There is no universal winner between YouTube Shorts and TikTok. Choose based on where your intended viewers already engage, the length and originality of your videos, the monetization routes you may qualify for, and the music rights you need. If you can maintain both channels, publish adapted versions on each and compare their native analytics rather than assuming one will deliver more reach or income.
How YouTube Shorts and TikTok treat vertical videos differently
For standard YouTube channels, qualifying square or vertical videos uploaded after October 15, 2024, and up to three minutes long are categorized as Shorts. You can upload through YouTube Studio on desktop or use the YouTube app’s upload and trim flow. YouTube says a phone is enough to record, edit, and publish; specialist equipment is not required to start. YouTube’s three-minute Shorts rules and upload guidance describe the current formats and workflow.
TikTok does not have a one-minute general posting minimum in the cited guidance. The one-minute threshold applies to videos seeking eligibility for its Creator Rewards Program: qualifying videos must be original, high-quality, at least one minute long, and meet account and regional conditions. What monetization eligibility means in practice
YouTube Shorts
YouTube says ads can run between Shorts in the Shorts Feed. Monetizing partners must accept the Shorts Monetization Module, and the documented system allocates a Creator Pool using eligible engaged views and music usage before applying a 45% creator revenue share to a creator’s allocation. That figure describes YouTube’s revenue-sharing formula; it is not a forecast of what a channel will earn. Details are in YouTube’s Shorts monetization policy.

YouTube’s monetization eligibility page lists an expanded-access tier for certain features: 500 subscribers, three public uploads within 90 days, and either 3,000 public watch hours within 365 days or 3 million qualified Shorts views within 90 days. The higher threshold it lists for Watch Page Ads and Shorts Feed Ads is 1,000 subscribers and either 4,000 qualified watch hours or 10 million qualified Shorts views in the relevant periods. Feature availability depends on the account and country, so check YouTube’s current eligibility details for your location and channel.
A further rights issue matters for longer Shorts: YouTube says a Short over one minute with an active Content ID claim may be blocked and ineligible for monetization. Check the current rule and the exact status of any claim before publishing, especially when the video uses music. YouTube’s three-minute Shorts page covers the format and claim rule.

TikTok Creator Rewards
Creator Rewards is not a payment guarantee for every TikTok post. TikTok’s stated conditions include account and regional eligibility, good standing, and original, high-quality videos at least one minute long that comply with its Community Guidelines. Duets, Stitches, and sponsored content do not count as original for this program, according to TikTok’s program guidance. A sponsored post may still serve a different business purpose, but it should not be treated as a qualifying Creator Rewards video on that basis.
For a separate potential route to brand work, TikTok One is described as a platform for creators, advertisers, and brands to collaborate. Access criteria include account standing, age, follower and view activity, and recent posting; some requirements vary by region. Check availability and eligibility in your account rather than assuming access or income.
Check music rights separately before cross-posting
A song available inside one app is not automatically licensed for use on the other. For commercial promotion on TikTok, the platform recommends the Commercial Music Library because its tracks are pre-cleared for commercial use; confirm that the license covers the specific use and jurisdiction. On YouTube, use audio available under the applicable YouTube Shorts or Audio Library terms. Music rights can affect both whether a post may remain available and whether it can qualify for monetization.

Before reusing a finished video, verify that you have rights for the visual and audio elements on both services. If a platform’s built-in music is part of the edit, create a version with audio cleared for the destination platform instead of carrying over an assumption that the first service’s permission transfers.
Choose a platform with a practical publishing test
- Start with your audience. Identify where the people you want to reach already watch and engage. The official materials cited here do not establish a universal reach advantage for either platform.
- Match the format to the goal. Use YouTube Shorts for qualifying square or vertical videos up to three minutes. If you are targeting TikTok Creator Rewards, plan for original videos of at least one minute and check all other program conditions.
- Adapt rather than blindly duplicate. Tailor the opening hook, caption, and presentation to each service. Keep the underlying video original where required, and do not count Duets, Stitches, or sponsored TikTok content as Creator Rewards originals.
- Clear audio for each destination. Check permissions independently, especially for promotions and videos using platform-library music.
- Compare results in native analytics. Over a meaningful period, compare similar posts using measures such as retention, engagement, follows, and eligible views. Treat this as your own publishing test, not a controlled platform-wide comparison, and judge results against your goals rather than one viral outlier.
So, should you post on TikTok or YouTube Shorts?
Prioritize the platform where your target audience is active and where the format and monetization conditions fit your plan. Choose YouTube Shorts if its up-to-three-minute format, YouTube workflow, or eligible Shorts Feed revenue route suits your channel. Choose TikTok if its audience and publishing fit your work, and treat Creator Rewards as a specific option only when your account, region, and video meet its requirements. If you can consistently serve both, test adapted posts on both and let your own analytics guide how much effort each channel deserves.
