Yes, but only as a community-built virtual machine on Apple Silicon Macs. The open-source gbos-vm project adapts Google’s Dell Googlebook recovery image so it boots as an ARM guest in a GPU-accelerated VM on macOS. It is not an official Google or Dell product, and the project’s maintainer says it is not a verified Googlebook. Android Authority covered the project on October 8, 2026, describing it as an experimental preview.
What gbos-vm actually does
The installer downloads a real Googlebook recovery image and virtual-device components from Google’s Cuttlefish project. It then rebuilds the image’s vendor partition, replacing hardware-only parts with virtual equivalents. QEMU and graphics components pass Vulkan rendering through MoltenVK to Metal, which is how the guest uses the Mac’s GPU. The result is a Googlebook OS image running inside a VM, not a Mac port of the operating system, and not a generic Android build.
Because the vendor partition is modified, the result is a project-specific adaptation with its own limits. The sections below cover what you need, how to install it, what breaks, and why it should stay in a sandbox.
Mac requirements
Apple Silicon is mandatory. Intel Macs are explicitly unsupported, because the ARM guest runs on the host’s hypervisor rather than being emulated. The table lists the requirements documented in the project README as of October 8, 2026.

Tested configurations are limited. The maintainer reports building and testing on an M5 Mac with 16 GB of RAM running macOS 27, and mentions a couple of reports from M4 Macs. These are individual reports, not a broad compatibility test, so treat any Apple Silicon Mac as unconfirmed until it works for you.
Installing it step by step
- Install the prerequisites in the table above: Xcode command line tools, Homebrew, the Android SDK with the NDK version listed, build tools, and a JDK.
- Clone the repository and enter the folder:
git clone https://github.com/skylartaylor/gbos-vm.git cd gbos-vm - Run
./install.sh. The script downloads its inputs on your machine and checks each against pinned SHA-256 hashes. The project does not redistribute Google’s or UTM’s binaries. The README’s snapshot lists the Googlebook recovery image (build 16471258), the Cuttlefish virtual device image (build 16373615), UTM 5.0.6 beta, Mesa 26.2.4, libsepol 3.11 and bison 3.8.2. - Open the app from the repository folder:
open "work/host/Googlebook VM.app", or double-click Googlebook VM.app inside work/host. - In the app, set pointer mode, resolution, memory, CPU cores, networking and audio. The README also documents keyboard shortcuts; check the live file for the current list.
Guest data persists in work/image/googlebook.raw, so that file is the one to keep track of if you want to preserve what you set up. The README notes the workspace can be relocated through configuration.

What works and what does not
The project’s README lists current limitations. They are specific, and they matter more than the GPU acceleration headline.
- Bluetooth crashes on boot.
- TPM daemon crash-loops and uses some CPU.
- Display output is capped at 60 fps, according to the maintainer.
- WebGL content using
flatinterpolation may render incorrectly. - Copying out of the guest, right-click behavior and long sessions have not been properly tested.
- Audio was silent on one boot and later worked.
- Pointer modes include experimental options.
If you depend on Bluetooth peripherals, smooth high-refresh display, or multi-hour sessions, this build is not ready for that work.

Security: a development VM, not a protected device
The OS expects hardware the VM does not have, including a TPM, Trusty, a Qualcomm DSP and a particular GPU. The maintainer says software KeyMint and Gatekeeper stand in for the hardware-backed services, and the modified vendor partition cannot provide verified boot. The protections you would expect from a retail Googlebook therefore do not carry over.
The README’s own guidance is blunt. Its identity notice reads: “This isn’t affiliated with Google or Dell, and it’s not a verified Googlebook. Read System Structure before you sign into anything.” Its security section adds: “So: treat it like a dev VM.” In practice, avoid signing into accounts or storing data you could not afford to expose or lose.

Who should try it
This project suits developers and curious Mac users who are comfortable installing build tools, have an Apple Silicon Mac with at least 16 GB of RAM and at least 60 GB free, and accept that parts of the system are broken or untested. It is a reasonable way to explore Googlebook OS without buying the hardware.
