Build when proprietary bidding, data use, workflows or marketplace behavior are central to your business and you can support the engineering and operations. License when a provider’s platform meets your needs but you want a branded or more controlled product. Rent or use a managed service when you need buying capability or market access quickly and can accept less control over the platform. These are decision rules, not guarantees about cost or performance; get current terms and service details from providers.

First, distinguish the product you need

A DSP, an ad exchange and an ad network sit on related parts of the advertising supply chain, but they do different jobs. A demand-side platform (DSP) supports advertisers and agencies buying media. An exchange facilitates auction-based buying and selling of publisher inventory. An ad network aggregates publisher inventory and sells it to advertisers; a network’s services may overlap with exchange or DSP functions. A vendor’s product label alone does not establish what it actually does. See the IAB ecosystem overview, Amazon Ads’ ad exchange guide and Google Authorized Buyers’ overview.

Before comparing build, license and rent, write down the business job: for example, buying campaigns for clients, operating an auction marketplace, or packaging publisher inventory for sale. Then list which capabilities must be yours—such as bidder logic, workflow, data use or marketplace rules—and which can come from a provider. If your need is simply to buy inventory, owning an exchange or ad network may solve a different problem.

Compare the three operating models

Model Consider it when What you take on or give up
Build Distinctive bidding, data use, workflow or marketplace behavior is essential to your product and justifies maintaining the capability. You own more of the system’s design and control, and must plan for engineering, integrations, reliability, latency, security, governance, standards maintenance and access to buyers or sellers.
License A provider’s platform supplies the capabilities you need, but you want a branded or controlled product without developing every core component. You depend on the license, customization and support terms. Investigate integration effort, data access and portability, capacity, minimum commitments and exit provisions.
Rent or use a managed service You need buying capability or market access quickly and can accept less ownership of the platform and its day-to-day operation. You rely more on the provider’s platform or service. Check fees, transparency, campaign and data control, account eligibility, provider dependence and whether workflows can move later.

“Rent” is not a precise description of every vendor offer. A rented DSP seat, a licensed platform and a managed buying service can have different allocations of decision-making, data access and operational responsibility. Ask the provider to describe exactly what you can control and what it operates for you.

What OpenRTB does—and does not—provide

Real-time bidding (RTB) transacts an individual impression through an on-the-spot auction. OpenRTB is a common communications protocol for automated digital media trading. In the documented flow, a supply source sends bid requests to demand sources; those sources return bids; the exchange or other supply source applies auction rules, selects a winner and communicates outcome information. The IAB overview and OpenRTB 3.0 specification describe the standard and its role.

Implementing OpenRTB does not, by itself, give you inventory, commercial access to a marketplace, a production-ready bidder or ongoing operational support. Google’s Authorized Buyers documentation describes how buyers such as DSPs, trading desks and ad networks connect to that marketplace to receive bid requests; that is a specific access relationship, not a promise that any RTB-compatible system can participate in every marketplace. Confirm onboarding, eligibility and technical requirements with each supply or demand partner.

ECHOGEAR Server Rack Screws 25 Pack - 10/32 Steel Screws with Attached Nylon Washers & Pilot Point Heads - Made to Use with Network Racks, Enclosures, & Cabinets
  • Expanding your network setup? These 10/32 rack mount screws work with any standard networking rack, cabinet, or enclosure.
  • These screws are built from high-grade steel and coated with black zinc to prevent stripping. Because nothing will ruin your day faster than stripped screws.
  • Rack rash? No thanks. Pre-attached nylon washers save time and keep your rack looking nice. Just bring a Philips screwdriver and let's get to it.
  • Sometimes it's hard to get the screw in the hole. That's why we added self-guiding pilot points to speed up installation and prevent curse words.
  • Big project? We've got groups of 25, 50, and 100 screws to choose from. Run into an issue with your rack? We've got ECHOGEAR pros available 7 days a week to help out.

Standards and extensions evolve. The IAB Tech Lab OpenRTB standards page lists OpenRTB v2.6-202309. Confirm the version and implementation requirements that apply to your integrations with the relevant partners rather than assuming one version fits every connection.

Use a practical decision sequence

  1. Define the job and the must-own capabilities. Separate your business goal from the platform you imagine building. Specify whether you need to buy media, facilitate auctions, aggregate and sell inventory, or some combination. Mark which bidding logic, data, workflows or marketplace rules are genuinely differentiating.
  2. Check existing access first. Determine whether a buyer platform, licensed product or managed service can supply the required inventory access and workflow. Verify eligibility and what the provider actually operates; protocol compatibility alone is not marketplace access.
  3. Scope the smallest defensible build. If essential capabilities remain unmet, identify only the system components and integrations needed to deliver them. Include ongoing operations and commercial onboarding in the scope—not just the bidder or exchange software.
  4. Compare total terms, not headline rates. Request a complete fee breakdown and ask whether charges are included in clearing prices or appended. The IAB Europe Supply Chain Transparency Guide raises this cost-transparency issue. Also compare usage charges, minimum commitments, support, customization and exit terms; providers’ current commercial terms must be obtained directly.
  5. Assign operational ownership. For every option, name who handles integrations, uptime, latency, security, standards changes, campaign decisions and incident response. A platform’s feature list does not answer who is accountable for running it.
  6. Test the exit path before signing. Establish what data and workflows can be exported, how integrations can be changed, and what happens to service and access when the agreement ends. For a build, plan how your team will maintain partner connections and standards over time.

What building and operating a stack entails

A build is more than implementing an auction protocol. A production system needs partner integrations, a bidder or marketplace workflow, reliable low-latency operation, security and governance, and a way to maintain compatibility as standards and partner requirements change. It also needs commercial relationships that provide access to the inventory or demand the business depends on. Scope both the initial implementation and the ongoing team and operating responsibilities before treating a build as feasible.

For one deployment example, AWS publishes a reference architecture for an ad-tech private network that places DSP and SSP deployments in the same AWS Region and uses AWS PrivateLink to route RTB traffic over a private connection. This is an AWS-specific architecture example, not evidence that the approach is best or least expensive for every organization. See AWS Guidance for AdTech Private Network on AWS.

Questions to put to each provider

  • Which functions are included: buying, auction operation, inventory aggregation, campaign management, reporting or integrations?
  • Who controls bidding decisions, data use, workflows and marketplace rules, and what data can you export?
  • How is every fee charged, including any amount included in or added to clearing prices?
  • What are the current usage terms, minimum commitments, capacity limits, support scope and onboarding requirements?
  • Which integrations and standards versions are supported, and who handles updates and operational incidents?
  • What must happen to move campaigns, data and integrations to another provider or to your own system?

No comparable vendor pricing, contract minimums, implementation timelines or independent build-versus-buy performance benchmarks are established here. Treat those as proposal-specific questions and compare written terms against the same requirements.
