Editor’s note: The title “Y2Mate 2025: The Best Tool to Download YouTube Videos Free” is no longer factually accurate. The original Y2Mate.com was permanently shut down on October 14, 2025, following enforcement action announced by the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI). Several unrelated websites still use the Y2Mate name, but they do not provide one consistent service and none is officially affiliated with YouTube or Google.
This guide explains what remains available, how the current domains differ, what can make a conversion fail, and the safety and copyright issues to consider before downloading anything.
What happened to Y2Mate.com?
The original Y2Mate.com is no longer the Y2Mate service many older tutorials describe. According to IFPI, the operator agreed to permanently close Y2Mate.com and 11 related stream-ripping websites. The shutdown took effect on October 14, 2025.

WHOIS information available as of August 7, 2026 lists the domain with client hold and client transfer prohibited statuses. That means readers should not treat search results, archived tutorials, or similarly named sites as evidence that the original service has returned.

The name has since been reused by several unrelated domains. There is no verified basis for treating y2mate.ltd, y2mate.gs, y2mate.nu, y2mate.is, and other look-alike addresses as a single company or product. In fact, Y2Mate.ltd explicitly says it is independent from Y2Mate.com and from other Y2Mate-branded domains.
Which Y2Mate sites currently offer a downloader?
Two current sites have documented browser-based workflows, but their capabilities and policies are different. The differences matter: a quality limit, file-length limit, or download quota listed by one site must not be presented as a universal Y2Mate feature.

How the documented browser workflows work
Neither Y2Mate.ltd nor Y2Mate.gs documents a command-line tool or special command syntax. The interaction is browser-based: paste the video URL, select a format or quality, choose Convert, and use the resulting download control.
Y2Mate.ltd
- Open the Y2Mate.ltd page.
- Paste the YouTube address into the field labeled “Paste the YouTube video link here…”
- Select Convert.
- Review the MP4 quality options that actually appear. Do not assume 1080p is available.
- Click the download button associated with the conversion result, not a similarly styled advertising button.
The site says that an account, YouTube login, Google login, app, and browser extension are not required. Its FAQ says the available quality depends on the original video. A 1080p option cannot be produced from a source that was uploaded only at 360p.

- Open
y2mate.gs. They2mate.nuaddress currently redirects there. - Paste a supported YouTube URL into the field showing the example

- Select Convert.
- When processing finishes, use the resulting Download button.
The FAQ lists these supported URL patterns:

For MP3, the site documents 192 kbps output and a 150-minute maximum. For MP4, it documents 360p output and a 30-minute maximum. These specifications apply to Y2Mate.gs as documented, not to every website using the Y2Mate name.
Why a Y2Mate conversion may fail
A failed conversion does not necessarily mean the URL was copied incorrectly. Y2Mate.gs identifies several conditions that can prevent processing:
- Private videos: A third-party browser tool cannot normally access a private video without authorized access.
- Age-restricted videos: The converter may be unable to process content requiring age verification.
- Region-restricted videos: Availability in your browser or country can affect conversion.
- Live videos: Y2Mate.gs says a live stream must finish before it can be converted.
- Long videos: Y2Mate.gs lists 150 minutes for MP3 and 30 minutes for MP4. Its FAQ mentions a Try again option, but a retry is not a guaranteed way around the limit.
- Invalid URLs: Extra text, a malformed address, or an unsupported link can cause an error.
- Daily limits: Y2Mate.gs may require users who reach its daily limit to wait 24 hours.
Y2Mate.ltd publishes different guidance: it says there is no strict maximum video length and recommends videos under two hours. That is a claim from a separate site and should not be used to explain Y2Mate.gs behavior.

A browser-based workflow is not automatically safe. The current sites disclose third-party advertising, links, or other content. Y2Mate.ltd’s privacy policy says advertisements may come from third-party ad networks whose cookies and data practices are governed by those networks. Y2Mate.gs’s terms similarly disclaim responsibility for third-party content and links and disclaim warranties relating to viruses or other harmful components.

Use these precautions:
- Check the address bar. Look carefully for misspellings, unexpected redirects, and a different domain from the one you intended to visit.
- Ignore pop-up download prompts. Y2Mate.ltd specifically warns that a pop-up button labeled “Download Now” may be an advertisement rather than the actual download control.
- Do not install extra software. The documented workflows do not require an APK, browser extension, desktop program, codec, or download manager.
- Never provide a YouTube or Google password. The current browser workflows state that a login is not required.
- Cancel unexpected downloads. If the page downloads an installer, executable, extension, or unrelated file instead of the expected media file, delete it without opening it.
- Keep browser protections enabled. Use an updated browser, enable safe-browsing warnings, and scan unexpected files before opening them.
Also remember that the expected file type is not a complete safety test. A media file can be legitimate while an advertisement, redirect, or fake download button on the same page is unsafe.
Copyright and YouTube’s rules
Whether a download is technically possible is separate from whether it is permitted. YouTube’s Terms of Service prohibit downloading, reproducing, or otherwise using content except when YouTube specifically permits it, YouTube and the applicable rights holder give permission, or applicable law permits it.
YouTube’s copyright guidance identifies permission, public-domain material, Creative Commons licensing, and applicable copyright exceptions as relevant considerations. A video being publicly viewable does not automatically make it free to copy or redistribute.

Y2Mate.ltd’s terms say users must not convert copyrighted content without the copyright owner’s permission and limit converted audio to personal use. Y2Mate.gs’s terms limit use to personal, noncommercial purposes and place responsibility on users to have the necessary rights or permissions.

The practical rule is simple: use a third-party downloader only for content you are authorized to download, such as your own videos, a creator’s explicitly downloadable material, or content covered by a valid permission or legal exception. Do not reupload, sell, distribute, or publicly share downloaded material merely because a converter produced a file.

What should you use instead?
For offline viewing, the safest option is YouTube’s own download feature where it is available, such as downloads provided through an eligible YouTube Premium account or an official creator-provided download. For your own uploads, download the original files from YouTube Studio or retain the source files before publishing.
These options are less likely to expose you to misleading advertisements and are aligned with YouTube’s own delivery and account controls. They may not provide a standalone MP4 file for every video, but that limitation is preferable to assuming that an unrelated converter is authorized or risk-free.
