YouTube announced on October 1, 2026, that it is updating Shorts recommendations to further prioritize original content and reduce the reach of re-uploads that add nothing meaningful. Channels that mainly aggregate or repost other creators’ clips without significant changes will likely receive less distribution in the Shorts feed. YouTube did not quantify the change or promise that original Shorts will get more views.
What YouTube changed in Shorts recommendations
The October 1 announcement describes an update to Shorts recommendation systems—not a ban on using clips, and not a guarantee of extra reach for every original upload. YouTube says it wants to give more priority to original content and reduce reach for material re-uploaded from other creators without meaningful additions. Channels primarily aggregating or re-uploading clips without significant changes will likely see less distribution in the Shorts feed, but YouTube gave no estimate of how much less.
For creators who use someone else’s clip, YouTube recommends adding genuine value through original commentary, distinctive editing, storytelling, or a clear personal point of view. It specifically cautions against minor technical edits or template changes made simply to alter a video. The post offers guidance and examples, not an exhaustive test for originality.

How Shorts recommendations still work
YouTube’s Shorts discovery guidance says the system does not favor a particular format. Shorts are ranked using performance and viewer personalization. When deciding whether to recommend a Short, YouTube considers signals such as whether viewers choose to watch, ignore it, or mark it “not interested”; whether they stay; average view duration; average percentage viewed; likes; and post-watch survey results. Topic interest, competition from other Shorts, and seasonality can also affect how many people see a video.
The originality update adds emphasis within that broader recommendation system; it does not replace these stated considerations. An original Short can still receive varying reach as audience interests, competing videos, and seasonal demand change. YouTube’s Shorts search and discovery tips also say there is no minimum posting cadence required for Shorts to perform well, and that Shorts performance does not negatively affect long-form video recommendations.

How different approaches to using clips compare

Recommendations, monetization, and copyright are separate questions
YouTube’s monetization policy separately defines reused content as material already available on YouTube or another online source that is repurposed without significant original commentary, substantive modifications, or educational or entertainment value. The reused-content review applies to a channel overall and is separate from copyright enforcement. YouTube says it can apply even if the creator has permission to use the material.

The policy gives critical reviews, reaction videos with commentary, edited footage with a new storyline and commentary, and substantive edits that demonstrate a channel’s unique contribution as examples that may be permitted under its reused-content rules. “May be permitted” does not mean automatic monetization approval, copyright clearance, or a recommendation boost.

Separately, YouTube’s July 15, 2025 notice renamed its repetitious-content policy “inauthentic content” to clarify that repetitive or mass-produced material is ineligible for monetization under existing rules. That notice said the reused-content policy did not change. This monetization-policy update is distinct from the October 2026 change to Shorts recommendations. - When using another creator’s clip, make your contribution clear to the viewer through commentary, a new story, substantive editing, or your own perspective—not just a cosmetic change.
- Evaluate recommendation reach, channel monetization eligibility, and copyright status as separate matters; meeting one standard does not settle the others.
- Pay attention to audience response as well as originality. YouTube continues to describe Shorts ranking in terms of viewer behavior and personalization, alongside topic interest, competition, and seasonality.
- Do not treat a particular format or posting schedule as mandatory. YouTube says it does not favor a particular Shorts format and sets no minimum posting cadence for Shorts performance.
The general recommendation-system help page says YouTube uses more than 80 billion pieces of information called signals. That undated figure describes recommendations broadly; it does not specify the weighting of originality in Shorts or measure the October 2026 update. YouTube’s explanation of how recommendations work provides that broader context.
