When your phone battery suddenly drains faster than usual, check what changed and what the phone’s battery report shows before replacing the battery. High screen use, background activity, weak cellular signal, and work after an update can all explain a drop in runtime. The right fix depends on the cause—and power-saving settings may delay some apps or features.
First, check whether the drain is unusual
Compare the recent period with a typical day, not just one short stretch. Ask whether you have used the phone more for navigation, video, gaming, streaming, the camera, hotspot, or location services. Travel through areas with poor reception, a new app, more notifications, or a recent system update can also change battery use.
A high battery-use percentage by itself does not prove something is wrong. Consider how long the phone was in use and whether the reported activity matches your habits.
Read the phone’s battery report
iPhone
- Open Settings > Battery.
- Review Battery suggestions or Insights, then check App and System Activity Usage for apps or system activity using power.
- Look at on-screen and background activity. Apple’s battery-use guidance also identifies notifications and low or no cellular coverage as possible contributors. Apple’s iPhone battery-drain guidance explains the steps and recommendations.
Battery health is in Settings > Battery > Battery Health & Charging on iPhone 14 and earlier, and Settings > Battery > Battery Health on iPhone 15 and later. On iPhone 15 and later, this view can also show cycle count, manufacture date, and first-use date. Apple’s battery usage and health guide describes the model-dependent details.

Android phones
Open the Battery section in Settings and review usage. Menu names and available controls differ by manufacturer and Android version. Google’s Android battery guidance describes options such as restricting apps with high battery use and using Adaptive Battery where available.
Google Pixel
- Open Settings > Battery > Battery diagnostics > Battery draining too quickly.
- To check an app, open Battery usage and inspect its background-use controls.

Match the fix to the activity you find
If the screen is using more power than usual
- Reduce brightness if it is higher than you need; enable auto-brightness if it suits your use.
- Shorten screen timeout or auto-lock so the display turns off sooner.
If an app is active in the background
For an app with unusually high background activity, reduce background use or notifications if you can accept the tradeoff. Avoid force-stopping every app as a routine battery fix; focus on the app or activity the report identifies.

Use Wi-Fi when practical and avoid prolonged use where cellular reception is weak. If you will be without coverage for a while, Airplane Mode can prevent repeated network searching, but it disconnects the phone from cellular service and other wireless connections governed by that setting.

If demanding activities explain the drain
Long navigation, video, gaming, streaming, camera, hotspot, and location sessions can consume more power. Reduce or shorten the activity when it is the main cause; there is no need to disable features you use regularly if they are not driving the drain.
If you need more runtime right now
Turn on Low Power Mode on iPhone or Battery Saver on Android when longer runtime matters more than background refresh or immediate app and network behavior. Apple’s Low Power Mode guide describes features it limits or disables. Google notes that Android Battery Saver may delay some apps, features, and network connections in its battery guidance.

If the phone is getting hot
Keep it cool and avoid sustained heavy use in hot conditions. Google notes that heat can accelerate battery drain and damage the battery; it does not give a universal temperature threshold for this troubleshooting advice.

Allow time after an update, then reassess
After an operating-system update or new-device setup, background work can temporarily affect battery life and thermal performance. Apple advises waiting a few days after an update before checking whether battery life has improved; see its iPhone battery-drain guidance.

If the drain continues on Android, restart the phone and check for Android and app updates. A factory reset is a later step, not a quick first fix: it removes phone data and apps, so back up first. If the problem remains, contact the phone manufacturer using its support route.
When to seek battery service
On a supported iPhone, check Battery Health. If it displays Service, Apple says to consider battery replacement and follow the on-screen instructions. Apple says the battery should be serviced or recycled by Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider. See Apple’s iPhone battery service guidance.
For other phones, use the manufacturer’s diagnostics and service process; Google’s Pixel guidance directs users to the manufacturer if troubleshooting does not resolve the issue. Replacement parts must match the exact phone model. There is no supported universal battery-health percentage that means every phone needs replacement.
A power bank can provide temporary charging access, but it does not identify or repair abnormal drain. The choice between settings changes and service should follow the evidence: battery-use activity, battery-health or diagnostic results, whether the change began after an update, and whether the problem persists.
