Yes—you can try ChatGPT without creating an account by opening chatgpt.com in a web browser, typing a prompt, and sending it. This official logged-out experience is available in supported regions, but it has important limitations: you can use only one conversation at a time, your chat is not saved to account history, and your signed-out conversations are used to improve models by default unless you turn that setting off.
This guide explains how to start a chat, use ChatGPT Search, protect sensitive information, save anything important manually, and recognize when signing in is necessary.
The short answer
To use ChatGPT without an account:
- Open chatgpt.com in a browser.
- Do not choose Log in or Sign up.
- Click or tap the message box.
- Enter your question or instruction and send it.
You can ask follow-up questions in the same conversation because ChatGPT keeps the context of that thread. However, OpenAI currently supports only one logged-out conversation at a time. If you choose New Chat, the existing no-account conversation becomes inaccessible through that session.

How to use ChatGPT without signing up
- Go to chatgpt.com. Use the web version rather than assuming that the same logged-out experience is available in every app or device interface.
- Leave the sign-in options alone. If the page lets you see the composer without signing in, you can continue as a logged-out user.
- Enter a prompt. For example, ask ChatGPT to explain a technical term, rewrite a paragraph, brainstorm ideas, or summarize text that you paste into the message box.
- Send the prompt. ChatGPT will return an answer in the current thread.
- Continue with follow-ups. You can ask questions such as “Can you make that shorter?” or “Give me an example,” without repeating the entire original prompt.
- Copy anything you need to keep. The conversation is not added to a persistent account history while you remain signed out.
The biggest limitation: only one conversation at a time
Logged-out access is useful for a quick task, but it is not an anonymous replacement for a full ChatGPT account. You can have several exchanges in the same thread, but you cannot maintain multiple independent conversations in a saved sidebar while signed out.
Starting a new chat makes the current logged-out thread inaccessible. The same can happen if the browser session ends, you switch browsers or devices, or you clear the site’s cookies and other browsing data. Do not assume that the text has been permanently deleted from OpenAI’s systems simply because it is no longer visible to you; the documented limitation is that it is not available in your user history.
If you later create an account, OpenAI says the latest conversation may appear in the sidebar, but older previous conversations cannot be saved. If the answer matters, copy it into a document, note-taking app, or email before leaving the page.
Can you use ChatGPT Search without an account?
Yes. OpenAI’s ChatGPT Search documentation says logged-out Free users can use Search, subject to applicable usage limits. Search is useful when you need current information rather than a response based only on the model’s existing knowledge.
To start a search manually:
- Open chatgpt.com.
- In the message composer, select View all tools.
- Choose Search.
- Enter your question and send it.
Depending on the interface, you can also type / in the composer and select Search. ChatGPT may search automatically when it determines that a question would benefit from current web information, but do not assume that every answer used the web. For news, prices, schedules, product availability, laws, or other changing facts, explicitly select Search and inspect the links or the Sources panel when it appears.
Search and privacy
Search has additional data-handling considerations. OpenAI says ChatGPT Search may rewrite your question and send the rewritten query to search providers. It may also use general location inferred from your IP address to improve local results. OpenAI says it does not share your IP address itself or your ChatGPT account information with those third-party search providers for this purpose. Precise device location is optional and is not required to use Search.

Even with Search enabled, check the cited pages yourself. A source link shows where information came from; it does not guarantee that the answer interpreted the source correctly or that the source is still current.
Privacy: signed-out chats are used for training by default
Using ChatGPT without an account does not automatically mean that your conversation is private, anonymous, or excluded from model improvement. OpenAI’s current home-page documentation says signed-out chats are used to train models by default. It also recommends that users avoid sharing sensitive information.
If you want to opt out while using ChatGPT signed out, follow this path on the website:
- Select the ? icon in the bottom-right corner.
- Choose Settings.
- Turn off Improve the model for everyone.
OpenAI also documents this control in its Data Controls FAQ. For a logged-out session, the choice is tied to the browser. It can reset if you clear cookies, change browsers, or move to another device, so check the setting again wherever you use ChatGPT without signing in.
Turning off Improve the model for everyone is not the same as deleting the conversation, making it anonymous, or enabling Temporary Chat. It controls whether new conversations are used to improve models according to OpenAI’s stated data controls; do not interpret it as a guarantee of immediate deletion.
Do not enter sensitive information
Regardless of the training setting, avoid putting information into a logged-out chat that you would not want processed by an online service. In particular, do not enter:
- Passwords, authentication codes, recovery keys, or security answers
- Social Security numbers, passport details, or other government-identification numbers
- Bank, payment-card, or financial-account credentials
- Confidential employer, client, legal, or business information
- Private medical information unless you understand the risks and applicable policies
- Any personal information that is unnecessary for answering the question
When possible, replace names, account numbers, addresses, and other identifying details with fictional placeholders before pasting text into ChatGPT.

What can and cannot be done without an account?
The basic logged-out path is text chat. Other ChatGPT features can have separate requirements based on authentication, plan, region, rollout, and the interface you are using.

OpenAI’s general ChatGPT FAQ discusses capabilities such as uploads, but that does not mean every capability is available to a logged-out visitor. If the composer visibly offers an additional tool, it may still ask you to sign in before use.
No account versus Temporary Chat
These are different privacy and access choices:
- Logged out: You do not create or use an account, can have one conversation at a time, do not get persistent chat history, and have model-improvement sharing enabled by default unless you turn it off.
- Temporary Chat: You must be signed in to use this separate account feature. According to OpenAI’s Temporary Chat FAQ, Temporary Chats do not appear in history, do not create or use memories, and are not used to improve models. OpenAI may retain a copy for up to 30 days for safety purposes.
Therefore, turning off model improvement in a logged-out session does not convert that session into Temporary Chat. Conversely, Temporary Chat is not the way to obtain no-account access; it requires an account.
Why ChatGPT may ask you to sign in immediately
If you see a sign-in wall instead of a usable prompt box, that does not necessarily mean that OpenAI has removed no-account access everywhere. Common explanations include:
- The logged-out feature is not available in your location.
- You are using an app, product surface, or embedded experience that requires authentication.
- The particular tool you selected requires a signed-in user.
- The feature is being rolled out, changed, rate-limited, or temporarily unavailable.
OpenAI’s home-page help article says logged-out access is still subject to regional rollout and is not yet available in Europe except the United Kingdom. This is narrower than saying ChatGPT itself is unavailable in Europe: OpenAI’s separate supported-countries page lists many European countries for ChatGPT generally.

When creating an account is worth it
Stay logged out when you have a one-off question, want to test ChatGPT before registering, need a quick text rewrite, or are comfortable copying the result manually.

Create an account if you need any of the following:
- Persistent history: Return to previous conversations instead of losing them when the session ends.
- Continuity across devices: Start on one computer or phone and continue elsewhere.
- Sharing and export: Use account-based features to share chats or manage your data.
- Personalization: Use custom instructions and other account-level settings where available.
- More tools: Access features that require authentication, a particular plan, or a supported account experience.
- Centralized controls: Manage settings at the account level instead of repeating browser-specific choices on each device.
An account does not remove the need to review privacy settings or avoid sharing secrets. It mainly gives you continuity, history, and access to account-managed features.
Troubleshooting no-account ChatGPT
“I cannot find the prompt box.”
- Confirm that you are on the official chatgpt.com website.
- Refresh the page and check whether a sign-in dialog is covering the composer.
- If the site immediately requires an account, the logged-out feature may not be available in your region or on that particular interface.
- Review OpenAI’s current supported-country information, but do not attempt to evade regional restrictions.
“My old conversation disappeared.”
Possible causes include selecting New Chat, ending the browser session, switching browsers or devices, clearing cookies or site data, or leaving the page without copying the answer. Logged-out chats do not have persistent account history. If you need reliable recovery, sign in before starting important work.
“I was asked to sign in after ChatGPT was working.”
You may have selected a tool that requires authentication, reached a regional or product limitation, or encountered an interface change. The basic text-chat experience does not guarantee access to every feature available to Free account holders.
“The Search option is missing.”
Look for View all tools in the composer, or type / and look for Search. If neither option appears, Search may not be available in that interface, region, rollout, or current session. You can ask ChatGPT to search, but explicitly selecting the tool is the more reliable way to request current web information.
“I turned off model improvement, but it turned back on.”
For signed-out use, OpenAI says the setting is tied to the browser and resets when you clear cookies or switch browsers or devices. Repeat ? → Settings → turn off Improve the model for everyone on each browser or device where you need the preference.
“I need OpenAI customer support.”
OpenAI’s home-page help documentation says you should create an account or log in to contact support through the Help Center chat tool. A logged-out user should not assume that the full support workflow is available.

What model does no-account ChatGPT use?
Do not rely on a fixed model name when using ChatGPT without an account. OpenAI changes default models, usage limits, and fallback behavior over time, and the model shown to a logged-out visitor may vary. The durable expectation is that the no-account experience uses the currently available ChatGPT model selected by OpenAI for that experience. Check the interface and OpenAI’s release notes for current changes rather than treating an old model name as a permanent feature.

Can I use ChatGPT without an account on my phone?
The clearest officially documented no-account path is the web at chatgpt.com. Do not assume that the mobile app or every mobile interface supports logged-out use; if it asks you to sign in, use the web experience or create an account.
Can I recover a ChatGPT conversation I started while signed out?
Do not count on recovery. A logged-out conversation is available only in the current session on the same browser and is not placed in persistent history. Copy important answers before selecting New Chat, closing the session, clearing site data, or switching devices.

Does using ChatGPT without an account make my chats private?
