If you already have a phone and want a separate, compact screen for reading, games, notes, or video, the 128GB iPad mini (A17 Pro) is the more relevant buy: it was reported at $499 during Prime Day, $100 below its $599 former price. That deal is time-sensitive, so check Amazon’s live price and eligibility before buying. The iPhone Duo is a different proposition: a foldable phone that opens into a larger display, not a tablet substitute.
What the iPad mini deal includes
Tom’s Guide reported on October 5, 2026, that Amazon had the 128GB iPad mini 7 for $499, down from $599. Macworld’s October 6 U.S. Prime Day guide also listed the 128GB model at $499. These are dated reports, not a guarantee that the price, stock, or promotion is still available.
Tom’s Guide listed the larger storage options at $599 for 256GB (formerly $699) and $799 for 512GB (formerly $899). The reported $100 reductions applied to each of those tiers as well. Check the listing for the current price, stock, Prime Day eligibility, and promotion end time before placing an order.

Apple identifies this model as iPad mini (A17 Pro). Its specifications include an 8.3-inch Liquid Retina display, the A17 Pro chip, and 128GB, 256GB, or 512GB storage configurations. Apple rates battery life at up to 10 hours of Wi‑Fi web browsing or video playback; that is a manufacturer rating, not a guaranteed result for every use pattern. The model supports Apple Pencil Pro and Apple Pencil (USB‑C), sold separately.
#1 Best Overall

- APPLE INTELLIGENCE — Apple Intelligence is the personal intelligence system that helps you write, express yourself, and get things done effortlessly.* With groundbreaking privacy protections, it gives you peace of mind that no one else can access your data — not even Apple. (Coming fall 2024.)
- 8.3-INCH LIQUID RETINA DISPLAY — The gorgeous Liquid Retina display features advanced technologies like P3 wide color, True Tone, and ultralow reflectivity, which make everything look stunning.*
- PERFORMANCE AND STORAGE — The A17 Pro chip delivers powerful performance and ultrafast graphics. And with all-day battery life, iPad mini is always ready for any task or project.* Storage starting at 128GB for all your apps, music, movies, and more.*
- IPADOS + APPS — iPadOS makes iPad more productive, intuitive, and versatile. With iPadOS, run multiple apps at once, use Apple Pencil to write in any text field with Scribble, and edit and share photos. iPad mini comes with essential apps like Safari, Messages, and Keynote, with over a million more apps available on the App Store.
That combination makes the mini a dedicated compact tablet: a screen larger than a phone for reading, streaming, portable games, or handwriting and markup. Pencil support is useful if you plan to take notes, annotate documents, or draw, but it is an additional purchase rather than part of the tablet deal.
How the iPhone Duo differs
Apple announced iPhone Duo on September 9, 2026, describing it as its first foldable iPhone. Apple lists a 5.4-inch outer display for use while folded and a 7.6-inch inner display when opened, along with the A20 Pro chip. Preorders are scheduled to begin October 16, with availability beginning October 23; as of October 7, those dates are still in the future.

- 11-INCH LIQUID RETINA DISPLAY — The gorgeous Liquid Retina display is an amazing way to watch movies or draw your next masterpiece.* True Tone adjusts the display to the color temperature of the room to make viewing comfortable in any light.
- IPADOS + APPS — iPadOS makes iPad more productive, intuitive, and versatile. With iPadOS, run multiple apps at once, use Apple Pencil to write in any text field with Scribble, and edit and share photos.* iPad comes with essential apps like Safari, Messages, and Keynote, with over a million more apps designed specifically for iPad available on the App Store.
- FAST WI-FI CONNECTIVITY — Wi-Fi 6 gives you fast access to your files, uploads, and downloads, and lets you seamlessly stream your favorite shows.
The distinction is the role of each device. The mini is a second device to use alongside a phone. The Duo is a phone designed to open into a larger screen. If your current phone works well and you want a small tablet, the mini addresses that need without requiring a phone replacement. If you need a new phone and specifically want a foldable screen, the Duo belongs in that comparison instead.
Tom’s Guide described the Duo as a $2,000 device in its October 5 deal article. The Apple announcement reviewed here did not state a price, so treat that figure as Tom’s Guide’s reported price rather than a confirmed Apple Store price. Check Apple’s current listing before relying on it for a purchase decision.

Which one makes sense for you?
| Consideration | iPad mini (A17 Pro) | iPhone Duo |
|---|---|---|
| Main role | Compact tablet used alongside a phone | Foldable phone with a larger screen when opened |
| Display | 8.3 inches | 5.4-inch outer and 7.6-inch inner displays |
| Price evidence | $499 reported for 128GB at Amazon during U.S. Prime Day; live price may differ | $2,000 reported by Tom’s Guide; not stated in the Apple announcement reviewed here |
| Timing | Existing product; deal reported October 5, 2026 | Preorders scheduled for October 16 and availability for October 23, 2026 |
| Best fit | You want a separate, smaller tablet at the reported sale price | You want a foldable phone and plan to use its unfolded screen |
Those prices do not compare like-for-like if you need to replace your phone: a mini does not include phone service or replace a phone, while Duo is being positioned as a phone. If you already own a suitable phone, the mini’s reported price is easier to assess as the cost of adding a tablet.

Macworld reported that a new iPad mini could arrive later in October and might include an OLED display and a newer processor. That is reporting about a possible refresh, not an Apple announcement or confirmed release date. If having the latest display or chip matters more than buying during this deal, waiting may be reasonable; if the current model meets your needs, do not treat the rumored timing or specifications as certain.
