You can download a YouTube movie you purchased for offline viewing in the YouTube app on a supported iPhone, iPad, or Android device. Sign in with the Google Account used for the purchase, open Your movies & TV, select the movie, and tap Download. You do not need YouTube Premium. The download stays encrypted in the app; it is not a video file you can export or play elsewhere.
How to download a movie you bought on YouTube
- Check the account. In the YouTube app, make sure you are signed in with the Google Account that bought the movie. Switch accounts if needed.
- Open your purchases. Tap your profile picture, then Your movies & TV. Purchased and rented titles should appear there. YouTube’s download instructions list iOS 11 or later and Android 16.23 or later; device and app requirements can change.
- Select the movie and download it. Tap the title, then Download. Choose one of the qualities offered for that title and device. YouTube’s help page says UHD is not available for download.
- Choose audio or subtitles if offered. If the movie offers multiple audio languages, select the track you want. Subtitles available for the title can also be used offline.
- Play it offline. Wait for the download to finish, then find the title in the app’s Downloads playlist. Depending on the app version, you may find it under your profile picture or in Library/Recents.
YouTube does not require Premium for this purchase download. Its offline-video FAQ explains that downloads are encrypted and can only be watched in the YouTube app.
What the download lets you do—and what it does not
A download lets you watch the movie in the YouTube app without an internet connection. It does not create a normal MP4 or other portable file. You cannot move it to a computer, external drive, photo gallery, or another video player. If you want to watch on a computer or television, sign in and stream the purchase on a supported device instead; YouTube describes purchase viewing across supported computers, mobile devices, TVs, streaming devices, and game consoles in its purchase-watching guidance. The offline-download steps, by contrast, are for iOS and Android.
Purchase or rental: the rules differ

If the movie will not download
- The title is missing: Confirm that the app is signed into the account that made the purchase, then check Your movies & TV. Purchase availability can vary by country.
- Download is unavailable or the quality options are limited: Options depend on the purchased quality and the device. UHD downloads are not offered under YouTube’s cited guidance.
- The app is waiting for Wi-Fi: If the setting is available, open profile picture > Settings and turn off Download over Wi-Fi only under Background & Downloads to permit mobile-data downloads.
- The title is downloaded in another app: You cannot download the same movie or episode in both YouTube and Google Play Movies & TV on one device at the same time. Remove the existing download from one app before downloading it in the other.
- Your device is low on storage: YouTube does not provide a universal file-size estimate. Check available device storage and choose a lower quality if the app offers one.
Remove a download when you no longer need it
To free device storage, open the YouTube app’s Downloads playlist, locate the title, and remove its downloaded copy. This removes the offline copy from that device; it does not turn an app download into a file you can keep elsewhere. YouTube’s download page covers managing downloaded titles.
