They are not current San Jose goalie alternatives. The Sharks’ September 28, 2026 opening roster lists Yaroslav Askarov and Alex Nedeljkovic; Mackenzie Blackwood is with Colorado in the NHL’s 2025–26 statistics. Their latest completed-season numbers favor Blackwood, but the goalies faced different teams and workloads, so this is a comparison of separate seasons—not a controlled head-to-head test.
Are Askarov and Blackwood both Sharks goalies?
No. San Jose’s 2026–27 opening roster, announced September 28, 2026, lists Askarov and Nedeljkovic among its goalies. The NHL’s 2025–26 goalie statistics identify Blackwood with Colorado and Askarov with San Jose. Blackwood’s earlier Sharks tenure makes the comparison relevant historically, but he is not a current Sharks option.
How did they compare in 2025–26?
The NHL’s season statistics show Blackwood with the better save percentage and goals-against average, while Askarov appeared in more games. The figures below are for the completed 2025–26 NHL regular season, not live 2026–27 results.

|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mackenzie Blackwood | Colorado | 39 | 23 | .904 | 2.51 |
| Yaroslav Askarov | San Jose | 47 | 21 | .884 | 3.63 |
Save percentage is the share of shots on goal stopped; goals-against average is goals allowed per 60 minutes of play. These measures describe outcomes, not all the circumstances behind them. Wins also depend on team scoring and game results, while GAA and save percentage reflect the shots and situations a goalie faced. The table does not establish that one goalie would have produced the same numbers on the other’s team.

What was Askarov’s role going into 2025–26?
In an August 23, 2025 NHL.com Sharks season preview, Askarov was labeled the projected starter entering training camp. That was a preseason projection for 2025–26, not a current 2026–27 designation. The preview reported that he went 4-6-2 with a 3.10 GAA and .896 save percentage in 13 NHL games, including 12 starts, during 2024–25. In the 2025 AHL Calder Cup Playoffs, he posted a 1.68 GAA and .935 save percentage.
The preview also quoted then-Sharks coach Ryan Warsofsky on the adjustment to a full NHL workload: “It’s a different schedule, the grind of it, which he’ll have to adapt to.” That comment concerned Askarov’s transition at the time, rather than a guarantee about his later role or performance.

What was Blackwood’s Sharks history?
San Jose acquired Blackwood from New Jersey on June 27, 2023, and acquired Askarov from Nashville on August 23, 2024, according to the Sharks’ 2024–25 media guide. The guide records a 44-save Sharks shutout by Blackwood against New Jersey on November 10, 2024, and Askarov’s Sharks debut in St. Louis on November 21, 2024. Those are snapshots of their time with San Jose, not evidence of current form.

How to read the comparison
- For current roster status: Askarov is listed with San Jose; Blackwood is listed with Colorado in the latest completed-season statistics available here.
- For the 2025–26 statistical line: Blackwood had the stronger save percentage and GAA; Askarov played eight more games.
- For a direct judgment of goalie quality: These aggregate statistics alone are not enough. Team context, workload and the circumstances of shots faced matter, and the cited figures do not provide a controlled comparison.
