The Yale Real Living touchscreen deadbolt is best suited to households that want keypad entry and programmable codes, and are comfortable maintaining batteries and planning for a lockout without a mechanical key. Before buying or installing one, confirm the exact model, door dimensions and Z-Wave module generation: the older Real Living locks are not interchangeable with newer Yale Assure accessories.

What the YRD220 and YRD240 offer

Yale’s documentation covers the YRD220 Touchscreen Deadbolt and the YRD240 key-free touchscreen variant. Both offer touchscreen code entry; the practical appeal is letting household members use programmable codes instead of carrying a key. The YRD240’s key-free design makes Yale’s warning about the lack of a mechanical override especially important: do not assume a physical key can open the lock.

These are older Real Living products, not simply another name for the newer Assure line. Yale’s Real Living support materials provide model-specific manuals; confirm the model number printed on the lock or inside its battery cover before sourcing parts or a network module.

Will it fit your door?

Yale’s current touchscreen installation guidance specifies the following door preparation dimensions. Measure the door and existing bore holes before ordering or starting installation.

#1 Best Overall
Yale Assure Deadbolt Lock with Touchscreen, Satin Nickel Digital Non-Connected Entry Door Lock with Electronic Keypad and Back-Up Key, ‎‎YRD226NR619
  • Lose your keys, for good: Unlock your door using your entry code on the keypad, and leave the bulky keychain behind. For use with your smartphone or smart home system, Yale Access Upgrade Kit is required (sold separately).
  • Auto-Lock for peace of mind: You didn’t forget to lock the door, your lock did it for you. Rest easy knowing that your door is locked every time you leave the house and when you go to bed at night.
  • Easy to install on any door: Not so handy, Not a problem. Yale Assure locks are super easy to install and are guaranteed to fit standard doors (doors 1-¾” to 2-¼” thick. Doors under 1-⅜” require thin door kit).
  • Stop hiding keys: Sharing codes is the new hide-a-key. Give unique codes to friends, family, and other people you trust, and never put a key under the doormat again.
  • Upgrade to Wi-Fi with Yale Access: Use just the keypad for now, and upgrade to a smart lock whenever you’re ready. Our Yale Access Upgrade Kit (sold separately) lets you use your phone as your key.
Fit measurement Yale-specified value
Door thickness 1 3/4 or 2 1/4 inches
Cross bore 2 1/8 inches
Edge bore 1 inch
Backset 2 3/8 or 2 3/4 inches

These are the dimensions listed by Yale Home Support; a door outside them may require different preparation or may not be compatible. The YRD240 instructions also call for installing with the bolt retracted and testing mechanical operation before inserting batteries. Follow the manual for the exact model rather than assuming the two variants have identical installation steps.

How battery power and emergency entry work

The Real Living guide specifies four AA alkaline batteries and describes low-battery warnings plus a 9-volt battery jumper for emergency power. Yale does not establish a battery-life figure in the cited documentation, so battery replacement intervals should not be inferred from a generic estimate.

The jumper is a contingency, not a mechanical key override. Yale explicitly warns: “While Yale has included several features to prevent lockout (9-Volt battery jumper, low battery warnings), it is still possible for a lockout situation to arise.” The guide also says: “Because this product does not have a mechanical override, Yale recommends to use this product in an environment where there are additional entry points into the dwelling.” Plan for a usable alternate entrance and keep the emergency-power method accessible.

Does it work with Z-Wave?

Yes, Yale states that Z-Wave 300-series modules work with the YRD210, YRD220 and YRD240. Module generation matters: Yale says Z-Wave Plus 500 modules are for newer Assure products and are not interchangeable with the older Real Living locks. Check both the lock model and module designation before purchase; a module that fits a newer Yale lock is not automatically suitable here.

  • Lock and unlock your door from anywhere by adding the lock to a compatible Z-Wave smart home or alarm system and app (i.e. Samsung SmartThings, Ring Alarm, Wink, etc.). Requires compatible hub sold separately and app - no Yale app is used for this lock
  • Replaces your existing deadbolt in minutes on standard doors, 1-3/4" to 2-1/4" thick with just a screwdriver. No additional holes needed. Mounting hardware and batteries included
  • Comes with two physical keys for added peace of mind

Yale’s Access upgrade compatibility list names Assure models including YRD216, YRD226, YRD246 and YRD446, but does not list YRD220 or YRD240. That list does not establish Yale Access support for a Real Living lock. Verify the exact hardware and firmware with Yale before relying on app-based access or buying an upgrade kit. See Yale’s smart-lock support information for compatibility guidance.

Who should consider this lock?

  • A reasonable fit: You want keypad entry and programmable user codes, your door matches the specified measurements, and you can maintain the batteries and prepare an alternate way into the home.
  • Think carefully: You need a mechanical-key fallback, cannot reliably monitor battery warnings, or expect compatibility with a newer Assure Z-Wave Plus module or Yale Access kit without confirming support for your exact Real Living hardware.

This is a documentation-based assessment, not a hands-on test. The cited material does not establish touchscreen responsiveness, long-term reliability, measured battery life or current retail value; those qualities should not be treated as verified review findings.
