Gregory Quirk’s 2009 review paired Yamaha’s HTR-6260 A/V receiver with Energy’s RC-Micro 5.1 speaker system. In his two-week, single-room evaluation, the receiver was straightforward to connect and offered useful features for its era, while the tiny speakers were easy to mount but struggled with dialogue clarity, bass impact, and filling a larger room. Those listening results are one reviewer’s experience, not a controlled test; both products are legacy equipment, and current availability, prices, and condition are not established.

What the Yamaha and Energy system includes

The pairing combines a Yamaha HTR-6260 receiver with Energy’s RC-Micro 5.1 package: four compact satellites, a center speaker, and a powered subwoofer. Quirk’s July 15, 2009 review describes using the receiver to connect a cable box, Blu-ray player, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3. That was his source-device setup at the time, rather than a statement about current-device compatibility.

The HTR-6260 is described in the review as a 7.2-channel A/V receiver with four HDMI inputs. The review reports a 90-watt surround-mode specification claim, not an independent power measurement. It also cites Dolby TrueHD, DTS-HD Master Audio, and 17 DSP listening effects. These are historical features; the cited review does not establish support for newer video formats or modern streaming devices.

Energy’s ©2008 specification sheet describes the RC-Micro as an 8-ohm-compatible system and recommends 20–100 watts of continuous amplifier power for its satellites and center. These are manufacturer ratings, not independent measurements. See the 2009 EE Times review and Energy’s RC-Micro 5.1 specification sheet.

How the receiver performed in the review

Setup and features

Quirk said connecting the source devices and switching HDMI inputs was simple. He used Yamaha’s YPAO room setup with its microphone and test signals, and judged the resulting calibration accurate in his installation. His overall description was a receiver that was easy to set up and feature-rich for its period.

Input switching and power behavior

The reviewer encountered occasional lip-sync glitches after switching between input types. He said briefly pausing the Blu-ray player resolved the issue in his setup. He also found the receiver’s power-toggle behavior awkward with a programmed Harmony remote activity. These are dated, individual observations; the review does not establish how often other units exhibit the same behavior.

What the RC-Micro speakers are like

Size and speaker specifications

Energy’s 2008 sheet lists each satellite at 4.7 × 3.5 × 3.5 inches and 1.6 pounds, and the center at 3.5 × 5.9 × 3.5 inches and 1.9 pounds. The satellites and center use a 0.5-inch hyperbolic aluminum-dome tweeter and a 2.5-inch high-excursion aluminum-cone woofer. Energy specifies a 150 Hz–23 kHz frequency response and 88 dB room efficiency for those speakers, alongside 8-ohm compatibility and 20–100 watts continuous recommended amplifier power.

Subwoofer specifications

The included ESW-CS8 is identified by Energy as an 8-inch subwoofer with 240 watts of amplifier power and a 36–180 Hz frequency response. Its listed controls include a variable 40–150 Hz low-pass filter and 0°/180° phase control; connections include RCA line/sub and speaker-level inputs. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent output tests.

Mounting and appearance

The satellites and center have gold-plated push connectors, built-in keyhole slots, and a 1/4-20 threaded insert. Quirk found the light speakers straightforward to mount with a screw and keyhole, and described a gloss-black finish. He also thought the small cubes looked mismatched beside a larger television in his home. Energy’s manual says the threaded insert can work with various aftermarket mounting systems, but compatibility and included hardware should be checked for a specific mount.

Listening impressions: strengths and limitations

During two weeks of listening, Quirk found few noticeable surround effects in movies and said dialogue was often overpowered by other scene audio. Raising the subwoofer level did not produce the rumble he wanted. In the Xbox 360 game Burnout, passing-car effects became more apparent at high volume, but he still felt the subwoofer lacked impact. He described music as somewhat flat, with quiet bass and limited sound carry into an adjoining kitchen.

The contrast is practical: the system’s compact dimensions and easy mounting were advantages, but in the reviewer’s larger living room it did not provide the clarity, bass weight, or coverage he wanted. He thought a smaller apartment or dorm room could be a better fit. This is a subjective assessment from one room and listening setup, not a universal prediction for every room or listener.

How to connect and configure the RC-Micro

Set the receiver crossover

Energy’s owner manual recommends setting the front, rear, and center speakers to “Small,” and the subwoofer setting to “on” or “use.” It suggests a receiver crossover between 120 and 180 Hz when available, and says 120 Hz is appropriate for this system in most rooms. The manual’s wording is: “When using the RC-Micro System, the appropriate crossover frequency should be 120Hz in most rooms.” Adjust for room acoustics and preference rather than treating the recommendation as a guarantee of a particular sound. See Energy’s RC-Micro owner manual.

Connect the subwoofer

  • If the receiver has a subwoofer or preamp output, connect it to the subwoofer’s LFE/left input with a standard male-to-male RCA cable, as shown in Energy’s manual.
  • If the receiver lacks an RCA subwoofer output, the manual documents using the subwoofer’s speaker-level inputs.
  • Match positive and negative speaker-wire polarity. Energy warns that reversed polarity can cause a severe lack of bass.

The manual also explains adjusting subwoofer level, low-pass filter, and phase to blend the subwoofer with the satellites and center.

What to check before buying used legacy equipment

The cited sources establish historical specifications and setup guidance, not present-day stock, pricing, or the condition of any used receiver or speaker set. Before considering a listing, verify the exact model, what components and accessories are included, and whether each unit functions properly. Check the receiver’s specifications for impedance support, channel configuration, and the outputs needed for your setup; confirm that its video and audio connections meet your requirements. For the speakers, confirm that the satellites, center, subwoofer, cables, and any mounting hardware you need are present and in suitable condition. An 8-ohm rating and a published feature list do not establish the health or compatibility of an individual used unit.
