Your AI product should treat language support as a core access decision, not just an interface translation. OpenAI reports that adults who predominantly use a language other than English make up over half of ChatGPT’s active users—but that product-specific finding does not predict which market will bring another million users to your service. To choose where to invest, start with the languages your users need, the tasks they want to complete, and how well your product can support those tasks.

Why multilingual support matters for AI products

There is already substantial demand for AI use outside English. OpenAI’s 2026 analysis says users who predominantly use a language other than English represent over half of active ChatGPT users. Its measure covers adult users active in a seven-day window, with a user’s primary language determined by the plurality of their messages. It is evidence about ChatGPT—not a count of all AI users, a forecast for another product, or proof of revenue potential in a particular market. OpenAI’s analysis lists Spanish, Portuguese, and Arabic as the leading non-English languages. Among languages with at least one million active users in June 2026, Uzbek, Kazakh, and Burmese had the largest increases in their share of active users since July 2023.

Access remains uneven. UNESCO estimates that around 7,000 languages are still in use, while around 1,000 are represented online. Representation does not mean that a language has abundant content, strong AI performance, or full product support. A 2025 UNESCO/ITU WSIS Forum session outcome document says over 90% of the world’s 7,000-plus languages are “underrepresented or absent” online; that is the document’s reported framing, not a standalone audited census. UNESCO’s Multilingualism in Cyberspace page also notes that its Recommendation on multilingualism and universal access to cyberspace was adopted in 2003.

For an AI product, the practical implication is to find out which languages your users need and whether your product can serve their actual tasks in those languages. The evidence supports an access and usage rationale for multilingual work; it does not establish that localization alone will produce a specific number of customers.

What it means to make an AI product multilingual

A translated menu is only one part of language support. ITU defines multilingualism as both individuals’ ability and organizations’ capacity to communicate and work across languages, in speech and writing. For a product team, that distinction means considering the user experience as well as the organization’s ability to support users across languages. ITU’s multilingualism overview gives the institutional definition.

UNESCO identifies machine translation, speech recognition, and natural language processing as language technologies that can strengthen languages’ digital presence, including that of low-resource and endangered languages. These are possible capabilities to consider, not evidence that every tool handles every language equally well. UNESCO’s Global Roadmap for Multilingualism in the Digital Era describes AI and other emerging technologies as reshaping multilingualism, while emphasizing the broader digital context.

How to choose which languages to support first

  1. Start with user evidence. Identify the languages people already use with your product or request in support conversations, research, and feedback. If you are targeting a new market, validate its language needs directly rather than choosing a language based only on global popularity.
  2. Map languages to tasks. List the actions users need to perform—such as reading instructions, entering a prompt, understanding a response, or speaking to the product. A language may be a priority for text interaction but not yet ready for a speech feature.
  3. Check scripts and modalities. Confirm that the experience works with the relevant writing systems and the specific capabilities required, such as text generation, translation, or speech recognition. “Supports a language” is too broad unless you define what users can do in it.
  4. Evaluate quality for the intended use. Assess the experience in the target language and task. The institutional sources cited here do not provide a vendor-neutral benchmark or language-by-language performance comparison, so they cannot establish which provider performs best.
  5. Plan for operational support. Consider whether your organization can handle onboarding, help content, user feedback, and ongoing product communication in the languages you offer. User-facing localization without a way to support users can leave important needs unmet.

Why translating the interface is not enough

Localization can make buttons and instructions understandable, but AI products also depend on the quality of language input and output. A translated interface does not by itself show that a system can understand a user’s phrasing, recognize their speech, or return a useful answer in that language. Treat each capability as a distinct product requirement, and evaluate it against the task users need to complete.

This distinction matters especially for less digitally represented languages. UNESCO’s approximate count of around 1,000 languages represented online should not be read as a measure of how well those languages are served. The UNESCO/ITU session outcome document’s “underrepresented or absent” wording further points to gaps in online visibility; neither source establishes equal AI quality across languages.

Does a multilingual AI product guarantee more growth?

No. The available evidence shows that non-English use is substantial on ChatGPT and that online language representation is uneven. It does not quantify how much localization changes conversion, retention, or revenue for another AI product. Nor does it show that Uzbek, Kazakh, Burmese, or any other language will deliver a particular company’s next million users. Treat language selection as a product and market hypothesis to validate with your own users, not as a guaranteed growth lever.
