Some Android handhelds can now boot a community-made ARM port of SteamOS, giving them a Steam Deck-style interface and access to some Steam games. The clearest hands-on proof so far is one Android Authority test on an AYN Odin 2 Portal. The early results were mixed, and the port is unofficial: this is an experiment for selected devices, not a Steam Deck replacement or a Valve-supported feature.
What “turning an Android handheld into a Steam Deck” actually means
A community port adapts an ARM version of SteamOS for selected Android handhelds. In a September 30, 2026 report, Android Authority’s Hadlee Simons successfully booted the MaSieS4Fun variant on an AYN Odin 2 Portal. The device remained an Android handheld; booting the port provided a SteamOS-like way to try Steam games, not the hardware, software support, or guaranteed compatibility of a Valve Steam Deck. Android Authority’s report does not establish official Valve support.
Which handhelds were listed, and which one was tested?
Android Authority named the following devices as supported by the community ports. That list is the report’s compatibility claim, not a hands-on verification of every model; the author specifically tested the AYN Odin 2 Portal.

How the reported microSD boot worked
The author’s route used Rocknix ABL, a PC, Rufus, and a microSD card. Booting from the card let the author try the system without wiping the handheld’s internal storage. This is the reported procedure, not a universal, device-by-device installation guide.
- Install Rocknix ABL first, as required by the reported setup. ROCKNIX describes itself as an immutable Linux distribution for handheld gaming devices, focused on retro emulation; its wiki describes features including performance and power profiles, Bluetooth audio and controller connections, and HDMI/USB output. Those project features do not independently confirm compatibility of the separate SteamOS ports.
- Unzip the SteamOS image on a PC.
- Use Rufus to write the image to a microSD card. The report gives no required card capacity, speed rating, or model.
- Boot the handheld from the card to try the system while leaving internal storage unwiped in the reported test.
Because the available account does not document recovery steps or support for every device, do not assume that the same boot procedure is safe or identical across all listed models. Verify model-specific instructions before changing boot settings or installing anything.

What happened when the author tried five games
Simons tested a small sample of five games on the AYN Odin 2 Portal. The results show that a game launching is not guaranteed, and that settings such as the Proton version may matter.

Should you try this port or use an Android app?
If you already own a listed handheld and are comfortable following model-specific community instructions, the port may be worth exploring as an early experiment. The reported card-based boot avoided wiping internal storage in the author’s setup, but that does not remove the need to verify instructions for your own model.
For readers whose main goal is simply playing PC games on Android, Simons wrote that he would “tentatively” favor apps such as GameNative, GameHub, and Winlator Ludashi for now. That is the author’s judgment, not a comparative benchmark or universal recommendation. A useful comparison depends on whether games run locally or stream, device and build compatibility, game-by-game performance, installation complexity, storage risk, and network needs; the report does not provide enough data to rank those options across those factors.
