices around obstacles or dead spots. A direct LR link can serve a distant endpoint without depending on intermediate nodes, but it relies on the link between that endpoint and the hub. The Z-Wave Alliance describes the modes as able to coexist, so a deployment can use each where it fits, if its equipment supports the design.

The Z-Wave Alliance says ZWLR has a maximum wireless range of 1.5 miles at full power. In a January 2026 announcement, it characterized about 1.5 miles as a line-of-sight distance under ideal conditions. Treat that as a maximum capability, not a promise for a house, office, or obstructed installation. Walls, hub placement, and real link conditions affect whether a device can maintain a direct connection. The sources cited here do not establish typical range across ordinary buildings.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Certification benchmarks are a separate measure: in January 2025, the Alliance added a 700 m benchmark option for LR devices and said verified ranges could be included in its product catalog. A benchmark option should not be confused with either the 1.5-mile maximum claim or a guaranteed result in a particular building.
Capacity and technical differences
Node limits depend on whether the figure describes the standard or a specific implementation. Silicon Labs’ versioned v7.24.3 comparison lists 232 nodes for classic Z-Wave and a standard maximum of 4,000 for LR, while stating that its own implementation supports up to 1,024 LR nodes. The standard maximum therefore should not be assumed for every controller or chipset.

What equipment and regional support you need
Both ends of the link must support LR: the hub or controller and the endpoint. An LR-capable device alone cannot make a non-LR hub support the mode. For example, the Alliance catalog lists the Zooz S2 On/Off Toggle Switch, model ZEN73 800LR, as LR-capable for the US/CA/MX region and notes that LR operation requires a compatible hub.

- Sleek 7-in-1 USB-C Hub: Features an HDMI port, two USB-A 3.0 ports, and a USB-C data port, each providing 5Gbps transfer speeds. It also includes a USB-C PD input port for charging up to 100W and dual SD and TF card slots, all in a compact design.
- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)
- Double Up on Efficiency: The two USB-A 3.0 ports and a USB-C port support a fast 5Gbps data rate, significantly boosting your transfer speeds and improving productivity.

Region and frequency plan matter, too. Silicon Labs’ overview describes LR as available for the US market and says Europe and APAC support was under evaluation. Separately, the Alliance announced on May 6, 2025, that certification had been updated to support EU Long Range frequency verification, allowing product owners to submit devices for EU LR verification. Certification support is not proof of broad retail availability in every country. Check the product’s certified listing and regional frequency plan before choosing equipment.
The Alliance later reported that certification was updated for the 2026A specification package on June 30, 2026. Requirements and listed products can change, so consult the current catalog for model-specific status.

When a hybrid mesh-and-LR setup makes sense
- Use mesh for areas where relay-capable devices can provide useful intermediate hops or help cover local dead spots.
- Consider LR for endpoints that need a direct link to the hub from farther away, rather than relying on a chain of relays.
- Confirm that both the controller and the endpoint support LR in the intended region and that the deployment’s design supports the chosen mode.
Neither topology is automatically better in every building. A direct link depends on conditions between hub and endpoint; a mesh depends on suitable relay paths. The Alliance’s January 5, 2026 announcement counted 125 Z-Wave Long Range certified devices in the market at that time. That is a dated Alliance figure, not a live inventory total.
