If your new monitor is showing 60Hz instead of 144Hz—or another rate you expected—first check the active refresh rate for that display in Windows. Go to Settings > System > Display > Advanced display, select the monitor, and choose the rate you want if it is listed. If it is missing, the limit may be the chosen resolution or any part of the connection path: the graphics output, monitor input, cable, adapter, or dock.
Check the active refresh rate for the right display
- Open Settings > System > Display > Advanced display.
- If you have more than one display, use the display selector to choose the new monitor.
- Check its current resolution and refresh rate. Open the refresh-rate menu and select your intended rate if it is available.
Windows lists rates according to what the display and connected setup support. As Microsoft explains, “The refresh rates that appear depend on your display and what it supports.” Microsoft’s refresh-rate instructions also note that a rate marked with an asterisk does not support the current resolution; choosing it changes the resolution. The highest number in the menu therefore is not necessarily available at every resolution.
Check Dynamic Refresh Rate if a game seems capped
Windows 11’s Dynamic Refresh Rate (DRR) adjusts refresh rate according to activity and is available only on compatible hardware. Microsoft says it requires a compatible display with variable refresh rate (VRR) and a refresh rate of at least 120Hz. It also warns that DRR can limit the maximum refresh rate of some games. If Windows shows the expected rate but a game appears to run lower, test with DRR turned off and inspect the game’s own display settings. Microsoft’s DRR overview explains the feature and its requirements.

A monitor’s available modes depend on the whole connection, not just the screen’s advertised maximum. A dock or adapter can narrow the modes available between the computer and monitor, and different inputs on the same monitor may support different capabilities. Try these checks before buying anything:
#1 Best Overall
- QHD Resolution (2560 x 1440) has 1.7 times the pixel density of Full HD for incredibly detailed pinsharp images
- HDR10 provides brighter highlights and nuanced shadow for added depth - making every scene feel more vivid and realistic
- The 180Hz refresh rate minimizes lag for gameplay with ultra-smooth action. Plus, the 1ms response time helps capture your moves in real-time, allowing you to react fast for gaming precision
- AMD FreeSync reduces choppiness, screen lag and image tearing, ensuring that your fast-paced, complex in-game action is stable with minimal stutter
- Ergonomic stand allows for tilt, pivot and height adjustments to maximize gaming comfort
- Reseat both ends of the video cable.
- Temporarily remove docks, dongles, and adapters; connect the monitor directly to the computer if possible.
- Try another graphics output and another suitable cable.
- Connect the monitor to another computer, if available, to see whether the issue follows the monitor or the original system.
These isolation steps align with Microsoft’s external-monitor troubleshooting guidance and its USB-C troubleshooting guidance.
Match the connection to your target resolution and rate
Check the specifications or manual for the exact graphics output and monitor input you are using. Confirm they support your target resolution and refresh rate together, then account for every intervening dock, adapter, or USB-C alternate-mode connection. Connector names alone do not establish support for a particular mode; color depth and HDR requirements can also matter.

For example, VESA says DisplayPort 2.1b was announced in January 2025 and specifies a maximum payload of 77.37Gbps. Its FAQ describes example configurations, including one 8K (7680 × 4320) display at 60Hz with 30 bits per pixel and 4:4:4 color using HDR-10. Those are standard capabilities, not a guarantee that every DisplayPort 2.1b monitor or graphics card supports every listed configuration. VESA advises users seeking full UHBR20 performance with compatible equipment to look for VESA-certified DP80 cables. See VESA’s DisplayPort FAQ.
HDMI Licensing Administrator describes HDMI 2.2 as supporting 96Gbps bandwidth and calls for Ultra High Speed HDMI or Ultra96 HDMI cables for performance and compatibility with those modes. That specification capability does not guarantee a particular result with a given monitor, cable, or graphics card. Check the exact endpoints and required mode rather than buying a cable based only on a version label. See HDMI Licensing Administrator’s HDMI 2.2 page.

Decide whether the remaining limit is configuration or hardware
If your desired rate is missing at the monitor’s supported resolution even after a direct connection and tests with an appropriate cable and output, check the documented limits of the specific monitor input, graphics output, and any adapter or dock. The missing-rate symptom alone cannot identify which component is responsible. Narrowing it down requires the monitor and graphics hardware model numbers, the target resolution and refresh rate, and the complete connection chain.
Replace a cable only if testing shows it is faulty or its documented capability does not cover the verified mode. Consider replacing a monitor only if its documented input modes cannot meet your goal; an advertised maximum does not establish that every input or resolution supports that rate.
