For a standard YouTube video, create a 16:9 thumbnail at 3840 × 2160 pixels. YouTube’s current recommendation is 3840 × 2160, with a minimum width of 640 pixels. The familiar 1280 × 720 size is a legacy 16:9 working size still repeated by many guides, not YouTube’s current recommended resolution. Shorts use a vertical 9:16 canvas at 2160 × 3840 pixels.
YouTube thumbnail dimensions at a glance
| Content or surface | Recommended canvas | Aspect ratio | Minimum stated by YouTube |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard videos | 3840 × 2160 px | 16:9 | 640 px minimum width |
| YouTube Shorts | 2160 × 3840 px | 9:16 | 640 px minimum height |
| Podcast playlists | Square artwork; pixel recommendation not stated here | 1:1 | Not stated |
JPG and PNG are suitable upload formats. The dimensions above describe the canvas you export, not the size at which YouTube may display or crop it on every device.

Why 1280 × 720 is still quoted
1280 × 720 has been the standard advice for years because it is 16:9 and produces a relatively small file. Many creator tutorials and template tools continue to use it. YouTube’s newer Help guidance, however, recommends 3840 × 2160 for videos. Both canvases share the same shape, so a 1280 × 720 file can still be 16:9, but it is not the current recommended resolution.

If you are creating a new template, use 3840 × 2160 and scale your text and graphics from that master. If an existing workflow is locked to 1280 × 720, it preserves the correct ratio; export a higher-resolution master when your editor and upload workflow support it.

Pick the correct canvas for each YouTube format
Standard videos: 16:9 landscape
Use a 3840 × 2160 landscape canvas for regular videos. Keep the main subject, title and any essential numbers away from the outer edges so the design remains readable when the image is shown smaller. A 16:9 composition also matches the shape YouTube recommends for video thumbnails.
Shorts: 9:16 portrait
Shorts have a separate vertical recommendation: 2160 × 3840 pixels at 9:16. Do not simply place a 16:9 thumbnail on a portrait canvas and assume every important element will survive. Create a dedicated vertical layout with larger type and a different subject placement.
Podcast playlists: 1:1 square
Podcast playlists use a square 1:1 thumbnail rather than the 16:9 video canvas. The supplied YouTube specification does not state a pixel recommendation for this artwork, so use a square preset in your design tool and confirm any current limit shown in the upload interface.

YouTube lists JPG and PNG as suitable formats. The permitted file size depends on both the content type and where you upload it:
| Upload context | File-size limit |
|---|---|
| Video thumbnail uploaded on mobile | 2 MB |
| Podcast thumbnail uploaded on mobile | 10 MB |
| Video, Shorts or podcast thumbnail uploaded on desktop | 50 MB |
These are upload ceilings, not quality targets. A 3840 × 2160 PNG with photographic content can exceed a mobile limit, while a JPG at the same dimensions may be much smaller. Export the required dimensions first, then check the actual file size before uploading. If a mobile upload is rejected for size, export a carefully compressed JPG or use the desktop limit where that fits your workflow.
How to create and upload a thumbnail
- Choose the preset. Start with 3840 × 2160 for a standard video, 2160 × 3840 for a Short, or a 1:1 square preset for a podcast playlist.
- Build the composition at full size. Use one clear focal subject, high-contrast type and enough padding that important information is not clipped when the thumbnail is displayed smaller.
- Keep variants separate. Maintain a landscape video file and a portrait Shorts file instead of forcing one design to serve both ratios.
- Export as JPG or PNG. Use PNG when you need lossless edges or transparency in your design workflow; use JPG when reducing a photographic file to meet a mobile limit. Confirm the exported pixel dimensions in your editor or image properties.
- Check the file-size ceiling. For mobile video uploads, stay at or below 2 MB; for mobile podcast uploads, stay at or below 10 MB; desktop video, Shorts and podcast uploads allow up to 50 MB.
- Upload in YouTube Studio. Open Content, select the video or Short, open the thumbnail editing control, choose Upload file, select the exported image, and save. Labels can vary slightly by account or device.
- Verify eligibility. Custom-thumbnail uploads require the channel’s required verification and must comply with YouTube’s thumbnail policies. If the upload control is missing, check the verification and feature-eligibility status for the channel rather than changing the image dimensions.
Design checks that prevent common failures
- Readability at small size: view the image as a small preview. If the title cannot be read there, increasing the canvas alone will not solve the problem.
- Contrast: separate foreground text from the background with color, spacing or a restrained outline. Avoid placing essential words over detailed areas.
- Safe margins: leave breathing room around faces, logos and text. Edge-to-edge placement is more vulnerable to cropping in different surfaces.
- One message: make the subject and the promise of the video obvious without filling the canvas with paragraphs.
- Separate orientation: check that a Shorts design is genuinely portrait and that a standard-video design is genuinely landscape before export.
How YouTube may display a vertical-video thumbnail
For vertical videos, YouTube may replace a 16:9 custom thumbnail with an automatically generated 4:5 image on Home, Explore and Subscriptions. The custom image can still appear in the watch feed, watch history and on non-mobile platforms. This is a surface-specific behavior, so preview a vertical upload in the places that matter to your audience and keep the key subject near the center of the portrait design.
Troubleshooting thumbnail problems
The upload says the file is too large
First identify where the upload is happening. A mobile video thumbnail has a 2 MB limit, while a desktop video upload allows up to 50 MB. Re-export the same canvas as an optimized JPG, remove unnecessary metadata, or move the upload to desktop if that is practical. Do not reduce the pixel dimensions below the required canvas without understanding the quality trade-off.

Check the pixel dimensions, not just the filename. Standard videos should be 3840 × 2160 at 16:9; Shorts should be 2160 × 3840 at 9:16; podcast playlists use 1:1. Reopen the source document and export a new file from the appropriate preset.
The thumbnail looks soft
A file below YouTube’s current 3840 × 2160 video recommendation contains less source detail for large displays and later resizing. Rebuild or upscale the design in a 3840 × 2160 document, then export again. Upscaling a small, already-compressed image may not restore lost detail.
The custom-thumbnail option is unavailable
Dimensions do not enable the feature by themselves. Custom uploads require verification and policy compliance. Check the channel’s verification or feature-eligibility status in YouTube before troubleshooting the image.
Important content is missing on Home or Subscriptions
This is most likely the vertical-video 4:5 fallback. YouTube can substitute an auto-generated 4:5 image on those mobile surfaces even when a custom 9:16 thumbnail was uploaded. Keep the central subject and essential wording inside a conservative central area, and review the watch feed and other platforms separately.

If you need to inspect how a published video page or thumbnail appears at a particular viewport, ScreenshotNeo can capture the page through one GET request. It is a screenshot API and MCP server, not a thumbnail editor: you still create the image in your design tool, then use a capture to check the rendered result.
See the parameter reference in the ScreenshotNeo documentation. A basic capture looks like this:
cURL
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://youtube.com -o shot.webp
Python
import requests
r = requests.get("https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot", params={"access_key": "YOUR_API_KEY", "url": "https://youtube.com"}, timeout=90)
open("shot.webp", "wb").write(r.content)
Node.js
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://youtube.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie and consent banners like a visitor, then removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be disabled. Bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed. Response headers identify the result with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed.
For repeatable checks, you can set a viewport or one of 12 device presets, use retina scale, wait for a selector, delay or network idle, hide selectors, add custom CSS or JavaScript, set headers, cookies, user-agent, authorization, timezone or geolocation, and choose PNG, JPEG or WebP output. Other available controls include full-page capture with lazy images loaded, CSS-element capture, dark mode, PDF output, transparent backgrounds, resizing, a chosen cache TTL, signed links, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, bulk capture for up to 100 URLs per call, a usage API and an OpenAPI specification. Existing parameter names used by other screenshot APIs also work, which can simplify migration.
The free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card. Paid plans are Starter at $5 for 3,000 shots, Growth at $15 for 15,000, Pro at $39 for 60,000, Scale at $99 for 250,000 and Business at $249 for 1,000,000; yearly billing provides two months free, and every feature is available on every plan. An MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients.
