YouTube Shorts can now run up to three minutes, provided a standard-channel upload is square or vertical and meets YouTube’s classification rules. The change took effect for new uploads on October 15, 2024; a video does not become a Short just because it is three minutes or shorter.
How long can a YouTube Short be?
For standard channels, a qualifying Short can be up to three minutes long. YouTube announced the change on October 3, 2024, with the new limit starting October 15. YouTube Shorts product director Todd Sherman put it this way: “Starting on October 15, you can upload Shorts up to 3 minutes long.” YouTube said the longer limit responded to a top creator request.
Under YouTube’s current Help guidance, standard-channel videos uploaded on or after October 15, 2024 are categorized as Shorts when they have a square or vertical aspect ratio and run for up to three minutes. A horizontal video does not qualify under that rule simply because it is brief. Videos uploaded before October 15, 2024 retain their prior long-form classification.
Official Artist Channels and channels linked to a music Content Owner have separate date treatment in YouTube’s Help documentation, so creators on those channels should check the applicable rule rather than assume the standard-channel cutoff applies.

Why YouTube extended the limit
The three-minute cap gives creators room for fuller tutorials, demonstrations, explainers, story episodes, and commentary without moving to long-form solely because a video exceeds one minute. YouTube also paired the announcement with templates, a refreshed player, and trends features.
The timing brings Shorts closer to TikTok’s longer-video direction. TikTok’s developer documentation says all creators can post videos up to three minutes, while some accounts have access to five- or ten-minute videos. So YouTube’s limit matches TikTok’s documented baseline, but not the longest durations available to some TikTok users. TikTok’s available features can vary by account.

TikTok has also made longer viewing part of its creator strategy. In a March 18, 2024 Creator Rewards announcement, the company said, “50% of the time people spend on TikTok is spent watching content that is longer than one minute.” The statement also described a rewards formula focused on originality, play duration, search value, and audience engagement. That context helps explain the competitive appeal of longer short-form videos; it does not show that a three-minute YouTube Short will perform better than a shorter one.
What the longer limit means for creators
Use the extra time when the story needs it
A three-minute ceiling can suit content that benefits from a complete sequence: a multi-step demonstration, a concise lesson, a short narrative, or commentary that needs more context. It is not a reason to stretch a clip that already works at a shorter length.

Keep the format and classification rules in mind
For standard channels, square or vertical framing and the upload date are part of Shorts classification. The three-minute limit is a maximum, not a rule that every video under three minutes will be categorized as a Short regardless of its shape or when it was uploaded.
Judge performance with your own audience
YouTube has not promised a reach or revenue increase just because a creator uses the longer limit. Compare videos of different lengths using retention, completion rate, rewatches, comments, and subscriber conversion. Keep the subject and presentation as comparable as possible so duration is not confused with other changes.

Can a three-minute Short earn Shorts revenue?
Eligible three-minute Shorts can participate in Shorts-feed revenue sharing. Eligibility is not automatic: a video and channel must meet YouTube’s applicable monetization requirements, and music or other rights claims can affect what happens to an upload.

What to take away from the TikTok comparison
The change makes the platforms more alike in one respect: both support videos up to three minutes for their baseline creator offering, according to their published guidance. The resemblance does not make the products interchangeable. Creators comparing them should account for account-specific duration limits, format and classification rules, discovery surfaces, monetization eligibility, music and Content ID constraints, audience retention, and available workflow tools.
For YouTube Shorts, the practical change is straightforward: eligible standard-channel square or vertical uploads made from October 15, 2024 can run as long as three minutes. Whether that additional time helps depends on the content and audience, not the maximum duration alone.
