If Chinese characters appear in the YouTube app on your smart TV, first check where they show up. Chinese menus, a Chinese on-screen search keyboard, and garbled text in video titles can have different causes and may need different fixes.
Identify where the Chinese characters appear
Check the affected screen and whether the TV’s own menus or other apps are affected. That helps distinguish a language setting from a YouTube display problem.
- YouTube menus, settings, or account labels: Check the app’s language setting.
- Only the on-screen letters while searching: Check the search keyboard language, which is separate from the app language.
- The TV’s settings and other apps too: Check the TV’s system language.
- YouTube menu icons or labels show Chinese symbols, or video titles look garbled: This may be an app display issue rather than a language selection.
- Text appears only in a video, captions, subtitles, or a playback overlay: Treat it separately from a menu-language problem; the available support information does not establish that these symptoms share a cause.
Note your TV brand and model, operating-system version if available, which screens are affected, and whether the problem remains after changing YouTube’s language. These details can help when consulting the manufacturer’s model-specific support.

Change the language in the YouTube TV app
YouTube says its TV app follows the device’s language and location by default, but you can change language in the app. Exact labels may vary by device and app version. YouTube’s TV app language instructions also list Chinese as an available search-keyboard language.

- Open YouTube on the TV.
- Open Settings → Language.
- Select the language you want and confirm or apply it if prompted.
If the app menus are already in your preferred language but only the search characters are Chinese, open Search and choose the keyboard language there. Changing the keyboard does not necessarily change the app’s menus, and changing the app language does not necessarily change the keyboard selection.
Check the TV’s system language if other menus are affected
If the TV’s own settings or other apps also use Chinese, check the system language in the TV settings. The path varies by manufacturer, model, software version, and region. For example, LG’s US guide gives these paths:

These are LG-specific instructions from LG’s US language-setting guide, not a universal smart-TV menu path. LG notes that the available languages depend on the TV’s sales region; a language not listed for that TV cannot be added through this setting.
When the language settings do not fix YouTube’s display
Sony has documented a YouTube-specific issue on applicable Android TV and Google TV products in which Chinese characters or symbols could appear in the YouTube menu, while video titles could use a Chinese font or look garbled. Sony said the issue did not prevent viewers from watching content as usual. Its support page, last modified July 15, 2022, said the issue was under investigation and no countermeasure was available at that time. That historical status does not establish whether the issue remains unresolved today, or explain similar symptoms on other brands.

If YouTube’s language is correct and the affected text is still in menus or titles, changing the TV’s global language is not a guaranteed fix. Check support for your exact TV model and contact the TV manufacturer or relevant app support if needed. Avoid assuming that the Sony report diagnoses every case on Samsung, LG, Roku, or other devices.
