Start by opening the README as visitors see it on GitHub and clicking the demo link. Note the exact destination and what happens; then check whether the target is mistyped, moved, deleted, incorrectly referenced from the README’s location, or no longer deployed. Repair the destination, add an automated Markdown link check, and click through again yourself. A checker can flag URL or path failures, but it cannot confirm that an interactive demo works as intended.
Reproduce the failure in the rendered README
Open the repository page on GitHub and click the demo link there. Record the link’s exact URL and the observed result, such as an error page, a missing file, or a page that loads but does not show the expected demo. If the rendered destination is surprising, inspect the raw Markdown to see what was actually written.
Also confirm which README GitHub is displaying. GitHub can surface a README from the repository root, .github, or docs, so editing a different copy may leave the visible link unchanged. GitHub Docs explains where repository READMEs may be located and how they appear to visitors.

Identify what kind of link is failing
External link to a live demo
If the destination is a hosted demo, inspect the URL for a typo, the wrong scheme (http instead of https), an outdated domain, an omitted path, or a stale fragment after #. Check the hosting or deployment configuration if the URL is correct but the destination is unavailable. Update the README to the canonical URL for the current deployment; do not assume that a repository link automatically tracks a separately hosted site.

Link to a file in the repository
Resolve a local Markdown link from the location of the file that contains it. For example, docs/README.md linking to examples/demo.html needs a path relative to docs/, such as ../examples/demo.html. GitHub supports ./ and ../; a link beginning with / is relative to the repository root. GitHub’s README documentation describes these relative-link rules.
Check each directory and filename for spelling and capitalization errors. A path that happens to work on a case-insensitive computer may fail on a case-sensitive host. Prefer repository-relative paths when you want a link to work for people who clone the project; a machine-specific absolute path will not be portable.

Link to a branch-specific file
GitHub transforms relative links according to the branch currently being viewed, which is useful when the same file exists across branches. But a URL that explicitly names a branch can point to content that changes as commits are added. If readers need a file from one exact revision, use a commit permalink: GitHub Docs shows how to get a permanent link to a file. That is generally appropriate for a code sample or reference file, not a substitute for checking the current URL of a live demo.

Repair the link, then verify the reader’s experience
- Choose the right destination. For a live demo, use the current canonical deployment URL. For a file in the repository, use a path resolved from the README’s location. For content that must stay tied to a specific commit, use a commit permalink.
- Edit the Markdown link. Check the destination’s spelling, capitalization, scheme, path, and fragment. Confirm that you are changing the README GitHub actually displays.
- Open the updated README on GitHub. Click the link in its rendered form and confirm that the destination loads. For an interactive demo, try the expected interaction and check that the expected content appears; a successful HTTP response alone does not establish that behavior.
Add an automated link check to catch regressions
A Markdown link checker can scan documentation in CI or in a scheduled workflow, helping catch broken external URLs, local paths, or fragments before a reader does. GitHub Marketplace listings provide examples: Markdown Link Checker checks hyperlinks in Markdown files; Markdown dead link checker describes checks for missing webpages, incorrect file links, and nonexistent fragments, with configuration options; and Check Markdown describes a check_broken_urls command for external URLs and other checks. These are examples, not a tested ranking or endorsement. Marketplace listings can change, so verify current versions and project activity before adopting an Action.

When choosing and configuring a checker, decide which Markdown files it should scan and whether it covers external links, repository files, and fragments. Review how it reports failures and lets you exclude URLs or narrow scope. Also consider how it handles 403 and 429 responses, timeouts, and temporary server errors: a blocked or transient response is a reason to investigate, not automatic proof that a demo has permanently disappeared. No checker establishes that a loaded demo behaves correctly for a user.
After adding the check, run it and investigate each reported failure. Fix confirmed bad links, and manually open the demo from the rendered README to verify that readers reach the intended experience.
