YouTube Premium Lite is a lower-priced subscription for viewers who mainly watch creator videos. Its March 2025 expansion brought the pilot to the United States and broadened access in Thailand, Germany and Australia. Since then, YouTube has added background playback and downloads, but Lite still allows advertising on much of YouTube’s music content, Shorts, and some search or browsing surfaces. Availability and pricing depend on the country and can change.
What YouTube Premium Lite is
Premium Lite is a digital YouTube membership intended to remove ads from most conventional videos, particularly creator-led videos, without including every benefit of full YouTube Premium. It works on supported phones, laptops and TVs; there is no physical product to buy.
It is best understood as a narrower subscription rather than a trial version of full Premium. Google positions full individual Premium as covering all YouTube and YouTube Music content without ads, with offline and background playback. Lite keeps important exceptions for music and several YouTube surfaces.

On March 5, 2025, YouTube said it would begin expanding the Premium Lite pilot to users in the United States. The announced U.S. price was $7.99 per month. The company said that, in the following weeks, Premium Lite would also become available to all users in its then-current pilot countries: Thailand, Germany and Australia.

That is a current comparison value, not a universal price or a promise that every country uses a dollar-equivalent rate. Google also says Premium Lite is included with Google AI Pro in select countries, subject to regional eligibility and plan terms.

What Premium Lite includes after the 2026 update
On February 24, 2026, YouTube announced that Background Play and Downloads were coming to Premium Lite. YouTube said the capabilities would roll out over the coming weeks everywhere Premium Lite was available.
For eligible videos, Lite therefore supports watching with the screen off or while using another app, and saving videos for offline viewing. The word “eligible” matters: these benefits do not turn every YouTube video or every type of content into a full-Premium experience.

Who should choose Premium Lite?
Lite makes sense if you mainly watch creator videos
If your viewing is mostly standard channels and you want fewer interruptions at a lower local price, Lite can cover that use case while now adding background playback and downloads for eligible videos.
Full Premium is the better fit for music-heavy viewing
Choose full Premium if ad-free music, concerts, songs, YouTube Music, or dependable background and offline access to that content is central to your subscription. Lite’s music exceptions are the decisive difference.
Check the local offer before subscribing
Open YouTube’s membership options while signed in and verify the displayed country, price, included features and eligibility. A plan available in one market may not be offered in another, and prices can change over time.
What the 125-million figure means
YouTube said on March 5, 2025 that YouTube Music and YouTube Premium had passed 125 million subscribers, including trials, worldwide. That is a combined figure for those services—not a Premium Lite subscriber count.
