If YouTube Premium stops as soon as your phone locks, check the YouTube app’s Background Play setting first. Open Settings > Background & Downloads > Background Play and select Always on. Also confirm you’re signed in to the Google account that has an active Premium membership. YouTube’s setting names can vary slightly by app version.
Set Background Play to Always on
Background Play is the YouTube mobile app feature that continues audio when the screen is off. YouTube documents three choices: Always on, Off, and Headphones or external speakers. The last option intentionally stops playback when you are not connected to an eligible external audio device; Off disables background playback. YouTube says Always on is the default. YouTube Premium benefits and Background Play settings
- Open the YouTube app and tap your profile picture.
- Tap Settings, then Background & Downloads.
- Tap Background Play and choose Always on.
- Play an eligible video, lock the phone, and check whether audio continues.
Shorts are not eligible for Background Play. If playback stops only for a Short, try a regular video before changing other settings. Background Play works in YouTube’s mobile apps and requires an active Premium membership; availability may depend on location and content. YouTube’s Background Play troubleshooting
Confirm the right account has Premium
Premium benefits apply to the Google account associated with the membership. In YouTube, tap your profile picture and check Paid memberships or Manage. If the displayed account is not the one with Premium, switch accounts. YouTube also recommends signing out and back in if the membership does not appear. For a membership purchased through iTunes, use the YouTube account used to make that purchase. Troubleshoot YouTube Premium benefits

Update and restart YouTube
- Check your device’s app store for a YouTube update and install it if available.
- Close YouTube, reopen it, and test lock-screen playback again.
- If that does not help, restart the phone and retry.
YouTube lists updating the app and restarting the app or device among its troubleshooting steps. These steps may clear a temporary problem, but they do not identify a universal cause.
Check background access, audio, and connection
If Background Play is set to Always on and the correct account is active, check whether the phone allows YouTube to use background or mobile data. The setting path differs by phone and operating-system version, so use your device’s current guidance for background-app access.

- Check whether another open app is playing audio or taking over audio playback.
- Confirm the phone has a usable internet connection; YouTube recommends checking connection strength.
- Review notification settings if playback controls or playback behavior appear affected.
YouTube includes these as diagnostic checks, not as a guarantee that any one setting is the cause. Its separate 3 Mbps tip concerns video downloads, not a proven minimum for screen-off Background Play, so it is not a fix to apply to this problem.

Android
For PiP, YouTube requires permission in the Android app settings as well as the PiP control in YouTube’s Playback settings. YouTube says Premium playback continues as Background Play after you dismiss the PiP window. Use Picture-in-Picture on Android
iPhone and iPad
YouTube’s PiP instructions require iOS 15 or later and two settings: in iOS, open Settings > General > Picture-in-Picture and turn on Start PiP Automatically; in YouTube, open Settings > Playback and enable Picture-in-Picture. YouTube says PiP is on by default on iOS 15 and later unless Background Play has been turned off in YouTube. For audio that should continue after locking the screen, check Background Play itself first. YouTube Picture-in-Picture help

If playback still stops, record what happens
Note whether audio stops immediately after you leave YouTube or continues briefly before stopping. Also note any error message shown when you return to the app. YouTube recommends submitting feedback from the app with system logs selected. If the checks above do not resolve the issue, consult your phone maker’s current guidance for background-app restrictions; the relevant controls can differ by device and operating-system version.
