Yuzvendra Chahal has retired from first-class cricket, effective immediately, but has not announced an end to his playing career. In his 2 October 2026 announcement, the India leg-spinner said he still hopes to earn another opportunity in One-Day and T20 cricket. That is his stated ambition, not a confirmation that India will select him.
What Chahal announced
Chahal said he was stepping away from first-class cricket after a career of 49 matches. Hindustan Times reported that he made the announcement on Instagram and quoted him saying his final first-class match was for Northamptonshire against Middlesex at Lord’s. The reports do not establish the date of that match.

He framed the decision as the end of his red-ball chapter, not the end of all cricket. “The hunger to play for my country is still very much alive,” he said in the statement reproduced by Hindustan Times. He added that he would give everything to earn another opportunity in the One-Day and T20 formats.
His first-class record
Hindustan Times reported that Chahal took 148 wickets in 49 first-class matches, with an average of 32.27 and best innings figures of 6/25. India Today also reported the 49-match, 148-wicket totals. Chahal made his first-class debut for Haryana in 2009, according to The Times of India.

A Test cap remained a dream
Chahal said playing Test cricket for India had long been a dream. He did not win a Test cap, according to the same-day reports, but said he was content with the journey he had in first-class cricket. Retirement from the format closes that chapter; it does not change the fact that his stated goal now is a chance in limited-overs international cricket.
