A sponsorship offer can look personal and professional yet still be a phishing attempt. In a campaign reported by ESET on October 7, 2026, attackers approached YouTubers with tailored brand-deal pitches, directed them to convincing fake collaboration sites, and then asked them to sign in to Google to “verify” channel ownership. Confirm offers through contact details you find independently, never enter a Google password on a third-party site, and act quickly if you already shared credentials or a verification code.
How the fake sponsorship scam works
ESET reported a sequence that can begin with an email referencing a creator’s videos. The sender may negotiate rates before directing the creator to a polished collaboration site. The reported sites used brand logos and presented features such as campaign metrics, contracts, payment tools, earnings calculators, and a request for the creator’s public channel URL. These details can make a page feel tailored and legitimate, but they do not establish that the offer is real. ESET’s October 7, 2026 report describes the campaign.
The page then asks the creator to sign in with Google, framing the request as channel ownership verification. The danger is that an imitation Google sign-in page can capture a password and one-time verification code. ESET says that stolen credentials can expose the broader Google account, including Gmail, Drive, and recovery settings—not just the YouTube channel.

A genuine Google sign-in and a request to grant an app access are not the same thing. Signing in can share limited profile information by default; separate permissions may grant a service additional access, such as managing a YouTube channel. Review any permissions screen carefully. A claim that a site needs to verify ownership does not, by itself, justify channel-management access. ESET’s explanation of the sign-in and permission risks discusses this distinction.

Brand names and site features can change
ESET documented impersonations involving Hollyland, Nike, and Spotify, and reported fake platform names including MATCHY and SCOUTY. The researchers describe the operation as modular: some site components and functionality may stay similar while the impersonated brand, name, or domain changes. Treat those names as examples, not a complete blocklist. A site not using one of them is not necessarily safe.
If attackers gain access, they may change account recovery details and lock the creator out. They may also misuse the creator’s identity or channel to reach followers and collaborators.

How to check whether a YouTube sponsorship offer is real
- Verify with the brand independently. Find the company’s official website yourself and use contact information published there to ask whether the offer and sender are genuine. Do not use a phone number, email address, or link supplied only in the unsolicited pitch. The YouTube Help guidance on phishing and suspicious messages recommends caution with unsolicited links and files.
- Inspect the exact domains. Check the sender’s full email domain and the collaboration platform’s web address. A familiar logo, polished design, testimonials, or a plausible company number is not proof. Compare the domains with information you obtained independently from the brand.
- Check where the sign-in happens. If the pitch asks you to sign in with Google, make sure the address bar shows Google’s own domain. ESET gives
accounts.google.comas an example of a genuine Google sign-in address; YouTube says not to enter a Google password on any site other thanmyaccount.google.com. Do not follow a sign-in link from a suspicious pitch; navigate to Google yourself. - Read requested permissions before approving. Ask what access the service is requesting and whether it is necessary. Do not authorize an unfamiliar service, particularly one asking to manage your channel when the stated purpose is only ownership verification. YouTube’s channel permissions guidance explains how to give collaborators channel access without sharing a Google Account password.
- Do not open untrusted links or files. YouTube says it will never ask for a password or account information by email, message, or phone call. It recommends scanning downloads and enabling Enhanced Safe Browsing; encrypted files can be harder for antivirus tools to scan.
- Protect the account you use for your channel. Use a strong, unique password and enable 2-Step Verification. YouTube recommends a passkey as the second verification method for stronger phishing protection. A physical FIDO2 security key is another authentication option, but no one method makes it safe to enter credentials on a fake site.
What to do if you entered your Google password or a code
Act promptly, and do not return to the suspicious site to enter credentials again or approve more access. Use Google’s official account tools and navigate to them directly rather than following links in the pitch.

- Open Google Security Checkup. Review recent security events, signed-in devices, recovery information, and third-party connections. Remove unfamiliar devices or app access and correct recovery details that you do not recognize.
- Change your Google password. Use a new, unique password. If you reused the old one elsewhere, change it on those accounts as well, using their official sites.
- Enable two-factor authentication if it is not active. Review the methods on the account and remove any you did not add. Do not share future verification codes with a person or enter them on a site reached from the suspicious pitch.
- If you are locked out, use Google Account Recovery. If recovery information was changed or you cannot sign in, follow Google’s official recovery process rather than trusting anyone offering to restore the account for you.
- Check and recover the YouTube channel. Use YouTube’s hacked-channel recovery resource. After regaining access, undo unauthorized changes and remove unknown app or device access.
- Consider reporting the incident. The FBI’s October 2024 advisory directs victims of account takeover and internet scams to the Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3). That advisory concerns account takeovers broadly; it does not provide a victim count for ESET’s October 2026 campaign. Read the FBI advisory.
How this differs from an older YouTube creator scam
Google’s Threat Analysis Group described a separate campaign on October 20, 2021, in which fake collaboration offers led creators to malware disguised as software. The malware stole browser cookies, enabling session hijacking. Google said compromised channels were later sold or used for cryptocurrency scam livestreams. That operation is distinct from the fake Google sign-in and channel-verification approach ESET reported in 2026.

For the 2021 campaign, Google reported these response figures. They describe Google’s work against that earlier operation, not victims or prevalence in the 2026 campaign:
| Google-reported response metric | Figure |
|---|---|
| Messages blocked | 1.6 million — Google Threat Analysis Group, 2021 |
| Safe Browsing phishing-page warnings displayed | Approximately 62,000 — Google Threat Analysis Group, 2021 |
| Files blocked | 2,400 — Google Threat Analysis Group, 2021 |
| Accounts restored | Approximately 4,000 — Google Threat Analysis Group, 2021 |
| Decrease in related Gmail phishing-email volume since May 2021 | 99.6% — Google Threat Analysis Group, 2021 |
| Domains created solely for the earlier malware campaign | At least 1,011 — Google Threat Analysis Group, 2021 |
Google’s Threat Analysis Group report provides the historical figures. ESET’s October 2026 report does not give a reliable aggregate victim count or prevalence estimate for the newer campaign, so the 2021 metrics should not be used as a measure of its reach.
