A yes/no wheel can land on the same answer several times in a row without being rigged. If each spin is independent and the wheel gives yes and no equal chances, the next spin still has a 50% chance of either result, whatever the previous spins showed. A streak alone is not evidence of tampering—but unequal sectors, a faulty pointer, or changing spin conditions can make the wheel biased.
Why a fair yes/no wheel can produce a streak
Independence means one spin does not affect another. Under that model, the wheel has no memory: after three yes results, the next spin is no more likely to be no than it was before the streak. Milad Haghani, writing for The Conversation in an article hosted by UNSW Sydney, describes independence as one event not influencing another. Read the explanation of streaks and randomness.
This is different from saying that every possible sequence is equally likely to be noticed in advance. A particular long run can seem surprising when imagined beforehand. Once it has happened, though, that past run does not change the probability of the next independent spin.
Three common mistakes when judging a streak
Expecting the wheel to balance out immediately
Random outcomes do not have to alternate neatly or even out over a short stretch. A run of yes results does not create a requirement for the wheel to produce extra no results next. Penn State’s introductory statistics material uses roulette to illustrate this no-memory idea; its page should be treated as a teaching resource rather than as evidence about any particular yes/no wheel. See Penn State’s lesson on sample diversity.

Confusing a rare past with a changed future
“How surprising was that run?” and “What is likely on the next spin?” are separate questions. Do not use the probability of a particular streak occurring from the beginning as though it were the probability that the next spin will reverse it. For independent spins, the next result keeps its original chances.
Assuming every streak is either meaningless or predictive
The fair-wheel model applies when conditions stay the same and spins do not influence one another. It should not be transferred automatically to a mechanical process that changes, a wheel with unequal sections, or a skill-based activity. Haghani’s overview describes evidence about the hot hand as context-dependent: apparent streaks can be interpreted differently when skill or changing circumstances may affect outcomes. Read Haghani’s discussion of the hot hand and gambler’s fallacy.

How to check whether a wheel may be biased
Before calling a wheel rigged, check the mechanism and the assumptions behind the 50/50 model. A streak is an observation; it is not, by itself, an explanation for why it happened.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Sector size and labels: Check whether yes and no occupy equal areas. Unequal areas mean the expected chances may not be 50/50.
- Pointer and movement: See whether the pointer settles consistently and whether the wheel spins freely rather than catching or favoring a position.
- Consistent conditions: Compare spins made in the same way. If the way the wheel is spun or its physical condition changes, earlier and later trials may not be comparable.
- Number of recorded spins: Record outcomes rather than relying on a memorable run. A short sequence can cluster by chance, and a run noticed after looking through many results can seem more remarkable than a pattern chosen in advance.
- Alternative explanations: Ordinary clustering, unequal sectors, a changing mechanism, and genuine bias are different possibilities. More observations under consistent conditions help distinguish them.
These checks establish whether an independent, equal-chance model is plausible; they do not prove that a particular wheel is fair or faulty.

A simple way to see streaks without assuming they are forced
Simulate repeated coin tosses or wheel spins and record the results in order. Mark every run of three identical outcomes, then inspect what comes next. The point is not to make the next outcome reverse: it is to see that a streak can occur while the next independent trial remains free to go either way.
Texas Instruments’ classroom activity has students simulate 100 coin tosses, record streaks of three, and consider whether each toss is independent. A companion activity examines the longest streak in seven tosses and compares simulation with theoretical combinations. These exercises use TI-84 series equipment and a probability simulation application, but the underlying demonstration can be done by recording outcomes manually. View the TI activity on lucky streaks and slumps and view the TI activity on longest streaks.
