A seasonal Yellowstone mechanic stopped his truck to avoid a bull bison on the road. The animal ran at the vehicle and struck its left side anyway, denting the hood. The encounter happened near Mud Volcano at about 2:45 a.m. on October 8, 2026, according to Cowboy State Daily. The report says the driver was not reported injured.
What happened near Mud Volcano
Cowboy State Daily reported on October 9, 2026, that a seasonal employee leaving Yellowstone was driving a Chevrolet S-10 with a camper south from Canyon Village toward Fishing Bridge. At about 2:45 a.m. Thursday, October 8, he encountered a bull bison near Mud Volcano and stopped, leaving pavement between the truck and the animal.
Stephen Borgmier, manager of a Yellowstone Park Service Station, told the newspaper that the bison initially appeared calm, then ran toward the truck and hit its left side with its head. The report says the impact left a sizeable dent in the hood; the headlight was undamaged. The bison ran off, and the driver was not reported injured. The encounter was captured by the truck’s dashcam, according to the report; the footage was not independently reviewed in the sources cited here.

What should drivers do when bison are on the road?
Yellowstone’s National Park Service guidance is to wait for bison to move along. Do not honk or drive aggressively toward them. The driver’s decision to stop is consistent with waiting rather than trying to push past the animal, though the NPS has not commented on this specific incident.
The NPS says visitors should stay at least 25 yards from bison and other large animals. If wildlife approaches, move away to maintain that distance. As the agency put it in a June 26, 2026 news release: “Never approach, touch, feed or crowd wildlife, even if an animal appears calm.”
