In March 2025, YouTube acknowledged reports that some iPhone and iPad viewers were getting unusually blurry playback, including 144p or 360p even on strong connections. YouTube said it was investigating, but no fix timeline was available in the report published March 20. The linked YouTube Help Community page is now titled “[FIXED] Video and Shorts Playing in Low Quality on IOS”; the accessible page view does not establish when or how the issue was fixed.
What iPhone viewers reported in March 2025
MacRumors reported that some viewers saw YouTube videos and Shorts play at 144p or 360p despite having a strong internet connection. Some users who manually selected a higher quality reportedly encountered buffering. These resolutions describe reported symptoms, not a measured share or number of affected users.
YouTube’s response, as quoted in the March 20, 2025 report, was: “We’re aware some of you are experiencing lower than usual video quality when trying to watch Videos and Shorts.” It added: “Rest assured, we’re actively looking into this!” The report said YouTube had not provided a repair timeline at that time.

What is known about the fix
The YouTube Help Community page linked from the report now carries the title “[FIXED] Video and Shorts Playing in Low Quality on IOS.” That title indicates the issue is marked fixed on the page, but its accessible view does not provide a precise fix date, technical cause, app version, or rollout details. The March 2025 report should therefore be read as a historical incident, not evidence that the same problem remains widespread in October 2026.

First check whether a new upload is still processing
A newly uploaded video may initially play only at low quality while YouTube processes higher-resolution versions. This is different from the reported playback problem affecting existing videos. YouTube says processing time depends on factors including format, length, frame rate, quality, and traffic. Higher resolutions can take several hours.
For example, YouTube says a 60-minute 4K video at 30 fps can take up to four hours to process in high resolution; 4K at 60 fps can take longer. YouTube also notes that 4K videos are four times larger than 1080p videos. These processing figures explain upload delays, not the cause of the iPhone playback incident.

- Open the newly uploaded video’s Quality menu in the player.
- If the higher resolutions are not available, YouTube says processing is still underway. Wait and check again rather than treating the temporary limitation as proof of a playback defect.
General steps to try for a current playback problem
YouTube’s iPhone and iPad troubleshooting guidance covers general streaming errors. It does not say these steps specifically fix the March 2025 low-quality incident.
- Make sure the YouTube app is up to date.
- Close and reopen the app, then restart the device if the problem continues.
- Try a different internet connection to see whether playback changes.
- Use the player’s quality controls to select a higher resolution when that option is available.
- For certain playback issues, YouTube also describes offloading and reinstalling the app.
If the problem is limited to a new upload and higher resolutions are missing from its Quality menu, allow processing to finish. If existing videos remain blurry, these are general troubleshooting steps—not a confirmed incident-specific workaround.
