Your organization’s real internet-facing attack surface is not just the systems on its asset list. It is everything a remote observer can still discover and reach—including an old staging host, a forgotten subdomain, an exposed database, or a remote-access service left online after its project ended.
That outside view can differ from what your team intended to publish. Finding those systems requires discovery and verification: a historical certificate record may reveal a hostname, but only current DNS and reachability checks can show whether it is still exposed.
Why forgotten systems remain part of your attack surface
Temporary systems often outlive the people and projects that created them. A staging site, test database, or remote-access endpoint may remain publicly reachable even after it disappears from internal documentation. From an attacker’s perspective, the intention behind a system does not change what can be reached from the internet.

This is why an inventory maintained from the inside can be incomplete: it records what the organization knows it owns, while an outside-in view asks what a remote observer can find now. Neither view replaces the other. Together they help identify mismatches between the intended footprint and the reachable one.

How Certificate Transparency helps find forgotten hostnames
Certificate Transparency (CT) makes certificate issuance publicly verifiable. Its public logs let people monitor which certificate authorities issued certificates, when they did so, and which domain names those certificates covered. Those records can surface hostnames that an organization no longer remembers; see the Certificate Transparency project overview.
A CT entry is a clue, not proof of current exposure. It records a certificate issued for a name; it does not establish that the name still resolves, that a service is running, that the organization still controls its destination, or that the service has a vulnerability. Discovery tools can combine CT records with DNS checks to distinguish historical names from names that currently resolve.

- HARDWARE PLUS SECURITY SERVICES: FortiGate-60F Firewall Appliance bundled with 1 year of FortiCare Premium and FortiGuard Unified Threat Protection.
- UNIFIED THREAT PROTECTION (UTP): Secures against advanced online threats with comprehensive web filtering and anti-botnet technologies.
- OPTIMIZED FOR MEDIUM-SIZED BUSINESSES: Tailored for businesses needing robust security without the infrastructure of larger enterprises.
- RELIABLE CUSTOMER SUPPORT: FortiCare Premium ensures high-quality support and service continuity.
- EFFECTIVE PROTECTION: Employs advanced filtering technologies to safeguard against sophisticated threats.
CT coverage also has limits. For example, a wildcard certificate can cover subdomains without listing each hostname individually in CT. A small number of CT-derived names therefore does not prove that an organization has a small attack surface.

What an outside-in exposure check can show
Attack Surface Monitor’s official repository describes a workflow that discovers names using CT and DNS, retains names that resolve as live assets, and performs active probing only after the operator verifies control of the domain. It lists checks for reachable databases such as PostgreSQL, MySQL, MongoDB, Redis, and Elasticsearch; remote-access services such as RDP, VNC, and Telnet; and open ports. Its scans are compared over time so newly discovered hosts or ports can become findings, while closed ports or removed assets can be resolved. See the Attack Surface Monitor repository for its documented behavior.

- 【Up to 1100 Mbps VPN Speed 】 Hardware-accelerated WireGuard and OpenVPN-DCO deliver up to 1100 Mbps VPN throughput, over 3× faster than Brume 2 for smooth remote access and file transfers.
- 【Three 2.5G Ports & Multi-WAN】Tri-port 2.5GbE design with flexible WAN LAN configuration supports multi-gigabit wired setups, dual-ISP Multi-WAN and failover to keep home and SOHO networks online.
- 【Stealth VPN Obfuscation】VPN obfuscation disguises VPN traffic as regular HTTPS, helping you evade blocking, bypass restrictive networks and maintain stable, private connections.
- 【DPI protection】Deep Packet Inspection with visual dashboards blocks adult/gambling/malicious sites, while SQM and QoS prioritize gaming, calls, and video when bandwidth is tight
- 【OpenWrt & USB 3.0 Expansion】OpenWrt with 1GB DDR4 and 8GB eMMC lets you install plugins and build VPN, ad-blocking or NAS, while USB 3.0 Type‑C connects high-speed storage or 4G/5G dongles
Exposure discovery is not vulnerability assessment. A reachable service or open port shows that something answers from the scanner’s vantage point; it does not prove the service is exploitable or that it has been compromised. The repository explicitly distinguishes the question “what is reachable?” from whether a service can be exploited. Use a vulnerability scanner for that separate assessment.
Where external discovery can miss assets
- Missing public records: A hostname absent from CT and the DNS sources used by a tool may not be discovered.
- Wildcard certificates: A wildcard certificate may cover names without listing each subdomain individually in CT.
- Limited vantage point: An external scan sees only what is reachable from where it runs. Internal-only systems require a suitably placed internal scan.
- Historical names: A certificate record can remain useful for discovery, but a name must be checked for current DNS resolution and reachability before treating it as a live exposure.
For these reasons, a low count is not a reliable measure of completeness. Compare external findings with internal inventories, cloud and DNS records, and scans performed from the appropriate network locations.

How to use exposure monitoring safely
- Start with domains you control. Use a discovery service only for domains and systems you own or are expressly authorized to test.
- Verify control before active probing. Attack Surface Monitor’s repository says operators must prove domain control using a DNS TXT record or an HTTP file before active checks begin.
- Review hosting-provider rules. Some cloud providers may require advance notice before security testing. Check the applicable terms before probing hosted infrastructure.
- Validate each finding. Confirm that the hostname resolves and the service is reachable, then determine whether it is expected and who is responsible for it.
- Assess vulnerabilities separately. Treat reachability as an inventory and exposure finding, not as proof of exploitability or compromise.
- Track changes over time. Repeated scans can reveal newly reachable hosts or ports and show when previously observed exposure disappears.
Attack Surface Monitor: documented editions and limits
Attack Surface Monitor is a self-hosted discovery and exposure-monitoring project. Its repository says asset lists and findings remain on the user’s network. The README snapshot reviewed documents these tiers and features; pricing and limits can change, so check the repository for current terms before choosing an edition.
| Edition | Monitored domains | Scan options | History | Notifications | Support |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Free | 1 | Weekly fixed scans | 14 days | Community-level notifications, as described in the repository | Community |
| Pro | 10 | Custom scans and scan-now | 1 year | Email notifications, as described in the repository | |
| Team | Unlimited | Custom scans and scan-now | Unlimited | Additional notification options, as described in the repository | Priority |
The repository snapshot lists Free as a no-time-limit option under the Apache-2.0 edition, and documents 14-day trials for Pro and Team. It lists Pro at $29 per month and Team at $99 per month; these are vendor-published figures in that snapshot, not guaranteed current prices.
