If YouTube suddenly shows only two or three very large videos per row, you probably did not enable a hidden thumbnail setting. The original April 2025 reports matched a YouTube interface experiment or gradual rollout, and YouTube does not currently document a native control for choosing the number of Home-page thumbnails per row. You can confirm whether the change is account-, browser-, or extension-specific, then use browser zoom for a quick workaround or a layout extension for a more targeted fix.
The best first step is to press Ctrl+0 on Windows/Linux or Command+0 on macOS, test YouTube in a private window, and compare another account if possible. If the layout still appears oversized, use the instructions below.
First, identify which YouTube screen changed
“Big YouTube thumbnails” can describe several different interfaces. The fix depends on where you see them:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors| Where the thumbnails are large | What it probably is | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| Home, with videos arranged in rows | A YouTube grid experiment, rollout, responsive-layout change, browser zoom issue, or extension conflict | Reset zoom, test another account or browser, then use a grid extension if necessary |
| Subscriptions, with fewer cards per row | Often related to the desktop grid layout, although individual tools may treat Home and Subscriptions separately | Use a grid-count setting in a compatible extension |
| Search results | A separate search thumbnail-size layout | Look for a search-specific setting in your layout extension |
| Beside the video on the watch page | A related-video sidebar change, not the Home grid | Use a sidebar or related-video setting, if your extension provides one |
| Home in the mobile app | An app-specific responsive layout or experiment | Send feedback; desktop browser extensions will not modify the official app |
| TV or console app | A television-oriented YouTube interface | Desktop zoom and browser extensions do not apply |
What happened in the original “thumbnails too big” incident?
The Reddit question behind this topic was posted on April 15, 2025. Users described YouTube Home changing suddenly from a denser grid to one showing roughly two or three large cards per row, depending on the display, resolution, browser window width, and zoom level. Some reports also mentioned similar behavior on Subscriptions.

- A BETTER READING EXPERIENCE: For busy office workers, EasyRead mode provides a more paper-like experience for when viewing lengthy documents
The visible effects were straightforward:
- Each video card occupied more horizontal space.
- Fewer videos fit on a row.
- Less of the next row was visible before scrolling.
- Zooming out could bring back more cards, but it also made titles, controls, icons, and other page content smaller.
The available evidence pointed to a YouTube-side experiment or rollout rather than a normal viewer preference. The change did not mean that creators had re-uploaded larger thumbnail files, or that the thumbnail images themselves had been permanently altered. It was primarily a change in how YouTube rendered the homepage grid in the affected account or browser.
YouTube’s own explanation of experiments and gradual rollouts confirms that different accounts can receive different interfaces. That makes an account-specific change plausible, but it does not prove that every oversized grid is the same A/B test. Later reports describe other large-thumbnail changes on desktop and mobile.
Is it a setting, a bug, or a YouTube experiment?
There are five realistic possibilities:
- Browser page zoom: Everything on YouTube is scaled up or down, not just the video grid.
- YouTube experiment or rollout: YouTube changes the interface for some accounts, devices, or groups of users.
- Browser-extension or user-style conflict: A content blocker, custom CSS style, or YouTube enhancement tool changes the page.
- Responsive layout: YouTube calculates card sizes from the available window width, display resolution, and its minimum card width.
- Rendering bug: Cards are misplaced, stretched, square, badly cropped, or otherwise malformed rather than merely larger.
For the original 2025 Home-page complaint, a YouTube experiment or rollout was the most likely explanation. However, do not assume every later report is the same issue. A cropped or square thumbnail, for example, may be a separate rendering or presentation experiment.
Quick wins for a faster PC:

- Open YouTube Home in the affected browser.
- Reset the browser’s page zoom with Ctrl+0 on Windows/Linux or Command+0 on macOS.
- Resize the browser window. A narrow window can legitimately produce fewer columns.
- Open YouTube in a private or incognito window. This is a quick way to test without most extensions and with a fresh session.
- If practical, test while signed out or with another Google account.
- Temporarily disable YouTube layout extensions, userstyles, and content blockers one at a time.
- Compare Home with Subscriptions, Search, and a video watch page.
How to interpret the result
- Only one account is affected: An account-targeted experiment or rollout is plausible. This is an inference from YouTube’s explanation of account differences, not a public diagnostic rule.
- Every account and browser is affected: A broader YouTube rollout is more likely.
- Only one browser is affected: Check saved site zoom, extensions, cached site state, and browser-specific compatibility first.
- Only one window size is affected: YouTube’s responsive grid may be reaching a minimum card width.
- Home is affected but the sidebar is not, or vice versa: Treat them as separate layouts.
- Cards are cropped, square, stretched, or misplaced: You may be seeing a different rendering experiment or a genuine browser/extension problem.
Fastest fix: zoom out the YouTube page
Browser zoom is the quickest option because it requires no installation. It can also change the responsive grid so more cards fit on each row.
Chrome
- Windows/Linux: press Ctrl+- to zoom out.
- macOS: press Command+-.
- Reset to normal: press Ctrl+0 or Command+0.
- Alternatively, open the Chrome menu and use the Zoom controls.
Chrome can remember a separate zoom level for an individual website. If YouTube always opens smaller or larger than other sites, check YouTube’s saved site zoom in Chrome’s site settings. Google’s Chrome zoom instructions explain the current controls.
Edge
On Windows, use Ctrl+- to zoom out and Ctrl+0 to reset. On macOS, use the corresponding Command shortcuts. Microsoft documents these controls in its Edge accessibility and zoom guidance.
Firefox
Use Ctrl+- or Command+- to zoom out, and Ctrl+0 or Command+0 to reset. See Mozilla’s Firefox accessibility and zoom instructions.
The important drawback
Zoom is a blunt workaround. It makes the thumbnails smaller, but it also makes the entire YouTube page smaller: titles, menus, icons, captions, buttons, player controls, and text. Very low zoom may restore a five- or six-column grid while making the page uncomfortable to read. It may also produce a different layout from the older YouTube design rather than exactly restoring it.
Use zoom when you need an immediate, reversible change. If you want larger text and independently narrower video cards, use a grid-specific extension instead.
Best targeted fix for Chrome and Chromium browsers
Browser stores and extensions change over time, so install only from the official store, check the publisher, read the requested permissions, and confirm that the tool is compatible with your browser. Use one layout-modifying extension at a time.

Option 1: Control Panel for YouTube
Control Panel for YouTube is the most flexible choice when you want to control several YouTube surfaces. Its current Chrome listing includes a Minimum grid items per row option for desktop Home and Subscriptions, as well as search thumbnail controls and options for hiding Shorts and other sections.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The Chrome listing showed version 1.35.2, updated in July 2026, when checked for this guide. Versions and features can change.
Set the minimum number of cards per row
- Install Control Panel for YouTube from the official browser store.
- Open YouTube and open your browser’s Extensions menu.
- Open the extension’s options or settings page.
- Find the Video lists section.
- Find Minimum grid items per row.
- Change it from Auto to the number you prefer.
- Refresh YouTube Home and, if needed, Subscriptions.
This is not simply a “make thumbnails smaller” command. By setting a minimum number of grid items, the extension encourages narrower cards so more videos fit across the available width. Start with one additional card per row rather than choosing the highest possible number; a dense grid can make titles and artwork difficult to read.
The extension can modify more than the Home grid if you enable additional options. It also needs permission to modify YouTube pages. That permission is expected for a tool that changes the site, but install it only from a trusted, official listing and remove it if you stop using it.
Option 2: YouTube Row Fixer
YouTube Row Fixer is a narrower alternative intended to customize how many items appear in a row. Its listing includes controls for:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Videos per row.
- Posts per row.
- Shorts per row.
- Automatic row counts based on screen size.
- Channel-profile visibility and full-title display.
The Chrome listing showed version 1.1.8, updated April 13, 2026, with 100,000 users at the time checked. Its store disclosure says that the developer does not collect or use user data; that is the developer’s listing statement, not an independent privacy or security audit.
- Install YouTube Row Fixer from the Chrome Web Store.
- Open its toolbar popup.
- Set the desired video count per row.
- Refresh YouTube if the grid does not update immediately.
The project’s GitHub repository identifies it as an extension for customizing videos, posts, and Shorts per row. Its repository described Firefox support as “coming soon,” so do not assume this Chrome extension works in Firefox just because Firefox can run some Chromium extensions.
Firefox: use a Firefox-specific layout tool
YouTube Tweaks
YouTube Tweaks is the strongest Firefox-oriented option identified for this problem. Its Mozilla Add-ons listing includes controls for changing the number of videos per row and thumbnail size, along with options such as reducing font size and hiding profile pictures, Shorts, and other sections.
The listing showed version 2026.7.31, updated July 31, 2026, and says the project is also available for Chrome, Brave, Opera, and Edge. It requires access to YouTube pages because it modifies the site.
- Install YouTube Tweaks from Mozilla Add-ons.
- Open its options page from Firefox’s Extensions menu.
- Find the video-grid or thumbnail-layout controls.
- Reduce thumbnail size or increase the number of videos per row.
- Reload YouTube Home.
Older alternatives
YouTube Homepage Thumbnail Resizer specifically targets the homepage grid, but its listing was last updated on May 9, 2025. It may be useful if YouTube Tweaks does not suit you, but it is a less attractive first recommendation for a changing YouTube interface.

YT-XL offers three to ten thumbnails per row and says it operates locally. Its listing showed lower adoption and an older update date, so treat it as an alternative rather than the default choice.
Safari: use Safari-compatible tools or site zoom
Do not install a Chrome extension expecting it to modify Safari. A Control Panel for YouTube app and extension listing exists in Apple’s App Store ecosystem, but support can depend on the Safari version, macOS or iOS device, and how the companion app and extension are configured.
- Confirm that the extension supports your Safari version and device.
- Enable it in Safari’s extension settings.
- Open its YouTube grid or thumbnail-size options.
- If no compatible extension is available, use Safari’s per-site page zoom.
Safari can remember page-zoom settings for a particular website. Apple’s Safari page-zoom guide explains how to adjust and save the setting.
Does YouTube have a built-in setting?
Not one that YouTube currently documents for this purpose. YouTube has not documented a native viewer control that lets you choose four, five, or another specific number of homepage thumbnails per row, or independently resize the Home cards while leaving the rest of the page unchanged.
That is more precise than saying YouTube has “no settings.” YouTube has many player, playback, account, and appearance controls, and it can add or remove interface options later. As of the information checked for this guide, there is no documented per-row Home-grid control. The practical choices are therefore the current YouTube layout, browser zoom, a compatible extension, or feedback to YouTube.
Do not confuse the Home grid with other large-thumbnail changes
Watch-page recommendations
Reports in 2026 described a separate desktop test in which recommended videos in the right-hand sidebar became substantially larger or moved into a different arrangement. See the reported sidebar-thumbnail test. A Home-grid setting may not affect this area. If your problem is only the recommendations beside the player, look for a related-video or sidebar-thumbnail control in your extension, if one exists.
Search results
Search has its own result layout and may have separate thumbnail-size controls in an extension. Changing the Home grid does not guarantee that Search will change.

Mobile Home
In April 2026, TeamYouTube described a limited Android and iOS Home-feed experiment that automatically varied video and thumbnail sizes. Some thumbnails could appear cropped, but YouTube said the original uploaded files were not being edited. The details are in the YouTube test-features discussion.
This means a mobile card that looks cropped is not necessarily a corrupted upload. Do not use desktop browser extensions as a fix for the official YouTube mobile app, and do not assume that clearing the app cache or reinstalling it will remove an account- or server-side experiment. Send feedback with a screenshot if the mobile layout is difficult to use.
TV and console interfaces
The YouTube TV and console applications use separate interfaces. Desktop page zoom and browser extensions do not control their card layouts. Look for display or accessibility options on the device itself, or report the issue through the app if no layout control is provided.

What to do when zoom or an extension does not work
Zoom changes nothing
- Press Ctrl+0 or Command+0 to clear an unexpected saved zoom level.
- Check whether the browser has a separate saved zoom setting for YouTube.
- Make the browser window wider.
- Test in a private or incognito window.
- Disable userstyles, content blockers, and YouTube customization extensions.
- Confirm that you are changing Home rather than the watch-page sidebar.
- If the grid still has too few columns, use a dedicated grid extension.
The extension works on Home but not Subscriptions
Extensions can treat Home, Subscriptions, Search, channel pages, Shorts, and the watch-page sidebar as separate surfaces. Control Panel for YouTube specifically lists its minimum-grid option for desktop Home and Subscriptions, but verify the behavior of the installed version rather than assuming every option applies everywhere.

The extension works briefly, then stops
YouTube regularly changes its page structure. Extensions that modify CSS variables or page elements can break when the site changes, and may need an update. Check the store listing for a newer version, update the extension, and reload YouTube. Do not regard any extension as a permanent restoration of a specific 2024 or 2025 layout.
Several extensions conflict
Two YouTube layout tools may overwrite the same styles or page elements. Disable all but one layout modifier, reload YouTube, and add other tools back only if necessary. This also makes it much easier to identify which extension caused the problem.
The new grid is too dense
More cards per row are not automatically better. Five or six columns may improve scanning on a large monitor but make titles and thumbnails harder to read, especially on a high-DPI display. Try one additional card per row first, or keep a larger layout if it improves readability. A browser-zoom change is useful when you want to scale the whole interface; a grid extension is better when you want to separate card density from text size.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Report the change to YouTube
If the layout appears to be an experiment, affects only your account, or remains unusable after troubleshooting, report it through YouTube’s official feedback tool:
- Sign in to YouTube.
- Select your profile picture.
- Select Send feedback.
- Describe what changed.
- Choose whether to include a screenshot.
- Select Send.
YouTube says feedback goes directly to the company and that screenshots and account-specific information can help diagnose problems, although you should not expect a response to every report. Include:
- Your device and operating system.
- Browser name and version, if using a desktop browser.
- The affected page: Home, Subscriptions, Search, watch-page sidebar, mobile Home, or TV.
- The number of thumbnails currently appearing per row.
- Your browser zoom percentage.
- Whether it also happens signed out or in a private window.
- A screenshot showing the full browser window.
- Whether YouTube layout extensions or userstyles are installed.
- The exact date you first noticed the change.
That information helps distinguish a service-wide redesign from an account experiment, responsive behavior, an extension conflict, or a rendering fault.
One more clarification: this is not a creator thumbnail-upload problem
Creators can optimize uploaded thumbnails for YouTube’s recommended dimensions and different presentation surfaces, as described in YouTube’s thumbnail specification guidance and thumbnail and title guidance. Those recommendations do not give a viewer control over the number of Home cards per row.
If every video card on your Home page is larger, the issue is almost certainly the viewer-side rendered grid. Changing the source file, downloading a different thumbnail, or asking a creator to re-upload it will not restore a denser homepage layout.
Can you restore the exact old YouTube layout?
Usually, no permanent exact restoration can be guaranteed. YouTube controls server-side experiments and rollouts, and extensions depend on the current structure of the site. You can approximate the old density with zoom or a row-count extension, but the card widths, spacing, typography, Shorts placement, and other details may still differ.

Frequently Asked Questions
Did I accidentally change a YouTube setting?
Probably not. Reset your browser zoom first, but the original April 2025 oversized Home-grid reports were consistent with a YouTube experiment or rollout. YouTube does not currently document a native setting for choosing the number of Home thumbnails per row.
Can I choose four or five videos per row without shrinking the whole page?
Yes, on supported desktop browsers you can use a layout extension. Control Panel for YouTube has a “Minimum grid items per row” setting, while YouTube Row Fixer provides a videos-per-row control in Chrome. These tools can stop working after YouTube interface changes.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWill changing the Home grid also fix giant thumbnails beside videos?
Not necessarily. The watch-page recommendation sidebar is a separate layout from the Home grid and was the subject of separate 2026 reports. Use a related-video or sidebar-specific setting if your extension offers one.
Does this fix work in the YouTube mobile app?
No desktop browser extension can directly modify the official mobile app. Large or cropped mobile cards may be part of a separate Android or iOS experiment. Send feedback from the affected account and include a screenshot.
Why are my thumbnails cropped rather than merely large?
Cropping can indicate a separate presentation or rendering experiment. TeamYouTube said in 2026 that some mobile test thumbnails could appear cropped while the original uploaded files were not changed.
Will an extension keep working after YouTube updates?
There is no guarantee. Extensions modify YouTube’s changing page structure and may require updates. Check the official store for a newer release, and avoid running multiple layout extensions at once.
Is browser zoom permanent?
Browsers can remember a site-specific zoom level, so YouTube may reopen at that setting. Use the browser’s YouTube site settings or press Ctrl+0/Command+0 to return to 100 percent.
Are YouTube’s uploaded thumbnails being changed?
Usually not. The oversized Home complaint concerns how YouTube renders cards in the viewer’s interface. A creator’s uploaded thumbnail file is not normally altered merely because it appears larger or more cropped on your screen.
How do I report the layout change to YouTube?
Sign in, select your profile picture, choose “Send feedback,” describe the affected page and card count, optionally attach a screenshot, and select “Send.” Include your browser, device, zoom level, account/private-window test results, extensions, and the date the issue began.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: The original April 2025 “YouTube thumbnails too big” problem was most likely a YouTube-side experiment or rollout, not a hidden viewer preference. Reset zoom and test a private window first. Use page zoom for the fastest temporary change, or a compatible grid extension when you want to increase the number of cards without shrinking every control on the page. Treat Home, Search, the watch-page sidebar, mobile, and TV as separate interfaces, and report persistent or account-specific changes through YouTube’s Send feedback tool.
