Yemen’s internationally recognised government forces say they killed or wounded 1,540 Houthi fighters in the 24 hours before their statement, during 474 military operations. The figure is a claim by a party to the conflict, not an independently confirmed casualty count. The claim was reported on 3 October 2026.

What did Yemen’s army claim?

Army spokesman Colonel Majed Abdullah al-Nazili said government forces carried out 474 operations over the preceding 24 hours and that 1,540 Houthi fighters were killed or wounded. Al Jazeera described the operations as “nearly 500”; Anadolu reported the figure as 474. Both accounts attribute the casualty claim to the army. Al Jazeera and Anadolu

The 1,540 figure combines people the army said were killed or wounded. It should not be read as 1,540 deaths. The spokesman said most of the claimed casualties were on Taiz fronts. The army statement, as reported, listed warplanes, drones, artillery, missiles and rocket launchers among the means used; it did not mention government-force casualties.

Is the 1,540 figure independently verified?

No independent confirmation of the 1,540 total appears in the reports reviewed. Al Jazeera and Anadolu both report the army’s statement, so their coverage confirms how the army presented its claim, not the number of casualties. Other reports describe fighting in Taiz but do not establish this toll.

Reuters reported a separate government military spokesperson’s claim of 20 air strikes in Taiz over three hours. That statement has a different time window and measure; it does not verify the army’s 24-hour casualty figure. Reuters

Where is the fighting concentrated?

The army said most of the casualties it claimed were on Taiz fronts, and separate reports also describe renewed fighting there. Reuters reported the government’s air-strike claim, while the Associated Press reported clashes in residential neighborhoods in eastern Taiz on 1 October. These accounts identify Taiz as a focal area; they do not independently establish battlefield success or the 1,540 casualty count. Associated Press

The wider conflict is unfolding amid a fragile truce established in 2022, according to the reporting. Al Jazeera also reported that the government closed the al-Houban crossing in Taiz, which connects Houthi-held al-Houban with government-held Taiz city. Army media official Ammar al-Sami’i said the closure was for security after an alleged Houthi infiltration attempt, nearby attacks and a broader military buildup.

Al Jazeera reported that the crossing had been closed for nine years and reopened to civilians in 2024 for humanitarian reasons. Those access details and the stated security rationale are attributed to the report and officials; crossing conditions can change quickly.

How does the claim differ from other casualty figures?

Other figures reported during this escalation refer to different periods and sources, and should not be added to or treated as confirmation of the army’s 24-hour claim.

What should readers take from the report?

  • The army claimed 1,540 Houthi fighters were killed or wounded—not that 1,540 were killed.
  • The army also reported 474 operations in the preceding 24 hours.
  • The reported toll is unverified in the cited coverage; accounts of strikes and clashes in Taiz do not independently substantiate it.
  • Taiz is a reported focus of renewed fighting, and the al-Houban crossing’s status may change.
