Spotify has the clearest documented route to music in Android Auto when your phone is offline: Premium users can save music in advance, and Spotify says its Offline Backup can also appear on the Android Auto Home screen if Offline listening is enabled and songs are in the phone’s cache. YouTube Music Premium supports planned downloads, while Amazon Music’s offline options depend on the subscription tier—and its help page does not establish whether downloaded subscription tracks play through Android Auto without a connection.
That makes Spotify the strongest choice on the documented offline features, not a proven winner in sound quality or day-to-day driving. Those comparisons require firsthand testing. The right option for you depends on whether you want prepared downloads, a cached fallback, Prime’s more limited offline selection, or files already stored on your phone.
Which music apps work offline with Android Auto?
Android Auto supports compatible media apps, including Spotify, Amazon Music, and YouTube Music. You need to be signed in to the app on your phone, and some apps or features may require a paid subscription. Google’s Android Auto media guidance includes voice-command examples for these services.
Compatibility with Android Auto is not the same as a guarantee that every offline feature will work in the car interface. Spotify explicitly documents its Offline Backup in Android Auto; Google and Amazon’s cited guidance do not confirm that Amazon Music subscription downloads will play through Android Auto while the phone is disconnected.

Spotify: the best-documented fallback when you lose signal
Save music deliberately
Spotify Premium subscribers can download music, albums, and playlists for offline listening. Spotify says downloads need an internet connection at least once every 30 days. Its US feature page advertises up to 10,000 songs per device across up to five devices; that is Spotify’s published limit for its US page, not an independent measurement, and plan terms can change. See Spotify’s offline-download feature page.

Use Offline Backup as a cache-based spare
Spotify’s Offline Backup is a separate safety net: it can make cached music available without a separate download. Spotify says it can appear on the Spotify Home screen in Android Auto while the phone is offline. It depends on Offline listening being enabled and songs being present in the device cache, so it is not a promise that your whole library—or any specific track you have not saved or recently cached—will be available.
If Offline Backup is missing, Spotify identifies several possible causes: too little recent listening, insufficient phone storage, a cleared cache, or reinstalling the app. Treat it as a useful extra, not a replacement for downloading the music you know you will want. Spotify’s car-playback guidance also advises setting up the app before driving and avoiding interaction with the device while the car is moving.

YouTube Music: planned downloads and phone-stored files
Download tracks for offline listening
YouTube Music Premium members can download music to a mobile device. Google says downloads need an internet connection at least once every 30 days to remain available. Smart Downloads can use listening history, and playlists can refresh in the background while connected to Wi-Fi. Google’s download guidance also notes that podcasts can have separate availability exceptions.
Play files already saved on your Android phone
YouTube Music on Android can browse and play audio files stored on the device, including offline. It can play those files alone or in playlists made only from device files; Google says they cannot be added to playlists that also contain streaming YouTube Music songs. This is a distinct option from downloading tracks through a subscription. See Google’s YouTube Music Android help.

For Android Auto, Google’s instructions are to sign in to YouTube Music and open the Music tab. If the app reports an error, Google recommends checking that you are signed in. The documentation confirms the app’s Android Auto access and its phone-level offline features, but does not specifically say that every downloaded or local-file library will be presented in the car while offline.

Amazon’s offline entitlements differ by subscription. Its offline-download help page says Prime subscribers can download All-Access Playlists, while Standard and Unlimited subscribers can download songs, albums, and playlists. It also lists Standard, HD, Ultra HD, and Spatial Audio formats.
Amazon says downloaded subscription and All-Access Playlist tracks are accessible only inside the Amazon Music app: they cannot be exported to another app or device, copied to a CD, or copied to external storage. Google lists Amazon Music as an Android Auto-compatible media app, but the cited sources do not settle whether those app-bound downloads remain playable through Android Auto with no network connection. If offline car playback is essential, test that exact situation before depending on it.
Choose based on the kind of offline listening you need
- You want an offline fallback in Android Auto: Spotify has the most explicit documentation for this, through Offline Backup, provided the Premium feature’s conditions are met.
- You want to select music before a trip: Spotify Premium and YouTube Music Premium both document planned downloads. Amazon’s download choices depend on whether you have Prime, Standard, or Unlimited.
- You already keep music files on your phone: YouTube Music on Android can play local audio files offline, with the playlist-mixing limitation described above.
- You have Amazon Prime but not a broader Amazon Music tier: Amazon’s cited UK guidance specifies All-Access Playlist downloads for Prime, rather than downloads of any song, album, or playlist.
Prepare and verify offline playback before driving
- While connected to the internet, sign in and save the music you want. Use the relevant app’s download controls where your plan permits. For Spotify, also enable Offline listening if you want Offline Backup.
- Check that the saved music is available on the phone. Do not rely on a playlist or album that has not finished downloading, or on Spotify’s cache alone for a specific track.
- Connect the phone to Android Auto and open the service. Google’s general instructions are to use a compatible media app while signed in; for YouTube Music, open the Music tab.
- Verify the offline case safely before the trip. While parked, disconnect the phone from the internet and check that the intended music is accessible in Android Auto. This matters especially for Amazon Music, whose cited help does not resolve offline playback in the car interface.
Offline features have maintenance conditions: YouTube Music and Spotify say downloads need an internet connection at least once every 30 days. Reconnect periodically, and avoid clearing app data or cache if you are relying on stored music or Spotify’s cache-based Offline Backup.
